BY THE NUMBERS: TAKING A LOOK BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM ROH, TNA, AND WWE

By Richard Trionfo on 2012-03-25 22:48:49
After a week where it looked like we would have wrestling on Raw to build to Wrestlemania, they returned under the twenty minute mark for the fifth time in six weeks. Raw was not the only show to see disappointing totals for the amount of wrestling. The only show to have more than two dozen minutes of wrestling was Smackdown with only twenty-five minutes of wrestling. NXT and Superstars were able to finish tied for third behind Impact while Ring of Honor was able to raise their hand for having more wrestling than Raw.

Until Ring of Honor aired on Saturday evening, the longest match of the week was the eight minute match between Michael McGillicutty and Tyson Kidd on NXT. That was followed by the tag match with Epico and Primo facing Mason Ryan and Alex Riley on Superstars and the tag match on Smackdown that saw Daniel Bryan and Miz face CM Punk and Sheamus. Then we got the two longest matches of the week and the only match that was greater than ten minutes.

With the dearth of long wrestling matches until Saturday night, sixteen of the twenty-eight matches this week were four minutes or less. There were four other matches that went five minutes. More than seventy percent of the matches were less than five minutes. That makes sense because the average match length this week was less than four and a half minutes. That is almost a minute below the average match length over the last one hundred nine weeks.

The total amount of wrestling dropped by fourteen minutes from last week and was the lowest total since January. Going into next week with the Wrestlemania build in its final straightaway and Smackdown from Axxess, it could be a low for the year, even with two main event caliber matches on Ring of Honor.

Next week two shows should pass their next barriers. Impact should hit twenty-eight hundred minutes and close the gap on Raw, which is currently at fifty-six minutes (the gap was one hundred thirty-nine minutes nine weeks ago). NXT should pass fifteen hundred minutes if there is any wrestling on the show.

Smackdown closed the gap on Raw for total matches while passing the six hundred match barrier. Smackdown is now only twenty-four matches behind Raw, cutting the gap from thirty-one matches nine weeks ago.

There have been a total of five hundred fifty-five matches that were either one minute matches or ten minute matches. At this point, exactly sixty percent of those matches (three hundred thirty-three) have been ten minutes or more while exactly forty percent of those matches (two hundred twenty-two) have been one minute in length. The two hour wrestling shows have exactly two hundred of those two hundred twenty-two matches.

The time for the Bully Ray versus Bobby Roode match goes from the bell until James Storm connects with the super kick.

The time for the Teddy Long versus John Laurinaitis match goes from the time that Laurinaitis stops yelling at Randy Orton until the end of the match. The two minutes of stalling/promo by Laurinaitis should not be rewarded to avoid a one minute match.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
