WWE NXT'S SAMI ZAYN CONFRONTS ETHAN PAGE AND MORE: COMPLETE EVOLVE 50 COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2015-10-18 22:47:00

Welcome to PWInsider.com's live, ongoing coverage of EVOLVE 50 from the NYWC Sportatorium in Deer Park, Long Island.

Ace Romero & Mike Orlando & JGeorge vs. Rudeboy Riley & Sonny Kiss & Alex Mason

Riley and JGeorge started out with Riley taking him down with armdrags and shoulderblocks.   Romero and  Mason went back and forth until Kiss and Orlando tagged in.  Kiss used his mannerisms and a spinning head scissors to take Orlando down.  Riley tagged in but was snapped onto the buckles by Orlando.  Orlando followed up with a lungblower.    Romero nailed Riley with a splash for a two count.

Orlando returned to the ring and continued working over Riley.  Riley fought back with a flying knee off the ropes.  He went to make a tag but his partners were pulled off the apron.  Riley ducked an enziguiri and nailed an Angle Slam.  Kiss tagged in and nailed all sorts of great spots including a handspring elbow.  Orlando attacked him from behind but Alex Mason joined the fray for the pin.   Orlando nailed a fireman's carry into a lariat on Mason.

Orlando went to the top but missed a moonsault off the top to the floor.  Kiss nailed a Hollywood Star Press and scored the pin.

Your winners, Rudeboy Riley & Sonny Kiss & Alex Mason!

Decent six man tag previewing next week's FIP event.  Kiss is a star as far as I am concerned and Riley has a really good, charismatic old school sort of presence.  I expect they will make a splash over the next year.

Tracy Williams vs. TJ Perkins

Some really nice back and forth wrestling early.  Williams shoulderblocked Perkins down but was caught in a leglock and turned over into a single-legged crab.  Perkins twisted it around into a STF variation.   Williams tried to grapple out.  Williams turned it into a surfboard, trying to ground Perkins into a submission.

Perkins was able to evade it and score several two counts, using his knee to force Williams.  Williams forces himself to his feet but a headscissors takedown brings him down to the mat.  They go back and forth trying different submissions and reversals.  Perkins used the stump puller on Williams.  He began focusing on Williams' shoulder and worked it over, trying to wear him down.

Williams fights his way out and is caught in an Octopus, which Perkins then turns into an armbar submission.  Williams finally has had enough and muscles over Perkins with a big suplex.  He kills Perkins with a lariat followed by an over the knee backbreaker.  Williams continues to control Perkins on the mat, scoring several two counts.  Perkins nailed a series of knees to try and soften up Williams for an escape but is unable to do so.  Williams continues to control Perkins on the mat with a headscissors around the neck.

Perkins finally uses a head stand to escape but before he can garner any monentum, is caught in a front facelock.    Perkins returns with a superkick and nailed a tornado DDT combination.  With both men down, the referee began counting them out.  They returned to their feet with Perkins nailing several uppercuts.  William returned fire.  Perkins went for a rolling armbreaker and turned Williams into a near pinfall situation.

Perkins went for a hammerlock but was grabbed and spiked for a two count.  Perkins went for the Three Amigos and nailed two suplexes, only to be caught and ground down to the mat with a side headock.  Perkins made his way to the ropes to force a break.   Williams went for a piledriver but Perkins slipped out and used a La Magistral cradle for a two count.  Perkins went back to the Three Amigos but changed his strategy, nailing a belly to belly suplex, slamming Willams back on the bad arm.

Perkins went to the top but was cut off.  Williams went for the superplex but his arm was nailed and shoved off.  Perkins went for a slingshot spear but was caught.  They battled over a backslide.  Perkins flipped up and over and snapped Williams down into a cross armbreaker.  Williams escaped and floated over, using a neck crank to trap his opponent.  With nowhere to go, Perkins tapped.

You winner, Tracy Williams!

If you like mat wrestling, this was a good match for you.  Lots of really well worked stuff here with matwork, submissions and each selling the right way to make the moves mean the most possible.  This was a great introductory match if you weren't familiar with either.  I truly enjoyed the hell out of this.  They worked it like it the chess game that wrestling has always been presented as being.  EVOLVE got more out of Perkins here then TNA does on most weeks.

Drew Gulak came to the ring and took the mic.  Gulak told Williams that he was really proud of him.  Williams offered his hand to Perkins, who took it.

Matt Cage vs. Ethan Page

Page, in keeping with his brash personality, attacked Cage before the bell.  Cage kicked him off the apron and nailed a dive to the outside.  He charged Page on the floor but missed a clothesline and nailed the rail.  He avouded a move by sliding through the guard rail but still ate a boot to the face.  Page tossed him back in the ring and stomped away at him.  He snatched Cage's leg and snapped him out from the buckles, slamming him down.

Page snapped him with chops and right hands.  He continued to control Cage until he tried to do the People's Elbow where he took too long to grandstand and got nailed with a kick.  Cage fired back with several right hands and a kick to the face for a two count.  He  nailed a spinning neckbreaker followed by a Falcon's Arrow for a two count.  Some decent fire out of Cage, although you can tell he's very early in his career.

Page took him back down and called for a move, singing "Ole Ole" to mock Sami Zayn, who is in the house, then hit Zayn's Helluva Kick in the corner.  Cage nailed him with an Unprettier and scored a two count.  Cage went for his finisher, the Money Clip, but Page evaded.  They went back and forth with a flurry of kicks and both men went down as the other connected.

The referee counted them both down but they returned to their feet in opposite corners.  Page went to the ropes but was nailed with a leaping kick to the head.  Cage went for a superplex but was caught and slammed off the top into the ring.  That was different.  Page nailed an Ace Crusher off the ropes followed by a sitdown powerbomb for a two count.  I thought that was going to be the finish.

Oage began berating fans who were giving him static.  That allowed Cage to catch him with a backslide and score the pin.

Your winner, Matt Cage!

Page immediately attacked him and nailed a Rock Bottom.

Solid match.  Page was able to show off his personality, which for him will be what determines his success while Cage gets the surprise win and "shocks" everyone to show he's a potential player down the line while also getting to show how resiliant he is.  I liked where they were going with it.

EVOLVE began playing a taped match as live, they had Sami Zayn come out and confront Ethan Page.  He told Page that before him, he sees someone with all the talent in the word  but someone with a terrible attitude.  Page left the ring and walked to the back, disrespecting him  Zayn then cut a promo saying he was watching last night's show from backstage and really missed being part of independent wrestling.  He said that after 11 years of working to get to WWE, there is a hole in his heart from leaving the independents.  He said he was beyond moved by the response everyone gave him and he realizes that doesn't miss this, because that response belongs to the guys in the back.  He said that those guys are going to carry EVOVLE and the independents to the next level.    He promised big things were coming to EVOLVE.

EVOLVE champion Timothy Thatcher came to the ring.  He said that last night, Zayn called Gargano the best and Thatcher isn't happy about that.  Zayn said that he meant what he said about Gargano - that he is the man.  Zayn said that if Thatcher wants to be considered the man, he will have to defeat Gargano.   Thatcher says when EVOLVE returns to Florida, he will face Gargano.  Zayn says he looks forward to seeing the match and shakes his hand.

As all this was going on, on the iPPV they aired a taped bout from the EVOLVE China tour with Johnny Gargano vs. Ricochet.  Coverage will continue when they return live to action.

Coverage will continue on Page 2!
