COMPLETE ROH SUMMER SUPERCARD COVERAGE

By Stuart Carapola on 2019-08-09 22:53:00

We see a great video package hyping the upcoming debut of ROH's newest signing, Joe Gendry (Great pickup, by the way), then we head back to the ring for our next match...

Caristico, Soberano Jr & Stuka Jr vs Barbaro Cavernario, Hechicero & Templaro

Hechicero and Stuka start us off with some chain wrestling, then they go to the mat before winding up at a stalemate.  I apologize at this point because everyone wound up doing the "take turns doing spots" part and I don't know who any of these guys are, but if you've ever seen a lucha match, you know what this looks like.  Then they do the "everyone get in line to dive to the floor" part.  Then they head back into the ring for a series of double team spots.  Then they do triple team spots.  Then we do more dives.  Then we do finisher spots.  Then someone tries a submission hold and miraculously, wrestling wins the wrestling match.

Winners: Caristico. Soberano Jr & Stuka Jr

If you've seen one lucha six man, you've seen them all.

ROH Title Match: Matt Taven vs Alex Shelley

Feeling out process to start as they trade wristlocks, and Shelley's superior mat skills come into play as he maneuvers Taven down to the mat.  Taven gets free with a headscissors, but Shelley gets free and blows his nose at Taven.  Taven responds with a slap to the face, then more mat wrestling that Shelley handily wins with a series of pinning combinations.  Shelley is completely outclassing Taven here, and blocks two attempts at the Climax, reversing the second one to a Border City Stretch attempt.  Taven makes it to the ropes and starts using his lucha skills, but Shelley stops that with an eye poke.  Shelley dropkicks Taven's knee out from under him on a back and forth, so Taven slides out to the floor and drags Shelley out after him, slamming his face on the apron.  Shelley reverses a whip and connects with a flying knee to Taven's back, then steals a shoe from a fan who is literally sleeping in the front row.  Shelley goes for Sliced Bread #2, but Taven blocks and drops Shelley through a table, and just like that the momentum changes completely.  Shelley beats the count, and Taven covers for 2.  Taven with a spinning uranage backbreaker for another 2, then chokes Shelley on the bottom rope.  Taven is swooping in on the back like a shark, getting Shelley in a modified surfboard and dropping knees on his back.  Taven gets a high angle Boston crab, Shelley makes the ropes, Taven drags him back out, Shelley gets free, and Taven hits a Russian legsweep and a neckbreaker for 2.  Taven goes to the apron to try and suplex Shelley to the floor, but Shelley counters to a tornado DDT to the floor.  DAMN!  Taven empties a bottle of water in Shelley's face, and Shelley thanks him by ramming him into the barricade, then hits a standing Sliced Bread #2 over the barricade, essentially giving Taven a backbreaker over the barricade.  Jesus.  Taven with a leaping enziguiri to the face and charges across ringside to hit a crossbody over the barricade.  Taven goes for a frogsplash, Shelley counters to a small package for 2, Shelley hits a spinning flatliner and gets another 2, then sets up for a superkick.  Shelley connects, Taven gives him the finger, Shelley hits another superkick followed by Sliced Bread #2, Taven kicks out at 2, and Shelley gets Taven in the Border City Stretch.  Shelley counters to a cradle for 2, Shelley gets a side cradle for 2, Taven hits the Climax and covers, shelley reverses to a crucifix for 2, Taven hits another Climax, and that's finally enough to get the win.

Winner: Matt Taven

That match was AMAZING, and exactly what Taven needed after the Cobb match.  Taven cuts a promo after the match mocking Toronto, then says we just saw another name added to the list of people who have had to bow down to the king.  He's beaten them all, including PCO, Jeff Cobb, and now he's on pace to be the greatest ROH World Champion of all time.  Here comes Rush, and Taven holds up the belt in his face before taking a walk as Rush gives him the "I'm coming for you" stare.

And with that...IT'S MAIN EVENT TIME!

Ladder War/ROH Tag Team Title Match: Jay & Mark Briscoe vs Guerrillas of Destiny

The eighth ladder war in ROH history since the Briscoes won the first in 2007 begins with both teams swinging chairs at each other before Mark takes Tama Tonga out with a dive while Jay and Tonga Loa trade shots in the ring.  Jay dumps Loa to the floor and takes him out with a dive before helping Mark do some damage to Tama.  Miscommunication leads to Mark accidentally taking Jay out with a chair, then they double clothesline Mark before working both Briscoes over with chairs.  Loa connects with a NASTY wild swing to the back of Jay's head, then Mark German suplexes Tama on the floor.  Jay gets slammed on the timekeeper's table as Mark hammers Loa in the ring with a chair.  Mark puts a ladder between the ring and barricade, sticks Loa on top of it, and jumps on Loa to send both to the floor hard.  The insane brawl continues around ringside, with Tama giving Mark a DDT through a table, then backdropping him onto a chair set up at ringside.  This is just nuts.  Tama rams Jay's skull into a chair wedged in the corner, and Jay is busted open BAD.  Ian suggests it's time to put the kids to sleep as Loa chokes a bloody Jay on the bottom rope as Tama sets up a couple tables at ringside.  Mark gives Loa a blockbuster through the table, and Tama goes face-to-face with Jay in the ring to trade punches with some rather untoward language thrown in for good measure.  They go back to swinging chairs, Tama German suplexes Jay into next week, and Jay rips his head off with a clothesline.  This is brutal.  Jay gives Tama a Jay Driller off the apron through another table at ringside, then Loa lays Mark out as Jay drags himself back into the ring.  Jay has another huge laceration on his back from the table as Loa powerbombs him into the corner, but then Mark comes off the top with a chairshot to Loa's skull.  Mark sets up the obligatory huge ladder in the entranceway above a table he rolls Tama onto.  Mark climbs the ladder and comes off with a nasty splash that looks like it hit both men real hard legit.  Mark sets a ladder up in the ring and starts to climb, Tama runs up another ladder at ringside and runs up it to give Mark a leaping DDT off the ladder.  Tama climbs the ladder, Jay climbs up with him, and they trade shots, Tama falls, climbs right back up, they trade more punches and headbutts, and Tama tumbles to the mat while Jay reaches up to grab the belts for the win.

Winners: Jay & Mark Briscoe

This was just an unbelievable war, both teams left it all out there to make what was closer to a real streetfight than nearly anything I've ever seen in wrestling.  Excellent match to end a terrific show.
