BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING ON TELEVISION INCLUDING TRIBUTE TO THE TROOPS

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-12-21 07:24:42
After a week where four shows did not qualify for this column, we only had one show that lacked any qualifying matches. While we had the full docket of WWE shows, we had a live Smackdown on Tuesday night as well as the annual Tribute to the Troops Special. The matches for Tribute to the Troops are not part of this column, but their totals are below.

The six shows that did qualify provided us with 157 minutes of wrestling, almost doubling the total from the three shows that qualified last week.

Raw won the week with 45 minutes of wrestling, an increase of 19 minutes from last week. Smackdown finished in second place with 31 minutes of wrestling. Ring of Honor fell into third place with a two minute drop from last week to finish with 28 minutes of wrestling. Main Event finished in fourth place with 24 minutes of wrestling. NXT had 19 minutes of wrestling on the first show after Takeover to finish in fifth place. Superstars brought up the rear after taking a week off for a best of show but they did fall under their Network average with only 10 minutes of wrestling.

Of the 25 matches that aired on television this week, 44 percent of those matches were either a one minute or ten minute match. The six ten minute matches is the most for a week since the week of November 10th when we had a second consecutive week of eight ten minute matches. The five one minute matches is the highest total since the week of October 27th when we had six one minute matches.

This week, we saw Smackdown pass 7,200 minutes of wrestling, Superstars passed 4,100 minutes of wrestling, and Ring of Honor passed 3,900 minutes. If Raw is able to maintain its averages, they will pass 9,000 minutes and it will put the overall total past 38,000 minutes.

We passed 6,800 matches this week. Since next week’s Ring of Honor show is going to be the Tag Wars final, it appears that we will only have two matches so we will have to wait until the first match of the Nashville tapings to give us our 500th Ring of Honor match.

With Tag Wars being an elimination match, it is possible that we could see the longest television matches challenged for a new entrant. If it is 24 minutes, it will tie two other matches for the third longest match. We saw a match come close to the top three with the main event of Raw that went 20 minutes.

The times for the matches on Tribute to the Troops were:

Goldust and Stardust versus Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso: 8 Minutes
Divas Santa’s Helper Battle Royal: 4 Minutes
Dean Ambrose versus Bray Wyatt: 11 Minutes
Ryback, Erick Rowan, John Cena, and Dolph Ziggler versus Seth Rollins, Big Show, Kane, and Luke Harper: 10 Minutes
