2002 - WWE broadcast Confidential.  John Keane filed the following TV report:

Confidential Report for 9/7/2002.
Recorded at the WWE TV Studios in Stamford, CT.
Your Host: Mean Gene Okerlund.

Gene says howdy, informs us we'll be hearing from Brock Lesnar's parents later on. They'll be talking about being in the crowd when their boy became the youngest-ever WWE Champion.

First up is a piece focusing on rookie John Cena. Gene reminds us that John has been impressive right off the bat, looking strong in matches with veterans Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho early on.

We go into a personality profile-surprisingly, John describes himself as a 'jackass'-video rolls of him in goofy costumes clowning around.

We flash back to John's childhood. His dad remembers John's earliest ambition was to be a rock star. John grew up with 3 brothers who pretty much made it a priority to demolish the family home in West Newbury MA. John talks about being the moving force in regards to organizing neighborhood athletic activities. Household chores were a different kettle of fish-his dad remembers John trying to get out of them by citing fear of career-threatening injury (he was 8 at the time).

On to the biz. John, his dad and brothers stared watching wrestling on TV during the birth of Hulkamania. John and his brothers soon organized their own family wrestling fed, John serving as booker.

Moving forward, John admits he developed his 'jackass' persona when he left home to attend boarding school. More goofy video rolls involving generous amounts of near-total nudity.

(Commentary: Weird, I honestly expected John to be the real-life embodiment of Lance Storm's character. Guess looks really can be deceiving.)

John eventually made it to college, where he excelled at football. More about John later-before we break, we get a quick video clip of him in his days in the OVW promotion, cutting a promo with Jim Cornette.

WWE Rewind: From last years Vengeance PPV, Chris Jericho becomes the first WWF Undisputed Champion after pinning Stone Cold Steve Austin.

After Gene talks about attending Ozzfest (?), we move onto a piece on Y2J's band Fozzy. Genesis for the group occurred back in Chris' WCW days, when he met Stuck Mojo guitarist Rich Ward-the group had just done a music video with Diamond Dallas Page. Rich invited Chris to sit in with his part-time jam band, performing heavy metal covers. Crowd response was positive, the band continued performing, eventually drawing music biz interest. The band soon did a Spinal Tap-style 'mockumentary' that heavily featured their mascot, Arthur the Pigman.

We move on to the present. Fozzy has recently released their second CD, 'Happenstance'. Chris feels this release is a big step up from their self-titled debut, mainly due to the inclusion of original material (pretty sure first CD was all covers, may have been one track written by the band). Rich gives praise to Y2J's abilities as a songwriter, while Chris admits to being a shameless promoter who'll do anything to get the band airplay. We see video of the band backstage preparing for their recent appearance on Raw-Big Show claimed to be the bands 'biggest fan' (heh heh). Chris thanks WWE for the promotional assist, but acknowledges the push is a double-edged sword that could have people view the group as 'the band with the wrestler'. He feels Fozzy's music can stand on its own. Video of the Raw performance follows-Chris and Rich give the presentation a big thumbs-up. Break.

Gene returns for our piece on Brock Lesnar and his parents. We hear from the champ-he acknowledges that his match with The Rock at SummerSlam was a big step forward in WWE. He thanks his parents for their support throughout his amateur and professional career. We hear from Stephanie and Richard Lesnar, who had ringside seats for their sons big moment-they quite understandably gush with pride over Brock's performance.

Gets pretty interesting here-Stephanie states the night before the match, Brock told his parents he 'wasn't going to win'. Brock admits he just wanted to swerve them and provide a pleasant surprise at the eventual outcome.

More interesting stuff-we discuss the crowd seeming to turn on the People's Champ in favor of The Next Big Thing. Brock remembers the crowd starting to chant his name as he had Rocky in a bearhug. Video of the end of match rolls-Brock scored the F-5 and got the win to become new Undisputed Champion.

Brock admits that being champ still hasn't totally sunken in. He closes the segment by issuing thanks to The Rock, credits him for 'making' the character of Brock Lesnar. Break.

