WHAT HAPPENED AFTER WRESTLEMANIA WENT OFF THE AIR: MIKE JOHNSON'S LIVE WRESTLEMANIA 34 BLOG FROM INSIDE THE MERCEDES-BENZ SUPERDOME

By Mike Johnson on 2018-04-09 11:57:00

Time for Nia Jax challenging Alexa Bliss.  My boy Terrelder sent me a text saying Nia got her new gear from Leilani Kai and Judy Martin.   She attacked and destroyed Mickie James on the outside, leaving Alexa Bliss all alone.  Bliss screamed and tried to run from Nia but got wiped out.  That was awesome.  Jax pressed and tossed her down.  Bliss tried to escape but was caught and run over by Jax on the floor.

Bliss poked Jax in the eye, allowing Bliss the chance to gain control.  She worked over Jax's leg.  She nailed Twisted Bliss to the floor.  She kept trying to score the pin but Jax kept kicking up.  Bliss had the best sneering expressions ever as she slapped Jax.  She told Jax that she was nothing without her, which sparked something in Jax, who made a comeback and began tossing her around the ring.

Bliss went back to the eye.  Jax reversed the momentum and nailed an Alabama Slam.   Jax nailed a Samoan Drop off the ropes and scored the pin, capturing the title.  Really solid back and forth match with some great story and character stuff.  Enjoyable.

Jax embraced the Rock's mom and daughter after.  Bliss was crying in the ring.  Jax was crying as she headed to the back.  A cool moment to be sure.

It is time for the first-ever Wrestle Kingdom match that was rematched on a Wrestlemania, WWE champion AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura.  MASSIVELY cool entrance for Nakamura with an army of violinists and Alice Cooper's guitarists.  They pretty much blew up the Dome with pyro for Styles.  This feels like another big match fight based on how the crowd reacted.

Lots of good wrestling here, not that you needed to be told that.  They look to be building to a long match.  The energy in the crowd has dipped since the entrances.  I hope that's not a sign that we've been here too long, although I suspect I will soon have squatter's rights in this venue!

They started picking up the pace with Nakamura catching Styles during a Phenomenal Forearm and catching him with a landslide for a two count.   Nakamura went for a move off the ropes but Styles slipped down and went for a powerbomb.  He focused on the back of Nakamura's knee to set up the calf crusher and finally cinched it in, but Nakamura tried to make it to the ropes.  Styles stopped him in the center of the ring but Nakamura reversed it and cinched in a triangle choke.

The fans began dueling chants for each man, back and forth.    Styles persevered, pulling Nakamura up and slamming him down.  The crowd was clapping back and forth for them to rally the competitors.  Styles went for the Styles Clash but Nakamura slipped out and nailed an enziguiri, hurting his bad leg by executing the move.

Styles nailed the Phenomenal Forearm, scoring a close two count.  Styles followed up with a springboard 450 splash, but Nakamura pulled up his knees, scoring a two count.  They battered each other back and forth with forearms.  Nakamura drilled him with a big knee to the back of the head for a close near fall.

Styles was drilled with a series of knees to the body, the challenger battering him.  Nakamura went for the Kinshasa, but Styles ducked, reversed him into the Styles Clash and scored the pin.

Your winner and still WWE champion AJ Styles.

This was a good, solid match, but not the classic we saw in New Japan years ago or even on the level of some of the other top bouts tonight, but there was nothing wrong with it.  It was just good.

They embraced after the match.  The crowd responded to that.  Nakamura got down on his knee and presented Styles with the WWE championship belt.  Styles held the belt aloft.  Nakamura drilled him in the nuts with a low blow.  He began battering Styles with kicks and stomped him over and over.

Styles was knocked to the floor.  Nakamura charged and drilled Styles with a kick to the head.   Great turn.  They obviously needed to go in a new direction with him.  I'm interesting in seeing where it goes.
