THE WWE NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS TIP SHEET

By Dave Scherer, Mike Johnson & Richard Trionfo on 2014-09-20 11:54:19
WWE will present the 2014 Night of Champions PPV from Nashville, TN this Sunday night. Here is our take on the show.

WWE World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar with Paul Heyman vs. John Cena.

Dave: I will admit it, I am scared. Really scared, that they will put the Title back on Cena. The way that they should book it is that it’s a much more even contest, where Cena redeems himself and loses a very close match. That would allow them to move Cena away from the Title, where he doesn’t need to be, and give the company a stronger champion that can be used at a later date to elevate a younger talent. I could even see a scenario where Rusev stays unbeaten and gets a shot a Brock down the road. The point is, the totally right thing to do is to create new guys at the top and Cena and Brock can do that. I just hope that Vince McMahon breaks his dependence on Cena as the only guy on top for the good of the future.

Mike: Brock should go over here. To me, having Cena get the win a month later not only negates the Summerslam win, but also the Undertaker streak-ending by proxy. I have no problem with Cena being the guy ready to fight but the rematch was booked far too soon to truly be the "Rocky" comeback. I pray I am not wrong here, but I am going with Lesnar winning.

Richard: I would be looking forward to this match more if we were talking about Survivor Series, TLC, or Royal Rumble because we would have months of John Cena trying to figure out a way to beat Brock Lesnar instead of five weeks and John was at 100% after the beating when other people have been ‘injured’ after less intense matches. I don’t think we see 16 German suplexes on Sunday, but we should get a few. If they decide to go down the same path as SummerSlam with a methodical destruction by Lesnar (which I don’t see happening), I hope they make it a shorter match. Cena will get in some offense, but Lesnar should win this because it is ‘Best for Business’. The last thing I want is for this feud to have a trilogy that ends at Hell in a Cell because I think they already have a match worthy of the main event.

Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins.

Dave: This is a big match for Reigns to show whether his growth as a single is taking shape. I hate that they did the match on Raw already. If they hadn’t, I would have predict a Roman win here. Now that they did, it wouldn’t shock me to see them screw Roman here to keep the feud going.

Mike: I am calling for a no contest here. Reigns already got the win on Raw and Rollins beating him derails the momentum Reigns has. I am guessing a Dean Ambrose surprise attack on Rollins ends this without any clear victor and Reigns moves back over to Randy Orton.

Richard: Since we saw Reigns win clean over Rollins, do we need this match on the show? If they would have had Ambrose’s music play and lead to the ‘hey, there is music, I have to focus on that instead of my opponent’ loss. I think Reigns wins on Sunday and then we see Rollins angry and wondering how could he have lost to Reigns twice in a week. Then while Rollins is in the ring or walking to the back, someone comes out of nowhere to attack Rollins, and it is the return of Dean Ambrose to set up the Hell in a Cell Match I have wanted to see for the last few months.

Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton.

Dave: Jericho is leaving. Orton is staying and is an important piece of the puzzle. It would make no sense to have Jericho win here.

Mike: Jericho's last official night is the PPV, although in the past that last night ends up bleeding over to Raw the next day. If this match happens (see my Peep Show comments) Orton should get the win here. This should be very good from an in-ring perspective.

Richard: Orton should win this one and since Jericho is taking time off, why not return to the head kicking Randy Orton to make him dangerous one more time as well as maybe have people suggest that Orton is showing the attitude to try to challenge for the World Title.

WWE United States champion Sheamus vs. Cesaro.

Dave: This should be a really good match but man, these two deserve a much better build than they have been given. Cesaro has been beaten like a doll the last few months so him winning here wouldn’t mean a thing, other than to hurt Sheamus in the process. Sheamus should win.

Mike: The build to this has been horrible, but they are both really physical beasts in the ring. I have hope for this one really being a good old JR-style Slobberknocker. I'm not certain who gets the win here but my heartstrings are pulling for Cesaro, who's been off the rails in terms of momentum since he won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. They can right the ship here with a Neutralizer and title win. This has the potential to be quite the brawl.

Richard: If Brock Lesnar was not on this show, I would say that this will be the hardest hitting match of the night. Sheamus is another person who they could be trying to groom into a challenger for Lesnar if Cena is going to be out of the picture for any period of time. I would like to see Cesaro win the title, but with his last title reign, it did not do much to help him in the long run.

WWE Intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz with Damien Sandow.

Dave: The question is does Mizdow get involved to help Miz win the Title back. Personally, I don’t want to see it. Miz is what he is, but if they get behind Dolph, for once, and give him a chance they might find they have something in him. What a shock! Dolph should retain.

Mike: Again, no momentum for the challenger. I am calling for a Ziggler win here. They had a really good match last month, so I hope they get the time to repeat that. I'm curious to see if R-Truth is with Ziggler again here.

Richard: If they wanted to have fun with this match, they should let Truth and Sandow take over when it looks like Miz or Ziggler are winded. We are approaching the time of year when Ziggler seems to get his push so I think he will retain.

WWE Divas champion Paige vs. Nikki Bella vs. AJ Lee

Dave: One of these things, is not like the other…….and that leads me to believe that AJ and Paige will cost each other the match letting Nikki take the Title to Total Divas. God, I hope that doesn’t happen.

Mike: This storyline...wow. In a perfect world, Lee lays them all out and leaves with the belt. However, my guess is that Nikki ends up with the title here so that Brie has something to chase, since it's obvious they want the title belt as part of the program. The real question is how far they go with Paige and Lee?

Richard: I have the same fear as Dave, but I also think that it could lead to a situation where Nikki is the one to get pinned and allow AJ or Paige to say that they did not get pinned so they can continue the feud. If Paige beats Nikki, that can lead to the one on one match between AJ and Paige that we would probably prefer to see.

WWE Tag Team champions The Usos vs. Goldust & Stardust.

Dave: The Usos have been solid champs but it’s time to see what you have in the Dusts. Switch the belts and see how they get over as champs.

Mike: I don't see any reason to take the belts off The Usos unless they want them to chase the titles and eventually get them back. This has the potential to be great.

Richard: The Usos suddenly have Cena healing powers to take away the one thing that could signal the end of the title reign for the Usos, but they have been involved in more perilous situations only to fight through and retain. This is the time that the cosmic key is found and the thuns of the thun of a plumber will get their titles back.

Mark Henry vs. Rusev with Lana.

Dave: They have to keep Rusev unbeaten but boy, this could be fun stuff. I expect these guys to have a good big man match.

Mike: Mark Henry should really be praised for all the hard work he's put into this in the last few weeks. He's taken something that was OK on paper and made it really good. I expect Rusev will get the win here but not before Henry has a few hope spots.

Richard: Rusev should win but I am looking forward to this more than any of the Rusev/Swagger matches. Since Henry was able to fight out of the Accolade, it will make it more impressive when Rusev does it on Sunday.

The Peep Show with Chris Jericho (Pre-Show)

Dave: This should be interesting as Christian returns.

Mike: Unless this ends with Christian beating the hell out of Jericho so bad that his match with Orton is canceled - so we can use this to introduce Christian back to the roster as a badass, waste of time.

Richard: Since they are hyping this for the Kickoff show, I wonder if they will get Orton involved as well. When I heard that Christian and Jericho were going to be together, I was hoping they would bring back the third member of the storyline surrounding Wrestlemania 20.
