CM PUNK TO UNDERGO SURGERY, UFC DEBUT DELAYED

By Mike Johnson on 2016-02-10 11:43:00

Former WWE champion CM Punk's debut fight in the Octagon against Mickey Gall will have to be delayed as Punk is undergoing back surgery for a herniated disc.

In an interview with www.MMAFighting.com, Punk revealed that he had been training with the herniated disc the entire span of his UFC training and that his back had been hurting stemming from his time as a professional wrestler.

"My back has always bugged me," he told Ariel Helwani. "Figured it was just wrestling sh**. Turns out it was."

Punk stated his back had gotten bad enough that he was unable to train at times and that he had undergone different techniques to get healthy before surgery was decided.

Punk learned about the surgery right before he and Mickey Gall had a face to face inside the Octagon to promote Punk's debut fight this past Saturday at a UFC Fight Night event.

The surgery and recovery will take 4-6 weeks, according to www.MMAFighting.com's report. That would put the planned UFC 199 debut out the window but still leave a window open for Punk to compete in the MMA world for the first time before the end of 2016.

Punk signed with UFC in December 2014. He left WWE in January 2014 with his final match being that year's Royal Rumble. He and WWE medical doctor Chris Amann are still embroiled in a lawsuit stemming from remarks Punk made about his medical treatment while under contract to WWE.