Gene returns for more on John Cena. After graduating college John moved to California and entered into a career as a professional bodybuilder. Going back in time, John states he started weight training at the age of 12. Clip rolls of John stopping in at the facility where he first started training seriously, the Hard Nocks Gym in his hometown. Flash forward-John talks about hating his job moving weight training equipment (apparently one of the less glamorous aspects of pro bodybuilding). A friend convinced him to give pro wrestling a try, and he eventually signed on with the west coasts UPW promotion. There he was given the gimmick of 'The Prototype', basically a 'half-man, half-machine' cyborg deal. John admits the gimmick might have flown in 1983 but stunk when it was given to him just a few years ago.

We move on to John getting a bit of a break-you might recall a TV show awhile called 'Manhunt', which supposedly had a bit of WWF involvement early on (from what I remember Vince quickly lost interest-can't remember details). Anyways, John got a role on the show as a 'stalker' of contestants.
Show folded quickly, and John went back to working for UPW. John states that visits from WWE agents were fairly regular, and one day Bruce Prichard paid a visit, contract in hand. John quickly accepted and signed with WWE.

Video montage of John from childhood to present day follows. John's pal Rob McIntyre gives praise to his ability as an entertainer, John ends the segment by voicing total dedication to the biz. Break.

Back, we get a segment on Booker T's favorite football player, Philadelphia Eagle' linebacker Levon Kirkland. Recently Levon has been spotted performing Booker's patented 'hand-stare/finger-count' gesture after a big play (no Spinaroonie..yet). Both men give their take on the gesture-each feel their version superior.

Getting serious, Levon admits to being a fan of Booker going back to his days in the 'Harlem Heat' tag team, and continues to enjoy his work in WWE. Levon ends the segment by admitting to his blatant gimmick infringement. Break.

Back, Gene talks up Bubba Ray Dudley and Trish Stratus as a rather unlikely part-time inter-gender tag team. This sets up going behind the scenes with the 2 on a pair of recently filmed Stacker 2 commercials. The spots follow a gangster theme and feature 'Sopranos' star Tony Sirico. Good stuff, Bubba Ray makes a GREAT gunman.

Gene wraps things up by reminding us that last week, Raw GM Eric Bischoff brought the old WCW Championship belt out of retirement, bestowing it on HHH and dubbing him 'World Champion' He references Flair, Hogan, Sting and Goldberg as previous holders, and announces next week we'll be taking a look at the Big Gold Belt's past and future. End of show.

Pretty decent show this week. John Cena segment was surprising but well done. Brock segment was solid, I really think he's going to make a good champion.

2002 - WWE ran a Smackdown brand show in Washington, DC.  Rafael filed the following live report:

Jaime Noble w/Nidia defeated Billy Kidman w/Torrie Wilson to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Title. I’m guessing Kidman and Torrie are together from now on? This was a really good match. Lots of near falls that really got the crowd going. Kidman got a sky-high powerbomb on Noble. This allowed Nidia to get on the apron to distract the ref. Torrie came from around the ring and these two started to go at it. Nidia threw the belt in; Noble grabbed it but didn’t hit Kidman. In the end, after another catfight, Noble got the win by using the tights. Again, really good match. ***1/2

Bull Buchanan defeated Horace Hogan. Worst match of the night here. Lots of stalling in the early goings. Buchanan eventually won using the top rope leg drop. *

Batista defeated Reverend D-Von. This was actually a pretty good match. Batista really looked impressive. He’s from D.C. so he got one of the biggest pops of the night. Before the match started, D-Von got some cheap heat saying we should shut up. It worked. In the end, Batista hit the sit-down powerbomb for the win. **

John Cena, Randy Orton, and Mark Henry defeated Rico, Billy, and Chuck. Billy and Chuck got a nice pop from the crowd, mostly cheers. Cena wore the Redskin colors. Before the match started, Chuck went to the corner while Chimmel was stuck. Chuck then began to rub his crotch in his face. Afterwards, Chimmel walked to Billy who was stretching. Apparently, the joke was that Chimmel was getting Billy from behind. Billy pushed him off to and his face landed on Rico’s crotch. This was a very good match with Mark Henry staying on the apron for basically the entire match. Everyone hit their finishers, which included a crossbody from the top rope by Orton, a superkick by Chuck, and the One and Only by Billy. Henry came in, and powerslammed Chuck for the win. ***

