BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-11-24 07:56:42
This week marks the end of an era, at least for the next few weeks. This past Wednesday was the final first run episode of Impact and next week will see the second time in the history of this column that there will not be an episode of Impact. With the go home episodes of the WWE shows before Survivor Series, it is not surprising that the totals for the WWE shows dropped from last week, but every show, except for Superstars saw a drop from last week. There was a 45 minute drop in the amount of wrestling, led by a 16 minute drop from NXT.

Raw won the week, but for the second straight week, the total dropped from the previous week and we were back under forty minutes. Impact finished second and dropped ten minutes from last week, but stayed above 30 minutes for the fourth consecutive week and the 18th time in the last 20 weeks. Ring of Honor took third place thanks to the longest match of the week, a match I consider to be must see between Hanson and AJ Styles. Smackdown finished in fourth place with 23 minutes of wrestling, the eighth straight week under 30 minutes. Main Event finished in fifth place with 22 minutes of wrestling. Superstars had its first week out of last place for the first time in eight weeks with another week with 13 minutes of wrestling. NXT finished in last place with 10 minutes of wrestling.

This week saw NXT give us only 10 minutes of wrestling in the six matches that aired on the show. This was the lowest total since the April 12, 2011 episode of NXT when Titus O’Neil versus Darren Young, Jacob Novak versus Byron Saxton, and Lucky Cannon versus Yoshi Tatsu gave us nine minutes of wrestling. The 1.67 minute per match average is the lowest for any single show. Prior to this week, the lowest average match length was on the January 27, 2012 episode of Smackdown that averaged 1.71 minutes per match when they had 7 matches with 12 minutes of wrestling.

The two longest matches of the week were longer than the total amount of wrestling on NXT this week. Two other matches were the same length as the total amount of wrestling on NXT.

While the number of ten minutes matches was cut in half from the last two weeks, it is possible that we could hit 1,000 ten minute matches before we get through 250 weeks of this column. Since three of the four ten minute matches this week were from ROH and TNA, it might be hard to get to 1,000 in the next two weeks. The Hanson versus AJ Styles match gave us our 300th ten minute match combined for ROH and TNA.

After a week without any one minute matches, we had four this week. Included in that total were three matches from NXT. With those three matches on NXT, it sets up an interesting tidbit with the overall one minute matches. When you take Raw and Smackdown with their 365 one minute matches between the two shows, the remaining 156 one minute matches are split equally between the other WWE shows and non-WWE shows. NXT, Superstars, and Main Event have 78 one minute matches while ROH and Impact have 78 one minute matches. Thankfully, the Elgin/Coleman match dragged out to more than 90 seconds.

The time for the Michael Elgin versus Caprice Coleman match was from the opening bell until they went to commercial.

This week’s Main Event on Main Event was the 5,000th WWE match since I started this column.

Raw passed 8,800 minutes of wrestling. Smackdown went past 7,100 minutes of wrestling.
