MEMPHIS STAR AL GREENE PASSES AWAY

By Mike Johnson on 2014-12-29 13:45:29
Al Greene, who was a huge star in the Memphis territory in the 1960s and 1970s, passed away on 12/26.

Greene, a native of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, was an amateur wrestler who moved into professional wrestling. Originally billed as "Hard Rock" Al Denney, he eventually morphed into using his real name and held the Memphis version of the World Tag Team championships numerous times with his brother Don Greene in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The duo used the "Heavenly Bodies" moniker.

Some of the brothers' notable feuds were against Les Thatcher & Bearcat Brown, Johnny Walker & Dennis Hall, Jerry Jarrett & Tojo Yamamoto and Kurt & Karl Von Brauner.

Greene also teamed with Phil Hickerson to hold the Memphis tag belts.

As a singles star, Greene was most notably known for a long feud with Jackie Fargo (a clip of one of their bouts can be seen above).

Greene had been in a wheelchair in recent years but was a regular at the reunions wrestling author and historian Scott Teal has put together for former stars in Tennessee.