Matt Hardy defeated Hardcore Holly. Matt got the initial pop from the ladies in attendance. This was a pretty good match. Matt won with the Twist of Fate. Afterwards, Matt started a “Holly” chant. He went over and asked for a handshake, Holly gave it to him but then hit the Alabama Slam on Matt. **3/4

Brock Lesnar defeated Undertaker via DQ in a WWE Championship Match. About 5 minutes of stalling before the match began. The match itself was around 15-minutes long. Two ref bumps Lesnar to grab a chair and nail Undertaker over the back. Undertaker grabbed the chair himself and hit Lesnar over the head. Undertaker covered him; the ref rang the bell and asked for the DQ. It was a solid match, from where I sat and I had pretty good seats too. Lesnar worked on Undertaker’s lower back. **

INTERMISSION – I got funnel cake, yay.

Rey Mysterio defeated Eddie Guerrero. This was the best match of the night. A really great match between these two. The crowd was in it for the most port. Mysterio tried the 6-1-9 but Eddie moved off the ropes. Later on, Mysterio botched another 6-1-9. Eventually, Mysterio won with the hurracarana. Afterwards, Mysterio limped off to the back. I’m not sure if he was selling it or if it was legit. ****

Hurricane and Shannon Moore defeated Chavo and Tajiri. This was pretty good, but the crowd could have cared less. Hurricane beat Chavo using the Vertebreaker. **3/4

Kurt Angle defeated Rikishi in a Kiss My Ass Match. This was ok; it mostly had Angle working on Rikshi’s arm. Rikishi actually kicked out of the Olympic Slam. Rikishi had Angle won with the Bonzai Splash, and the ref even counted to three. But, Angle had his hand on the bottom rope. In the end, Angle with a rollup using the arms. Angle got on the house mic and asked for Rikishi to kiss his ass. Rikishi got on his knees, pushed Angle into a corner and delivered the Stinkface. **1/2

Edge defeated Chris Benoit. This was an excellent match, but again, the crowd could have cared less. Benoit delivered some stiff chops that could be heard throughout the arena. Crowd was dead when they started to use some rest holds. Ref bump, Eddie comes in and hits a frog splash on Edge. Benoit covered him, but he still kicked out. Mysterio came in and dropkicked the chair into Eddie’s face. Benoit attacked him, he turned around and Edge delivered the spear for the win. ***3/4

No post-show but I did see Chimmel signing some autographs. Overall, it was a pretty good show even though the crowd was not into some of the matches [Benoit/Edge, Horace/Bull, and the Cruiserweight tag match]. Attendance was really poor. I estimate around 1,500-2,000 people. Floor seats were sold out, and most of the main concourse. The upper level had nobody at all. Really bad showing to an otherwise good show.

Biggest Pops:
Undertaker
Edge
Rey Mysterio
Rikishi
Batista

Biggest Heel Heat:
Kurt Angle
Eddie Guerrero
D-Von
Chris Benoit
Brock Lesnar

ECW Champion Mark Henry vs. The Miz vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. Fit Finlay vs. Matt Hardy.

The ECW belt was at ringside on a pedestal.  Matt Hardy was the first "randomly selected" participant.  The Miz was second.

Miz applied an armbar, but Hardy punched out.  Matt scored a two count with a sunset flip.  Hardy reversed a whip into the corner, but Miz caught Hardy with a back elbow.  Miz went to climb the ropes, but Hardy grabbed him and tried for a crucifix bomb.  Miz struggled out and hit the Reality Check, but Hardy rolled to the floor.  Miz pulled him back into the ring and got a two count as the first five minute period ended.

Chavo Guerrero entered the match.

Matt Hardy went to the second rope for an elbow, but Miz pulled him to the mat hard.  Miz charged Chavo as he got on the apron, but Chavo pulled down the top rope and Miz fell out of the ring.  Chavo went right to the top rope and hit Hardy with a frog splash for the pin.

