ANOTHER REPORT FROM WWE'S 3/16 SHOW IN MONTREAL

By T.W. on 2012-03-17 13:20:06

After reading the CliffsNotes version of the WWE SuperShow in Montreal.

- The show began with Vicky Guerrero "excusing herself" to the crowd and being literally drowned out in boos. This led to a mostly comedic opener between Santino Marella and Jack Swagger for the US Title which again had great crowd heat due mostly to everyone being extremely into Santino's act. He eventually won via pinfall after the dreaded Cobra.

- The Miz came out next and cut a promo in French, telling everyone that he loved Canada... but hated Quebec. He then made sure to hate on everything dear to the French Canadians (local hockey team, language particulars, etc) before segueing into his usual schtick and delivering the expected tag lines - albeit still in French! A pretty cool Maryse-flavored in-ring moment to rile up the locals, one would think. R-Truth then came out and again the crowd was very much into his act, loudly exclaiming "What's Up" on cue, though there were some Miz fans trying to counter the wave. R-Truth - who was good at remembering the little things, like making sure to open up the ropes for Little Jimmy to get in before he did - ended up winning by pinfall to keep the fans happy.

- Eve Torres then came out and also cut an in-ring promo, pleading for forgiveness and indicating that she would show tonight how important it was for her to set things right with the fans after doing the same with Zack Ryder this past Monday on RAW. Tamina came out to join her and Beth Phoenix and Natalya then made their way to ringside as a tandem. The match was way longer than the usual TV Diva fare and culminated with Tamina attempting to tag Eve in... only for Torres to jump off the apron and pull the classic heel walk-off. A Glam Slam later and Tamina is pinned for the count.

- Chris Jericho was up next - LiteBrite jacket and all - and also decided to cut a promo in the ring. He threw in a French line telling the fans to shut their mouths in the midst of boasting about being the Best In The World At Everything He Does, and then resumed having a pretty good match with Kofi Kingston. Eventually, he teased the Walls Of Jericho, got reversed, caught the Trouble In Paradise kick and went for his finisher one more time, locking it in. Kofi eventually powered out into a pinning combo but Jericho wasn't done; another extended exchange led to the CodeBreaker and pinfall victory for Chris Jericho.

- After Big Time Intros, the Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Title saw Big Show and Randy Orton start off by double-teaming Daniel Bryan, including a couple of "Shhh-chops" from Big Show, and eventually led into Bryan getting a chance to rally when, expectedly, Show got miffed that Orton capitalized on the demolition of the champ to attempt a pinfall. The end game saw Orton come back from ringside to RKO Big Show but then get dumped back out by Bryan, who scored the winning fall. Post-match, as Bryan celebrated excessively, Orton slithered back in and hit another RKO for good measure (and to send the crowd happily into intermission). No sign of AJ.

- Back from the break, Zack Ryder teamed with Mason Ryan - with Hornswoggle, of all people, in their corner! - against Tag Team Champs Primo and Epico, escorted as usual by Rosa Mendes. Finish saw Rosa attempting to distract Ryan despite Hornswoggle hanging off her legs on the apron, eventually succeeding as the champs double-teamed the big guy into a LungBlower and a pinfall.

- A short video commercial for the Last Man Standing Match between John Cena and Kane was shown next, and then the principals made their way to the ring. Quick note: throughout the night, the lack of pyros was admittedly a mild annoyance as it made the whole thing less epic, but they were seriously missed when Kane came down to dramatic music we've been accustomed to associate to explosions... Extreme dueling "Let's Go Cena/Cena sucks" chants lasted through the whole bout, which turned out to be quite short. After some play on the outside including the use of stairs and cornerposts, and a battle of mic shots to the head, Kane resorted to bringing tables into play; Cena went through one (but made it up in time) and then the Big Red Monster got FUed/AAed through another (and did not).

- Vicky came out to switfly introduce Dolph Ziggler, then CM Punk followed shortly thereafter. After another round of Big Time Intros, the best contest of the night took flight. For some reason, both guys took turns spoofing some Ric Flair maneurisms and generally had fun in the ring, despite the solid work that tended to be more serious in tone than some of the earlier contests. Eventually, a ref bump led to Chris Jericho running from the back to interfere and "punk out" the champ (couldn't resist) with a CodeBreaker, which led to a long two-count. Match resumed with some more stiff shots by Punk on Ziggler - and even a solid head kick on Jericho as he tried to interfere again - and eventually a GTS sealed the deal, once again making sure the extra hot crowd went home happy.

- After the conclusion of the show, CM Punk posed with the belt for a while before grabbing a mic to thank the live crowd for their incredible energy in every match of the night. He explained how they already have long weeks as it is and that such a hot crowd made skipping some days off leading up to WrestleMania a real treat. He promised to come back to Montreal ASAP and thanked everyone a final time before bowing out to his music.
