7/1 LUCHA UNDERGROUND REPORT

By Nathan Favell on 2015-07-02 08:41:30

Original Air Date: 7/1/15

This is Nathan Favel and I'm with you, once again, to review the action from this week's Lucha Underground!  In the main event, Prince Puma defends the World Title against one of wrestling's most unappreciated talents in Chavo Guerrero Jr.  Let's get to the action, inside the Temple!

Match #1: Texano vs. Daivari w/ Big Ryck

This was a fine little match that featured some good wrestling.  Daivari is still not the most refined wrestler in the sport, but he does put as much effort into his work as anyone in wrestling's history, so I always enjoy his matches. Texano, on the other hand, is quickly becoming one of my favorite faces in wrestling, as he has an aura about him that makes him so likable, while still retaining his aggressive attitude, which is considerable. The action between the competitors was sufficient, with the proper amount of intensity packed into each move of the match. Overall, this was a good offering that can't be discounted as a worthwhile match.

Winner:  Texano

Match #2:  Drago vs. Hernandez

This match was a fun exchange that was good while it lasted.  The story was that Drago wanted revenge against Hernandez for attacking him a few weeks ago.  Despite being billed as a grudge match, this bout featured many more aerial maneuvers than I expected, which actually slowed the momentum of the match's story to a crawl, leaving this one to feel like a standard match.  These two men tried to make this match-up into something worthwhile, but the booking undermined their efforts, in a match that ended with a disqualification finish that favored Hernandez, but gave Drago the victory.

Winner:  Drago - DQ

Match #3:  Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio/Dos Caras Jr.) vs. Marty The Moth

There wasn't much to this match, as it was a simple, yet spirited, squash match.  Alberto performed very well here and gave Marty his chance to get his act over a bit more by letting him work Alberto over in a few instances.  There isn't much else to say, so I'll just announce the winner:

Winner:  Alberto El Patron

Match #4:  Main Event - Prince Puma (Ricochet [Lucha Underground World Heavyweight Champion]) vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. - No Disqualification Match for the Lucha Underground World Heavyweight Championship:  Konnan's Interference Crowns Chavo Guerrero Jr. the World Heavyweight Champion

The main event was a wonderful bout that was far too short and suffered from overbooking.  As far as the physical portion of the match, you can't have a more magnificent pairing in Chavo and Puma, who were flawless with one another in their grappling, as well as in their lucha maneuvers, which were perfectly executed.  Then, as I was enjoying the match, the bookers sent out The Crew to run an interference angle that halted the progress of the match, as well as my enjoyment in what I was watching.  I don't understand why bookers think these angles work, but interference angles have only worked in a handful of instances, so they should not be relied upon to increase interest in a match, especially when it was doing just fine on it's own.  After The Crew made their presence known, Texano ran down and fended off The Crew, which allowed Puma to get the victory and retain his title!

Winner:  Prince Puma - Lucha Underground World Heavyweight Champion

News of the Night:

#1:  Blue Demon Jr. attacked Chavo Guerrero Jr. in the locker room after the title match, which Chavo was happy about.  The idea, I think, is that Chavo is looking to unsettle Demon enough that he abandons his morals, making him easier to defeat.

Final Verdict:

This was a transitional card that was used to build toward what appears to be the main angles for Ultima Lucha, which is coming in August, if plans remain as they are now. Overall, this was a good show, but it pales in comparison to the "Iron-Man Match" broadcast, which featured my choice for the best wrestling match of the year.  Hopefully, LU will have more matches of that quality in future cards, because if they can't match the excellence of that match soon, then LU will look like a company that has already peaked, which is certainly not the case.

Until next time...