Advantage: Chavo Guerrero.

Miz got back in the ring and went at it with Chavo, hitting the through-the-ropes clothesline in a corner for a two count.  Miz hit some punches, but Chavo hit a rolling capo kick, sending Miz to the floor.  Chavo dove out of the ring after Miz, then Hardy rejoined the fray, elbowing Chavo off the apron.  Matt put Chavo in the ring and hit an elbowdrop for a two count.  Chavo came back with punches, then went to superplex Miz, who was trying to climb the top rope.  Hardy went to stop Chavo, got shoved to the mat, then Miz shoved Chavo down as well.  Miz dove off the top rope onto Hardy and Chavo, and covered Hardy for a two count.  Matt came back with clotheslines on both men, then backdropped Chavo.  Matt bulldogged Chavo and clotheslined Miz at the same time.  Matt hit Chavo with the Side Effect for the pin.

Fit Finlay, with Hornswoggle, entered the match.  They put up a clock for the final five minutes of the match.

Finlay attacked Henry with punches and kicks, then hit a DDT for a two count.  Finlay gave Henry another DDT for two. Henry punched back and put Finlay in a bearhug.  Hornswoggle ran in, and Henry let go of Finlay and shoved him from the ring.  The referee was distracted and Finlay hit Henry with the Shillelagh.  Finlay and Hardy threw Henry out of the ring.  Finlay then grabbed Hardy and hit the Celtic Cross for a three count.

Advantage: Finlay.

The Miz came off the top rope and hit Finlay, then Hardy gave Miz a Twist of Fate for a three count.

Advantage: Matt Hardy.

Chavo Guerrero came off the top rope with a splash on Miz, but Hardy broke up the cover.  Henry powerslammed Miz, Chavo and Finlay, but every time he went for a cover, Hardy broke it up.  Miz rolled up Hardy, but Henry kicked him in the head.  Chavo jumped at Henry, but Henry powerlsammed him for two, as Hardy brokle it up.  Finlay rolled up Hardy for two, then went for the Celtic Cross again, but Henry broke it up.  Henry splashed Miz, but Hardy broke it up.  Hardy threw Chavo out of the ring, then broke up a Henry cover on FInlay, then threw Miz out of the ring.  Hardy threw Miz out of the ring. Finlay, Chavo and Henry all tried to roll people over for covers, but Hardy kept breaking them up.  Miz got back in and there was a pile up attempt as the final seconds ticked off. No pinfall was scored.

World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase vs. Cryme Tyme.

JTG started off against Rhodes, with Rhodes stalling at the start.  JTG punched away a backdrop attempt, then hit a dropkick.  DiBiase ran in and was given a dropkick as well.  Shad came in and clotheslined both opponents out of the ring.  Shad then threw JTG out of the ring onto DiBiase & Rhodes.  JTG rolled Rhodes back into the ring for a two count.  Rhodes used the pants of JTG to pull him into a corner.  DiBiase tagged in, but JTG hiptossed him.  Shad tagged in, threw JTG into DiBiase with a shoulderblock, then got a two count.  DiBiase hit a jawbreaker and a back elbow, but Shad caught him with a powerslam and an elbowdrop for two. Shad went for a backdrop, but DiBiase hit him with a forearm. Rhodes tagged in, but JTG got the tag and slingshotted into a shoulderblock on Rhodes for a two count.

Rhodes begged off in the corner, then slapped JTG.  JTG chased Rhodes around the ring, and ducked a DiBiase clothesline on the outside, but Rhodes caught him with one as he looked up.  Rhodes rolled JTG into the ring for a two count.  Rhodes drove an elbow into JTG's arm, then applied a top wristlock.  DiBiase tagged in and stomped the arm, then tagged Rhodes, who hit a punch off the top rope on the arm. Winners: Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase.

Post-match, Cryme Tyme started brawling with DiBiase & Rhodes.  But an unidentified large man with a larger afro (Afa Anoai Jr.) came in and helped DiBiase & Rhodes lay them out.

