DWAYNE JOHNSON EXPLAINS WHY HE'S EMBRACED RETURN TO THE ROCK AND WWE, VARIETY PLOTS WHAT'S NEXT FOR JOHNSON'S CAREER

By Mike Johnson on 2012-03-26 09:20:04
Variety featured a long piece on Dwayne Johnson's return to pro wrestling and how it fits into the longterm plans for his acting career.

Noting that once he transitioned to acting, Johnson received lots of conflicting advice on how to handle his career, but in recent years he has built his own team led by his ex-wife Dany.

The new management team led to Johnson "embracing" the Rock name again and returning to WWE. Dany commented that it was a nickname he could never "escape."

Johnson explained that once you strip down pro wrestling to its basics, it's about the interaction with the live audience.

"I'm back for no other reason than to entertain the fans that had been so good to me over the years," Johnson said. "It's not about the dollar. I've been very fortunate. When you go out there and you perform, it becomes really magical. So to be able to go back and create the biggest match of all time for them means the world to me. I took the biggest risk of my life by leaving WWE when I was on top. To be able to go back means the world to me."

The article noted that Johnson struggled with the adjustment of entering another industry as an unproven talent after doing so well with wrestling and had to deal with only being offered action films until "Get Shorty" allowed him to move into family-fare. Once he had shown he could carry such roles, he moved onto more action driven, tentpole type films.

On the film side, Johnson has four films set up after this weekend's Wrestlemania:

*Brett Ratner's "Hercules: The Thracian Wars"
*Michael Bay's "Pain and Gain"
*Dito Montiel's "Empire State"
"Fast & Furious Six."
