STEAMBOAT VS. SAVAGE, COLE VS. ROSS, PITBULLS, BRAD MADDOX AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2014-09-11 09:59:16
Where's Brad Maddox????

In a cave in Mexico! No, he's actually under contract to WWE and waiting for them to give him a storyline reason to return to the ring.

Where's Christian?

In a cave in Mexico with Brad Maddox! Christian is waiting for the company to tell him they want to use him in the ring again. There was concern over his well being after he suffered so many injuries in a short period of time, so they are a little gunshy on him. I wouldn't be shocked to see him on the NXT Takeover show tonight.

I recently listened to Steve Austin’s podcast with William Regal. It was a really good listen, but at a certain point when Austin asks him about his favorite matches and steers the question towards Savage v Steamboat WMIII Regal remarks that he could never look at it the same after discussing it with Savage. Austin seemed to agree and then quickly change the topic. Any idea what was going on here? Is there some bad secret about that match not widely known? Keep up the great work.

It's not that it's a bad secret, but it's how they put the match together. Steamboat has told the story publicly. He and Savage crafted the match and then broke it down by each spot, then gave each spot a number. They then memorized it and for months would test each other on where they would go in the match based on a certain number. Since it wasn't called in the ring, there are workers who become disappointed when they learn how planned in advance the entire thing was.

Hi, I remember seeing many comments before about how the fans hate Michael Cole's commentating, and saying that JR was the best. I had a thought about it and came up with some plausible reasons and wanted to hear your opinions. With JR, he always showed genuine emotion when calling the matches, he would get excited and worked up just like the fans would, which I believe created a certain connection, because he seemed and sounded like a fan just like everyone else. JR did say before that he would go out of his way to make sure that he didn't know what sort of spots would happen in any match, so that his reactions would be as real as possible, which definitely helped him. Cole was a former war correspondent, and I believe that he must've been trained to remain calm and composed at all times. These traits of his stuck with him when he became a commentator, which had the unfortunate effect of him remaining calm and composed during segments or spots that would've had anyone else worked up, and probably chained into him having to fake his emotions and fake getting worked up. All these would've made Cole's commentating seem very unnatural compared to JR's. A more minor point I think might have to do with their natural voices. Just like how certain wrestlers just don't have the right type of voice to make good promos, like Lashley, maybe certain people just don't have the right type of voice for commentary. To me, Cole's relatively higher voice is often quite grating, while JR has a really good radio voice, which incidentally got deeper as he grew older, which helps with commentary since we only hear his voice without seeing him on the screen. Thoughts?

I think you make some damn good points. I personally think Cole is a good announcer, but I also believe that he's doing what the company wants him to do. If he was just going to call moves, he'd probably be closer to what the fans expect out of a classic announcer.

Where's The Pitbulls from ECW today? Been watching them on the Network and I'm pretty impressed.

Pitbull#1, Gary Wolf, still lives in Philly and trains talents and works the indy scene. Pitbull #2, Anthony Durante, who was as nice as he was legitimately tough, sadly passed away several years ago.