Backstage, a trainer was taping up Shawn Michaels' arm, as they discussed the triceps injury.  A video package on the Jericho-Michaels feud was shown.

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho.

Lilian Garcia explained that this match was unsanctioned, and neither man would hold the other responsible for any injuries that might occur.  Chris Jericho was dressed in his usual ring attire.  Michaels was wearing jeans, cowboy boots, and a tank top. Michaels walked to the ring, staring at Jericho, then dashed into the ring and started punching him.  Michaels kicked and stomped Jericho, then pulled off his cowboy boot and blasted Jericho in the head with it three times.  Jericho fell to the floor while Michaels put his boot back on.  Michaels went to the floor, tackled Jericho over the security wall into the crowd, and continued pounding Jericho.  They went back to ringside, and Michaels catapulted Jericho into the ringpost.  Michaels went under the ring to look for something, then said "Damn it" and got a chair from ringside instead.

Jericho ducked a chairshot and Michaels hit the ringpost.  Jericho lifted Michaels and dropped him head first on the Smackdown announce table.  Jericho gave Michaels a DDT on the padded floor, then went under the ring and pulled out a table, which was broken.  Jericho threw the table at Michaels, hitting him with it.  Jericho pulled out another table and set it up at ringside.  Jericho set up to powerbomb Michaels, but Michaels punched him on the lift.  Jericho fell backwards and threw off Michaels into the ring apron.  Jericho tossed Michaels into the ring and picked up a chair.  Jericho hit Michaels in the gut with the chair, then delivered a chairshot across the back.  Jericho wedged a chair between the top and middle ropes in a corner, then stomped Michaels into the opposite corner. Jericho went for a whip, but Michaels reversed it, sending Jericho back into the original corner.  Jericho went between the ropes and hit shoulder first into the ring post.  Jericho got on the apron, and as Michaels approached him, Jericho hit a series of punches.  Jericho teased a vertical suplex to the floor, but Michaels floated out of it onto the apron with Jericho, then clotheslined Jericho back into the ring.

Michaels hit a series of right hands in the ring, then hit a forearm.  Michaels kipped up, then grabbed Jericho by the throat and started choking him.  Michaels went to the top rope, and hit an elbowdrop.  Michaels called for the superkick and started to stomp in a corner.  Michaels went for the kick, but stopped himself.  Instead, Michaels started punching Jericho in the head.  Michaels hit a series of punches and elbows, then applied a Crippler Crossface.  Jericho stood up in the hold, then yanked Michaels head first into the chair that had been wedged in the corner earlier.  Michaels grabbed his eye in pain.

Jericho punched Michaels twice in the eye, and Michaels fell to the mat.  Jericho pounded the eye, then choked Michaels. Jericho dug into the eye with his fingers.  Jericho jabbed Michaels in the eye, then slapped him in the face.  Michaels responded with punches, but Jericho whipped Michaels into a corner.  Michaels came back with a Thesz press and punched, then a clothesline.  Michaels went for a piledriver, but Jericho tripped out of it and applied the Walls Of Jericho.  Michaels made the ropes, but Jericho didn't have to break the hold, since the match is unsanctioned.  Michaels reached under the ring and grabbed a fire extinguisher.  Michaels reached around and blasted Jericho with the extinguisher to break the hold.

Michaels got to his feet and hit Jericho with the extinguisher, knocking him out of the ring.  Michaels went out after him, kicking him and throwing him into the guardrail.  Michaels threw him into the rail again, as they were working their way up the aisle.  Michaels gave Jericho a vertical suplex on the steel rampway.  Lance Cade ran out and Michaels punched him down and kicked him.  Michaels then went back to Jericho, slugging him down.  Michaels kicked at Jericho's ribs.  Cade got up and hit Michaels in the injured arm, then blasted him with a clothesline.  Cade threw Michaels onto the apron, and Jericho wrapped his bad arm around the ringpost.  Cade delivered a jumping knee to the arm as it was wrapped around the post.  Cade picked up Michaels in the ring and held him and Jericho slapped Michaels,  Cade then stretched out his arm so Jericho could kick it.

