GREATEST GIMMICK MATCH EVER, TV TITLE, SENDING MAIN ROSTER TALENTS TO NXT AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2015-06-11 10:00:00
We've seen many gimmick PPV's/matches in WCW and WWE over the years, which type of gimmick PPV's/matches were/are your favorite and why? Any 'hidden gem' (one time only gimmick PPV/match) that we should watch or that you would like to see return?

My all-time favorite gimmick match is Wargames - The Match Beyond. Two rings enclosed in a steel cage with a roof. The periods allowed for drama to build over the course of the match and with a submission ending only, there was no way to cheat the fans out of a blowoff ending. It was Dusty Rhodes' greatest creation and with good reason.

I read on your site that sometimes the reason that we don't see a main-roster wrestler on weekly tv is that there's nothing for him/her storyline-wise. What would be your opinion on sending that wrestler to NXT for a short-term storyline (a few weeks or so) feuding with one of the NXT talents? I think it would give that wrestler exposure on what has become a very strong brand, it could help the NXT talent evolve/mature and it would be very interesting to see. Your thoughts?

I like that idea a lot. Zack Ryder is now teaming with Mojo Rawley in NXT, which is along the lines of your concept. I'm all for anything that gives the guys and girls a chance to be showcased and if it helps the younger developmental talent as well, it's a no-lose situation in my mind.

I think Kevin Kelly is a good play by play commentator, but I'm watching NJPW on AXS TV and Mauro Ranallo is great, maybe the best I've heard since Joey Styles. Do you think ROH should try and sign Ranallo? I think he can make ROH even that more fun to watch.

Ranallo is awesome, but Kevin Kelly is perfect for Ring of Honor. I don't think ROH should replace him.

From what I understand, the original concept of a TV title was for it to be a secondary title defended strictly on TV since the heavyweight Title was rarely defended on TV, and mostly used to sell house shows. So my question is, Where were the first TV titles defended? Who were the First TV champions? And, now that the concept of a TV title is outdated, What do you prefer for a name of a secondary Title?

There may have been others regionally, but off the top of my head, the first TV champion I can recall was in Jim Crockett Promotions. The idea was that the wrestler was the best wrestler on TV. It was a way to have a belt that could be chased and defended on TV without exposing the belts that drew on the house shows. Obviously, over time that changed but the original concept was sound. I've never really cared what a secondary title should be called. In my mind, if it was treated with credibility, that's what made it important.

Is there any update on when/where NXT will have a live event if they come to New York before SummerSlam?

We've heard nothing officially in that regard.
