WHY ALEX RILEY HADN'T BEEN USED, HOGAN VS. PIPER AT STARRCADE, BEEFCAKE-WWE AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2015-03-13 10:00:00
I'm re-watching the main event of Starrcade 1996 (Hulk vs Piper) and after the finish, when Piper is celebrating his win, one of the announcers state that he is the WCW Champion. But, the next night on Nitro, Hulk is still champ? Is there a story here? The announcers announced Piper as the new WCW Champion and the match was the main event of WCW's biggest annual PPV. Was Piper meant to be the champion? Did this have something to do with the fan running into the ring moments before the end of the match?

WCW failed to promote that the match was actually non-title and didn't reveal that until after the PPV. It was absolutely beyond lame.

After seeing Alex Riley's promo after his return match to NXT, I have to ask the $20 question: What did this guy ever do to be buried the way he was? He has the build, he has the look. He was being pushed for a period of time and then all the sudden he was gone. I know there was previously rumors of issues with him and John Cena, but you cannot tell me Superman's pull is such that a guy gets buried for 5 years. There has to be something going on. Any ideas/thoughts?

There have been reports for years that Riley did something to end up on the wrong side of John Cena and politically ended up iced out. Former WWE star Tyler Reks, in a DVD shoot interview, stated that Riley went from "partying on" Cena's bus to Cena ripping him in front of the locker room. So, THAT may have been a factor, but unless Cena or Riley comment, we will never know for sure. It's also important to remember he got nailed with a DUI several years ago, so he might have been in purgatory for that. We don't know. Obviously, someone in the company liked him, because if not, he'd have been released a long time ago. His NXT promos of late have been awesome, so hopefully he gets the most out of this new opportunity.

I'm always curious as to why Brutus the Barber Beefcake has never returned to the WWE. Hulk Hogan Appreciation Night, WWE Network documentaries, when ever there's a hair match. There has been a few opportunities to bring him in for a cameo but it's never happened. Is there a reason?

I don't know 100% but it's possible some of it has to do with WWE trying to prevent him from using the name and the gimmick outside of the company, which led to some legal wrangling. However, a lot of those Hogan is closest with personally - Beefcake, Brian Knobbs, etc. haven't returned to WWE with him, so it also may just be a creative choice, or a sign that Hogan doesn't have the stroke to get them in this time around as he did with TNA, WCW, etc.

Why did Joel Gertner disappear from FWE right after debuting?

I don't know for sure, but if could be that their next dates didn't work with Gertner's real life schedule or it could have been money or creative issues where they didn't agree on a price or direction. It's the independents, so everything and everyone is working fly by night, really. There's no contracts.

Why do you think Cena became so successful? He was an average wrestler, at best. Definitely had the "it" factor, but cant say I ever saw his "legacy" coming

Work ethic, a ton of charisma and the company realized he had both and pushed him to the moon. He was the right guy to build around and there's been no one better to replace him with. If there was, he wouldn't be the guy a decade later.

Is Extreme Rising ever coming back?

I really think that promotion is gone forever but it all depends on whether promoter Steve O'Neil decides to run and thinks wrestlers will work for him and fans will come to the shows. Stranger things have happened!
