PRO WRESTLING GUERRILLA THREEMENDOUS III DVD REVIEW

By Matthew Macklin on 2015-09-04 09:04:19

PWG held Threemendous IV on July 24th and was their 12th anniversary show and as always was held in Reseda California.   The DVD of the event can be ordered at www.Highspots.com.

Team Tremendous (Bill Carr & Dan Barry) defeated The Worlds Cutest Tag Team (Joey Ryan & Candice LeRae

This was a really fun and entertaining opener. Joey Ryan to give his Blow Pop to wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer, who was in the front row. The Blow Pop ended up on the floor and Dan Barry took it and put it in an evidence bag, which was priceless. The story of the match was that Team Tremendous had Joey & Candice scouted and managed to cut off most of their double team. One great spot was when Joey was holding Candice's hand so she could walk the top rope, Barry rolled up Joey forcing him to armdrag Candice off the top rope. Carr did the world biggest Bossman Slam on Candice and also hit a Canadian Destroyer on Joey. Candice hit the Ballsplex on Carr too, which looked incredible. Tremendous have some fantastic double team moves. They won with the Doomsday/Sliced Bread combo. The crowd are starting to turn on Joey Ryan, so we might not be too far away from a breakup for them. This was a huge win for Tremendous over one of PWG's most established tag teams.

Brian Cage defeated Johnny Gargano

This was really good. Gargano started hot with a running dropkick, a lawn dart and a suicide dive to the floor. Gargano powering up Cage for the law dart was impressive. This was a great back and forth match. Gargano hit a Tornado DDT on the floor, which Cage landed badly from. Gargano had lots of nice slick counters. He nicely countered Weapon X into the Garga-No Escape. They exchanged strikes with Cage hitting a big jumping knee and a discus lariat. Cage used his powers to deadlift and powerbomb Gargano several times. The finish came when Cage blocked a Frankensteiner and turned it into a deadlift powerbomb. He followed it up with Weapon X to get the win. The finish was slightly flat, because Cage looked to have slipped off the top rope before powerbombing Gargano, but it was a really good match nonetheless.

Andrew Everett defeated Rich Swann

This was a good match between two of PWG's fastest guys. They slowed it down a bit and it wasn't as bat shit crazy as you might expect it to be. Swann becomes more and more polished all the time as he gains more experience. It was strange seeing him as the veteran of the match. Everett toned it down slightly here, although he did hit a crazy springboard twisting cross body of sorts to the floor. The finish came when Everett hit a spike hurricanrana setting Swann up for a Shooting Star Press to get the three count.

Trevor Lee defeated Tommaso Ciampa

This was a hell of a scrap and a fight. They beat the absolute crap out of each other to the point where neither guy had anything left by the end of it. Ciampa controlled a lot of the match with Lee playing the underdog. Ciampa was very heelish too, which was great. Ciampa laid in the strikes, hitting knees and clotheslines. Lee made a comeback hitting strikes of his own. Lee hit a couple of apron punt kicks, but Ciampa countered and hit an Air Raid Crash on Lee on the apron, with Lee coming down right on his neck. This was extremely physical and was just a good old fashioned fight. The crowd went nuts for a slap exchange which ended up with both guys going down. Lee hit his backflip cross body for the closest of close two counts. The finish came when Ciampa countered the Caveman Stomp into Project Ciampa. As he set up for another, Lee rolled through and hit the Small Package Driver to score an impressive win.

Mike Bailey defeated Chris Hero

This was absolutely awesome! This match is worth the price of the DVD alone and one of my favourite PWG matches in quite some time. They told an amazing story here of Hero as the cocky veteran thinking he could easily beat Bailey, but as Bailey kept coming back and never quitting, Hero became more and more frustrated, eventually costing myself the match. Bailey disrespected Hero by rubbing his bare feet in the face of Hero, and that caused Hero to up the aggression and beat the hell out of Bailey with every striking combination you can imagine. Bailey stayed alive by catching Hero with all sorts of flash kicks, stunning the veteran. It was just fantastic right from the start. Hero is by far and away one of the most under appreciated wrestlers in the world right now. It's the little things that he does that set him apart. This was a huge breakout performance from Bailey. After an incredible battle, Bailey looked like he had Hero beat with a flurry of kicks to the head, but Hero kicked out at one. Hero then delivered a rolling boot and a whole load of rolling elbows, but made the mistake of not pinning Bailey, wanting to put him down once and for all with a Piledriver. Bailey countered with a Jackknife cover to score a huge upset and the biggest win of his career. After the match Hero hugged Bailey and left the ring to him. Just awesome.

Ricochet defeated Akira Tozawa

This was great. We saw the return of Akira Tozawa to PWG after many years. Tozawa got his first big break in the U.S. In PWG and became hugely popular there five or so years ago. Tozawa hasn't wrestled in America since DGUSA died down, so it was great to see him again. Him and Ricochet know each other extremely well, being close friends and teaming regularly in Dragon Gate in Japan. This match started with a lot of comedy and goofing around, but as they started to hit each other harder things began getting more serious. Tozawa's intensity is what always made him stand out to me and we got that here. He hit lots of strikes, fired up when he was down and hit those trademark German Suplexes. Ricochet hit an incredible looking springboard 450 for a great near fall. Ricochet got the win after a Benydriller followed by a spinning reverse Bloody Sunday after a really great series of reversals. Tozawa had a great showing here and hopefully we see him back in PWG more regularly.

After this Super Dragon attacked Ricochet in the aisle and laid him out with a Psycho Driver. From here all hell broke loose with Super Dragon & The Young Bucks (in Super Dragon masks), fighting off and beating down Joey Ryan, Candice LeRae, Akira Tozawa & Mike Bailey. Angelico & Jack Evans then made the save and took out The Bucks with crazy dives to the floor.  This led to...

The Young Bucks defeated Jack Evans & Angelico

Absolute craziness. This saw the return of Jack Evans to PWG and the debut of AAA and Lucha Underground star Angelico. I usually can't stand Evans and think most of his offence is pointless high flying just for the sake of it, but here he looked really good and did a lot of assisted moves along with Angelico. The Bucks caught Evans with superkicks from all sorts of insane positions. I'm not sure if there was even a tag in this, it was mayhem right from the get go with bodies flying everywhere. Evans hit a moonsault to the floor after he bounced on the back of one of The Bucks ad Angelico held him in a firemans carry. Angelico hit his crucifix buckle bomb, which is crazy. The Bucks hit Evans with an Indytaker on the floor and rolled him back in the ring to hit More Bang For Your Buck to score the win. If you like car crash style wrestling, this is the match for you.

After the match the crowd chanted for Evans & Angelico to come back. They will indeed be back as they take part in the Battle of Los Angeles.
