BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH PLUS A LOOK BACK AT SEASON FIVE OF NXT

By Richard Trionfo on 2012-06-17 14:03:41
With one more hour of wrestling than last week, you would think that the totals would be up, but instead the amount of wrestling was the same as last week. Since Raw was three hours this week, compared to the usual two hour show (until we hit episode 1,000) you would think that we were going to get more wrestling than last week. However, with almost forty minutes of wrestling last week, it was going to be close when you look at the hourly average. Instead, we saw a three minute drop from last week with sixty more minutes of television time. Raw did win the week, but only by two minutes over Impact.

The biggest increase from last week was from Impact which saw a fifteen minute increase, and the show featured the longest match of the week. NXT and Superstars were also up from last week with one minute increases. The other two shows saw drops with Smackdown falling by nine minutes to finish in last place with only sixteen minutes of wrestling for the final show from WWE before their pay per view. Ring of Honor was down five minutes from last week.

When you have a show with sixteen minutes of wrestling and six matches, there is a likelihood that there are going to be a number of short matches. It makes things worse when one match takes up half of the total wrestling for the show. Smackdown had another week with a per match average less than three minutes. Taking out that opening match, the average for the other five matches was less than two minutes. Smackdown is now over ninety one minute matches. Since the start of April, there have been twenty-five one minute matches from Smackdown. Only once in the last eleven weeks has there been an episode of Smackdown without a one minute match. Five times we have seen three or more one minute matches in those eleven weeks.

With eight matches over the three hours of Raw, we passed the seven hundred match barrier. Smackdown passed the four hundred match barrier. Next week, we will hit the three thousand total match barrier.

While I do not normally focus on the overall totals and match averages, this week’s pathetic totals from Smackdown in the match average category moved Smackdown into fifth place while a strong week from Impact moved them into fourth place by .0024 minutes. In the last twenty-one weeks, Impact has gained .116 minutes per match while Smackdown has dropped .238 minutes per match.

The drop for Smackdown is more evident with the average amount of wrestling per hour. When we hit the 100 week mark, Smackdown averaged 14.125 minutes of wrestling per hour. After twenty-one weeks, Smackdown has seen its match average drop by .348 minutes per hour. On the other side of the ledger, NXT has seen an increase of almost a minute per hour of wrestling in the last twenty-one weeks.

We have been wondering for the last four or five months about when Season Five of NXT was going to end. We found that this week was the final episode of NXT Redemption. As the Never Ending Season of NXT ends, here are the totals for Season Five of NXT:
