PRO WRESTLING GUERRILLA'S DDT4 2015 DVD REVIEW: GREAT NIGHT OF TAG ACTION

By Matthew Macklin on 2015-06-29 09:48:18

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla recently released DDT4 2015 on DVD.  The event took place on May 22nd in Reseda California and features the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament, a single elimination tournament with the PWG tag team titles on the line.   PWG DVDs can be ordered at www.Highspots.com.

It should be noted that they had a camera malfunction, so we only had hard camera footage for some of the matches.  This also made the crowd sound a bit quieter than they actually were.  It didn’t take away from it for me at all and I think it’s something most would barely notice.

DDT4 Quarter Final Match: The Beaver Boys (Alex Reynolds & John Silver) defeated Team Tremendous (Dan Barry & Bill Carr)

This was the PWG debut of Team Tremendous, a team with a lot of buzz surrounding them on the east coast.  Bill Carr and Damn Barry are a goofball team of “cops”.  These teams know each other well, but the Beaver Boys comedy is leaving a lot to be desired.  They’d be a lot better off just wrestling.  There was some goofy comedy with Barry & Silver fighting each other on their knees.  One funny moment was when Tremendous tried to interrogate their opponents.  Bill Carr is very reminiscent of The Big Bossman and at one stage caught the smaller Silver with an insane looking Bossman slam as he came off the top rope.  Don’t be fooled by the way Team Tremendous look, because they can go in the ring.  Dan Barry can fly and he and Carr both delivered dives over the top rope.  John Silver’s strength is nuts, for example, he delivered a German suplex on Bill Carr.  It looked like Tremendous had the win when Carr hit a Canadian Destroyer, and Barry hit an Irish Carr Bomb (Spanish Fly) from the top at the same time.  He then hit an Electric Chair Sliced Bread, which is a crazy move, on Silver as Reynolds snuck in to roll up Barry from behind to steal the win.  This was much better than expected and Team Tremendous really impressed in their debut.

DDT4 Quarter Final Match: The Inner City Machine Guns (Rich Swann & Ricochet) defeated Biff Busick & Drew Gulak

The clash of styles here was really interesting with the high flyers Swann & Ricochet against Busick, who is straightforward, intense and smash mouth & Gulak who is a technician that likes to ground guys with all sorts of holds.  The match of Swann & Busick was great with Busick able to look like he was killing the much smaller Swann.  He did a back body drop that sent him over in a complete flip onto his stomach and a running uppercut that almost sent Swann out of the ring.  Ricochet scarily landed on his head after a uppercut/German suplex combo from Busick & Gulak.  Swann showed a far more intense side to himself going nuts with Vader style clubs in the corner.  Swann got the win with a 450 splash from the second rope.  You could tell Swann & Ricochet were holding back here with more matches ahead of them, so it was a nice showcase for Gulak & Busick and a very entertaining match due to the clash of styles.

DDT4 Quarter Final Match: Andrew Everett & Trevor Lee defeated Matt Sydal & Mike Bailey

It was strange seeing Sydal as the old man of the match as he was the veteran in the ring with three guys in their early twenties.  The match started out slowly with Sydal having nice exchanges with Everett.  Lee & Everett worked over Sydal until we got a hot tag to Bailey and all hell broke loose.  Bailey was incredible when he came in delivering all sorts of kicks and strikes and his moonsault knee drop where he looked like he came down on Everetts face.  Sydal hit a lung blower and held Everett in place for Bailey to nail a shooting star knee drop for a fantastic near fall.  Lee & Bailey teased the crazy apron spot from their singles match in PWG a while back, but what we got instead might have been even worse with Lee German suplexing Bailey onto the apron.  If Bailey keeps taking these crazy apron bumps he’ll be crippled by the time he’s 30.  Back in the ring, Lee hit two of his flipping cross bodies and flung Everett in the air into some sort of flip that didn’t go exactly as planned, but it was enough to get the win for Lee & Everett.

