QUICK THOUGHTS ON CHRIS JERICHO'S ACTIONS AND SUSPENSION

By Dave Scherer on 2012-05-25 10:50:28
I am getting a lot of "what is WWE doing suspending Chris Jericho" emails and rather than answer them all individually, I will give you my take on it.

*First and foremost, what he did was a serious crime in Brazil.  If he were Dave Scherer down there on vacation, he (I) would have been arrested for what he did.  He was allowed to apologize and leave because he was a performer.  What could be seen as getting heel heat in the US is a serious violation of the law in Brazil.  They don't allow that law to be broken for the sake of an entertainment event.  As the old saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse when you break it.  Jericho was ignorant and got off lightly, all things considered.

*Once the situation got out and hit the media WWE, as a publicly traded company, was put in a position where they had to take action.  Again while some don't see what the big deal is here look at it like this.  Jericho broke a major law in Brazil.  If a WWE wrestler were charged with a serious felony in the US, or was even accused of one with a lot of proof behind it, they would have no choice but to suspend that person. The same holds true here.

*Lastly, based on precedent alone one could argue that WWE should have fired Jericho.  If you think that is ridiculous consider this.  Dave Finlay was fired for allowing a heel to interrupt the national anthem at a WWE show.  That isn't even illegal, but members of the National Guard were there (and interestingly enough the Guard is a WWE sponsor) so Finlay was fired.  He broke no law.  Jericho did.  All things being equal, WWE should have fired Jericho. For the record, I am glad they didn't but I don't think they should have fired Finlay either.  But as Finlay's firing shows, they will do what they feel they need to do as a traded company and sometimes that means that guys will be thrown under the bus and run over.

So in closing for those of you think that Jericho is getting a raw deal, there is the other side of the coin. Going forward, with shows in other countries such as China, WWE really needs to educate their talent on what is and isn't acceptable in the places that they tour.
