TITLE CHANGES, THE STRANGEST ROH TITLE MATCH IN THE HISTORY OF THE COMPANY AND MORE: COMPLETE RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE 2019 COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2019-12-13 19:00:00

Alex Shelley vs. Colt Cabana

They did some mat wrestling early mixed with comedy spots where they escaped a hold but they each kept going like they were still in it.  The crowd liked it.  The counters on the mat were all very good.  Shelley used a nervehold to maneuver him into a bow and arrow style hold, but  Cabana reversed it and turned Shelley into a body scissor.  Shelley tried to escape but Cabana controlled him.  This was a nice change of pace after two brawling-centric bouts.

Shelley turned it into a pendulum but Cabana escaped.  They went back and forth with pinfall attempts before facing off.  Lots more back and forth reversals and counters until Shelley finally trapped him on the mat and scored the pin.

Your winner, Alex Shelley!

A solid match.  The finish was surprising in that it came out of nowhere with very little dramatic build but the work from bell to bell was enjoyable.

They aired a video feature on Maria Manic vs. Angelina Love.

Maria Manic vs. Angelina Love.

Manic hit the ring and clotheslined Love, then throw her around the ring.  She choked Love in the corner. Mandy Leon got on the top to interfere but was slammed off the top.  Manic hit running clotheslines on each.  She nailed a running kick to Love’s head.  She walked around the ring celebrating, then returned to the ring for a big sit-down powerbomb.  The crowd called for another.

Manic played to the crowd on the ropes.  Leon tried to hit the ring with her bottle of hairspray but it was kicked out of her hands.  Manic hits an overhead slam on Love.  Leon retreated to the floor.  Manic slammed her head into the buckle.

Manic went to powerbomb Love outside on the apron but Leon grabbed her leg.  Manic grabbed her and slammed Leon on the floor.  Manic pressed and dropped Love onto the ring announcers’ table.  Caprice Coleman said Manic was beauty and the beast at the same time.  The crowd chanted, “This is awesome.”

Manic wandered around, then tossed Love into the ring.  She picked her up for the Torture Rack.  Love submitted.

Your winner, Maria Manic!

This was booked exactly as it needed to be to make Manic out to be, well, sort of the Ultimate Warrior type monster mixed in with some really strong swagger.  Purists will find something to pick apart about all this, but it told a story, it got over and Manic made you want to see what she was going to do next.  That’s pro wrestling theater 101.

ROH TV Champion Shane Taylor vs. Dragon Lee

Dragon Lee offered his hand but Shane spit at it.  Lee attacked but was caught and slammed down, drilled with a series of rights on the mat.  Lee caught Taylor with a dropkick as he was rebounding off the ropes.  Taylor was sent to the floor.  Lee went for a dive but Taylor caught him by the throat and smashed him down onto the apron.  Taylor continued working over Lee with strikes on the floor and sat him in a chair against the barricade.  Taylor worked him over with punches and forearms, then nailed a big running knee.

Taylor controlled the mood, dropping a big legdrop for a two count on Lee.  He began verbally mocking Lee, calling him a New Japan Superstar.  He said this was ROH and he runs ROH.  He drilled Lee with a knee in the corner.  He began nailing open-handed chops, crumbling Lee with each strike.

Lee made a comeback with a leaping dropkick into the corner.  Lee went for a kick but it was blocked and Taylor nailed a big clothesline.  Lee went for a suplex but it was blocked.  Lee nailed a big knee strike that rocked the champ.  The second took him down.  The third knocked him out of the ring.  Lee went to the top and came off with a flying double stomp on the apron.

Lee drilled Taylor and dared him to hit back.   Taylor did and they had a flurry, with Taylor using his power to win it.  Taylor wiped out Lee with a big clothesline and nailed the Michinoku Driver but Lee kicked up at the last second.  Taylor was shocked and they treated it as if no one had ever kicked out of the move.  Lee nailed a German suplex but was kicked in the face.  Taylor went to the ropes but Lee  kicked him in the back of the legs, catching him on the ropes

Lee kicked him with an enziguiri, the nailed a double stomp off the ropes for a two count.  Taylor drilled him and went to use a chain.  Lee caught him with a Canadian Destroyer.  Lee grabbed the chai and tied it around his knee.  He drilled Taylor with it and covered him but Lee kicked up at the one count.  Lee nailed a suplex into a slam for another two count.

One of Taylor’s seconds got on the apron but was kicked off.  Lee pulled down his kneepad, exposed his knee, nailed a shining wizard and scored the pin.

Your winner and new ROH TV Champion, Dragon Lee!

A really damn good match with Lee fighting hard to overcome Taylor's strikes and might.  Really good, hard-hitting bout with a nice story told.