Cade went and got a chair for Jericho.  Cade stretched out Michaels' arm and Jericho blasted it with the chair.  Cade stretched it out again, and Jericho blasted it with the chair a second time.  They put Michaels' arm in the chair, and Cade held it in place while Jericho went to the top rope.  Michaels kicked Cade away, and into the ropes, knocking Jericho off balance, crotching him on the top rope.  Michaels superkicked Cade.  Jericho tried to get his feet back under him and climb up the ropes, but Michaels hit him with a chairshot to the head.  Jericho fell off the ropes and through the table on the floor.  Michaels went out of the ring, and with one arm, hit Jericho with three chairshots in a row. Michaels then cleared off the Raw announce table.

Michaels put Cade, still out from the superkick, on the announce table.  Michaels got in the ring and began climbing the ropes, but saw that Jericho was getting up.  Michaels went to the floor, kicked Jericho in the head, and put him on top of Cade on the table.  Michaels got in the ring, then climbed to the top rope.  Michaels jumped off the top rope and elbowdropped Jericho and Cade through the table. Michaels jumped up, then collapsed at ringside briefly before getting back up.  Michaels dragged Jericho back into the ring, then pulled his belt off.  Michaels whipped Jericho, who was bleeding from the nose, across the back several times.  Michaels wrapped the belt around his hand, then put Jericho in a crossface and started pounding Jericho with his leather wrapped fist. Jericho was apparently out cold, but Michaels kept punching him in the head over and over.  The referee stopped the match at the 28-minute mark (actually drawing some boos).  He declared Michaels the winner.

Winner: Shawn Michaels.

Michaels went back on top of Jericho after having his hand raised and punched him some more.  The referee pulled Michaels off of Jericho, so Michaels superkicked the referee.  More referees came out to check on Jericho and the now unconsious ref.  Michaels was shaking in the ring, and he dropped to his knees.  The announcers played up whether Michaels would be able to live with himself for what he had done.  They started playing Michaels' music, and they showed some replays from the match. Michaels left the ring as they had medics checking Jericho.

Backstage, DiBiase & Rhodes introduced Manu (Afa Jr's name) to Randy Orton, pointing out he was the son of Afa.  Manu got in Orton's face, saying he can rip on any other Raw champions, but not these two.  Rhodes asked Orton if he was impressed now.  Orton claimed Rhodes & Orton were lucky, and that he was not impressed at all, then walked off.

They showed the results of a text poll that 77% of those responding felt Big Show was shafted by Vickie Guerrero, since he wasn't included in the WWE Championship Scramble.

Raw General Manager Mike Adamle came out and said CM Punk may not be able to wrestle tonight.  Adamle said he would have to find a suitable substitution if that is the case, and stated that there would be five men in the World Title Scramble later.

Big Show came to the ring and said if Adamle is looking for a substitution, he should look to him.  Show said Adamle wouldn't make such a huge "oversight" the way Vickie Guerrero did. Show asked the fans if they would vote for him to be in the scramble.  The fans responded positively. Vickie Guerrero came out and confronted Big Show in the ring.  Vickie took Show to task for "causing a disruption".  Vickie called him a "big dumb giant".  Vickie said Show now had to deal with the circumstances, and ordered him out of the ring.  The old Undertaker "druid music" started.  Druids brought a casket to the ring, which Big Show applauded.  Vickie looked worried, and Show looked overjoyed as they brought the casket to ringside.  Show made gestures that Vickie was going "bye bye".  Undertaker appeared on the screen over the entranceway.  Taker talked about his plans to destroy Vickie Guerrero.  Big Show grabbed Vickie by the arm so she couldn't escape the ring.  Undertaker's music hit, and he made his entrance.

Big Show picked up the unconscious Undertaker and Vickie slapped him, then spit at him. Big Show and Vickie Guerrero then walked off, leaving the Undertaker laying in the ring.

They recapped the Orton-Punk angle from last week, and the attack from earlier tonight.

Backstage, William Regal told Mike Adamle he wanted Punk's spot in the main event, since he beat Punk to become the King Of The Ring.  Adamle said Punk might still compete, and that he had to check on something.