DDT4 Quarter Final Match, PWG Tag Team Championship: Monster Mafia (Ethan Page & Josh Alexander) defeated The Worlds Cutest Tag Team (Candice LeRae & Joey Ryan)

We had the first title change of the night here with Monster Mafia winning the PWG tag titles.  This was a hell of a lot of fun with Candice yet again doing incredible things and not looking out of place with the guys.  Page was his usual asshole self and hopefully he gets a singles run in PWG once Josh Alexander retires.  For anyone that hasn’t heard, Josh Alexander is retiring from pro wrestling soon due to a severe neck injury.  It’s a pity because Monster Mafia were just starting to gain momentum and notoriety as a team.  Candice was singled out and made an incredible comeback.  She Balls-plexed Alexander into the corner, which took out the referee in the process.  This led to Roderick Strong getting involved taking out Candice with a Sick Kick and the End of Heartache.  Joey Ryan was left to fight on his own and came close to pulling out a miracle before being put down with a double team Neutraliser.  It was a really fun match and at least Monster Mafia got to be PWG tag team champions before Alexander has to retire.

DDT4 Semi Final Match, PWG Tag Team Championship: The Beaver Boys defeated Monster Mafia

And straight away we had the second title change of the show.  This match wasn’t anything hugely memorable, but it wasn’t bad either.  They started brawling around ringside and John Silver showed off his incredible strength.  This was the most impressive Beaver Boys have looked in the ring, putting together some nice combos of moves.  The finish came when Reynolds was low blowed by Page as they struggled over bringing the belt into the ring, behind the refs back Silver delivered a belt shot of his own, to steal the win and the PWG tag team titles.  Monster Mafia were much more deserving of a place in the final.

DDT4 Semi Final Match: Andrew Everett & Trevor Lee defeated The Inner City Machine Guns

This one was nuts.  There was all the crazy, fast paced flying that you can imagine with these guys involved.  Lee hit a dive over the ringpost, and just as he landed Ricochet one upped him with one of his own.  Lee and Everett are such a great team and have some crazy double team moves, such as Everett hitting a reverse hurricanrana followed up by  Lee’s caveman stomp.  My favourite part of the match was when Lee hit his flipping cross body, Swann hit a hand spring cutter, Everett hit a springboard shooting star press where he jumped into the camera shot, and Ricochet hit a Benydriller which led to all four men being down, which was just so good.  Lee & Everett got the win with an Orange Crush from Lee and a spike hurricanrana from Everett.  This was a huge win for Lee & Everett over PWG’s established high flying tag team.

Johnny Gargano defeated TJ Perkins

This was fantastic.  It was a great, back to basics, pure wrestling match.  Gargano & Perkins styles complimented each other perfectly and they were able to counter each other’s submission holds beautifully.  Perkins is such a great mix of Lucha style stuff and great mat wrestling.  Some of the ways he can transition into an armbar are incredible to watch.  The finish saw Gargano with a beautiful counter of his own as he escaped an armbar and locked Perkins in the Garga-No Escape to get the submission win.  Excellent match.

PWG World Championship: Roderick Strong defeated Brian Cage & Chris Hero

Roderick was at his finest here as he tried everything he could to trick Cage & Hero into fighting each other.  Obviously, it didn’t work and we had Cage & Hero team up on Strong.  Of course, it eventually all broke down and became every man for himself.  Cage was an absolute machine and he has improved so much since he started in Lucha Underground and working in Mexico.  Hero delivered more elbow strikes than anyone could ever count on Cage and just as he was about to piledrive Cage for the finish, Strong re-emerged with knee strike on Hero and Sick Kicks for both Hero & Cage until he pinned Cage to retain the title.  It was a really good triple threat match, with everyone looking good.

DDT4 Final, PWG Tag Team Championship: Andrew Everett & Trevor Lee defeated The Beaver Boys

PWG get criticized a lot for their matches being nothing but spot fests, which isn’t the case, and this was a perfect example of that.  This match told a fantastic story built around the knee of Andrew Everett.  After Everett flew around the ring for the beginning portion of the match, he was cut off by The Beaver Boys targeting the knee that he has major reconstructive surgery on.  Everett sold the hell out of it and did little things like slipping as he would go for a springboard to sell the severity of it.  We had an incredible near fall after Lee was tagged in with Lee hitting the flipping cross body, and Orange Crush and Everett hitting a 630, only for the pin to be broken up.  Silver then went crazy and flung Everett into the ringpost and into the chairs at ringside, leaving Lee alone.  The Beaver Boys attempted to use one of the belts as a weapon yet again, but Lee stole the win with a small package, winning DDT4 and the tag titles for himself and Everett.  It was the match of the night and an awesome main event, with incredible performances by everyone involved. Beaver Boys can be great when they stay away from the absurd comedy, and Lee & Everett could have a great future as a team.

It was another really good show from PWG. PWG DVDs can be ordered at www.Highspots.com.
