SWAMP FIGHT, EYE FOR AN EYE AND MORE: COMPLETE WWE EXTREME RULES PPV COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-07-19 21:35:00

Welcome to PWInsider.com's live, ongoing coverage of Extreme Rules: The Horror Show!

Tonight's coverage is brought to you by our good friends at www.RingsideCollectibles, who are running their Christmas in July sale right now!!

KICKOFF SHOW

Scott Stanford and Peter Rosenberg, in WWE HQ, are your hosts.  Stanford said that tonight is going to be especially horrific.  Hopefully he doesn't mean the in-ring action!  Someone is going to leave without some vision, we are told.  Hopefully they don't mean the creative team!

They ran down the lineup for the PPV.

They aired a video feature on The Swamp Fight.

Renee Young, JBL and Booker T, via Zoom, discussed The Swamp Fight.  This would be Young's first appearance since announcing she was stricken with COVID-19.  Booker picked Bray.  JBL said Braun would win.

The New Day cut a promo.  They have been working at becoming "one" with Tables and brought in D-Von Dudley as their mentor who has been teaching them the way of the Table.  Dudley was in full Dudley regalia.  They said he was the brains of the Dudleys and broke 10 million tables.  They asked him the secret of success for the Table Match.  He said it was simple - put your opponents through a table.  It was a nice cameo for D-Von, who works as a Producer.

They aired a video feature on Sasha Banks and Bayley.

Charly Caruso interviewed MVP and Bobby Lashley.  Even if Apollo Crews is 100%, he has to deal with MVP, the greatest United States Champion.  He spent a mint having the new U.S. title made.  All he wanted to do was mentor him, but Crews didn't want to have it.  After he's done with Crews, he and Lashley will be going to an after-party while Crews ponders his lack of wisdom.  It's not smart to disrespect them.  Good promo.

They aired a video feature on the Eye for an Eye match between Rey Mysterio and Seth Rollins.

Kevin Owens vs. Murphy

Murphy tried to jump Owens but he avoided the charge and nailed a series of right hands in the corner.  Murphy nailed him but was caught with a series of chops.  Owens went for the Stunner several times but Murphy avoided it.  Murphy nailed a knee strike for a two count.  They battled back and forth.  Murphy caught him with a standing chinlock.  Owens tried to fight his way out and finally did by driving him backwards into the buckles.

Murphy came off the ropes but was kicked and caught with a DDT.  Owens nailed him with a lariat that turned Murphy inside out.  Owens went for a senton back splash but Murphy pulled his knees up.  Owens nailed him and sent Murphy into the corner.  He nailed a big cannonball into the corner for a two count.   Owens went for a superplex but Murphy battled him off and nailed a flying double knee strike.

Murphy went for a German suplex but Owens nailed several big elbows.  Murphy overpowered him and nailed a big brainbuster for a two count.  Murphy began stomping Owens in the corner.  Owens tried to fight back but was overwhelmed. Owens was placed on the top rope and again, Murphy went for a superplex.  Owens fired back with body shots.  Murphy nailed a kick to the head.  Owens fought him off and sent Murphy crashing to the mat.  Owens nailed a swanton but Murphy kicked up at two.

Murphy went for the top but missed.  He rolled through but ate a superkick and a stunner for the pin,

Your winner, Kevin Owens!

A perfectly fine, well worked opening match.

Renee Young, Booker T and JBL returned to discuss Asuka vs. Sasha Banks tonight.  Booker said Sasha is an extraordinary talent and her tandem with Bayley is a lethal combination.  Booker and JBL both predict Asuka will be victorious tonight.

They plugged Randy Orton vs. Big Show on Raw tomorrow.

They air a video feature on Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler tonight.

EXTREME RULES 2020

TABLES MATCH: WWE Smackdown Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura

Nakamura and Cesaro take out Big E and double-teamed Kofi Kingston.  They set up a table in the ring and placed Kingston on the top rope.  Big E made the sae and teased powerbombing Nakamura through a table.  Cesaro and Kofi battled.  Cesaro military pressed him but Kofi escaped.  Big E speared Cesaro through the ropes to the floor.

Kingston knocked Nakamura off the apron and headed to the floor as well.  New Day set up a table on the entrance ramp and placed Cesaro atop of it.  Big E elevated Kofi into a dive to the floor but Cesaro and Nakamura smashed the table into him. Big E was taken out.  The challengers attempted to double suplex Kofi through a table on the floor but Big E pulled him back into the ring.  Nakamura and Cesaro worked over Big E.  He fought them off and teased spearing them both but was kicked in stereo.

Big E suplexed Cesaro but Nakamura caught him with a sliding knee strike.  Koki wiped out Nakamura with a big trust fall dive.  That looked great.  Big E stomped away at Cesaro as Kofi worked over Nakamure.  New Day set up two tables stacked atop of each other, a spot created by The Public Enemy on 8/28/94 in Philadelphia.  I believe it was Don E. Allen who was the unfortunate victim that night.  They tried to superplex Cesaro off the ropes through the tables but he fought his way out.  Cesaro avoided the Big Ending and swung Big E into a Nakamura kick.  Kofi knocked Nakamura to the floor but Shinsuke knocked over the table to protect himself.

Kofi worked over Cesaro and placed him on the top rope.  Cesaro overpowered him and nailed a powerbomb off the top through the stacked tables.

Your winners and new WWE Smackdown Tag Team Champions, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura!

A physical, hard fought brawl with a hell of a spot at the end.  A nice way to officially kick off the PPV.  This should add some additional credibility to Cesaro and Nakamura and give the New Day something to chase.

Cesaro said they were tired of being overlooked and actions speak louder than words.

Backstage, Alexa Bliss was leaping an affirmation with Asuka, Kairi Sane and Nikki Cross, promising that Cross can beat Bayley tonight.
