BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-02-16 08:53:56
The penultimate week of the fourth year of this column ends with a rather momentous event. For the first time since the week of April 22, 2013, Superstars moved out of the cellar and had more wrestling than a show. This week, it was NXT that moved into last place.

Before we talk about the bottom of the totals, Raw won again, extending its streak to 25 weeks. Raw could not sustain its streak of record setting totals and fell by 17 minutes from last week’s high. Smackdown finished in second place and increased its total from last week by 4 minutes and has had four straight weeks with increasing totals. Main Event finished in third place. Impact increased its total for the second straight week after falling below 20 minutes but finished in fourth place. Superstars did not finish in last place and beat NXT by 1 minute.

Superstars’ victory over NXT puts Superstars back into fourth place overall by 1 minute. Superstars is now only 1,994 out of third place and 3,403 minutes behind Raw.

Superstars getting out of last place is not the only infrequent event to take place. The Jinder Mahal versus Big E Langston match on Main Event was only the second time that there was a one minute match on Main Event. That took place on April 10, 2013 and the match also involved Big E Langston. Langston’s opponent that day was Zack Ryder.

Raw was able to pass the 7,000 minute and 1,400 match barriers this week, but it was not able to break through the 5 minute average match mark. If there were five more minutes (sounds like it could be a good chant some day) or one fewer match (why couldn’t they have been the one to pull a match instead of Smackdown), the totals would have given us exactly 5 minutes per match. In the last eight weeks, the match length has increased by almost a tenth of a minute.

NXT and Superstars both passed 3,600 minutes this week. Next week, Impact should pass a new barrier while Smackdown will need to keep up its recent totals to go over 6,000 minutes next week. We also passed the 5,500 match barrier this week for total matches. In a bit of a quirky situation akin to the tie between NXT and Superstars last week, the numbers for Impact and Smackdown are the same (5,596 versus 5,965).

For the first time since the week of September 16, 2013, we had five one minute matches. This was also the first time since the week of June 24, 2013 when the amount of one minute matches equaled or exceeded the number of ten minute matches (four of each).

For the second time in three weeks, NXT has averaged less than three minutes per match.

While the matches on this week’s Ring of Honor television do not qualify for this column, here are the match lengths from the program that aired featuring matches from the Pittsburgh show: Michael Bennett versus Romantic Touch was 7 Minutes; Michael Elgin and Chris Hero versus The Briscoes versus Matt Hardy and Adam Cole was 24 Minutes. The Briscoes were in the match for 18 minutes while the other two teams were in for the full 24 minutes.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
