FORMER ECW WORLD CHAMP ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS AND MORE PWS SUPERCARD 2012 NEWS

By Mike Johnson on 2012-03-10 10:57:36
Some news and notes from last night's Pro Wrestling Syndicate "Supercard 2012" event in Rahway, NJ:

*Former ECW World champion Jerry Lynn announced that he will close out his career at the end of 2012. Lynn noted that as he's getting older, it's harder to get his body to do what he wants it to and to rebound properly so he can have a good quality of life, so he's winding down. Lynn is one of the classiest people ever in the business as well as one of the hardest working, so if anyone deserves to go out on their terms, it's him.

*Running Rahway was probably the best thing PWS could have done for themselves as they drew in excess of 650-750 fans, one of their largest crowds to date. Kevin Matthews, one of the bookers, actually pushed to run the venue regularly instead of haphazardly in NYC. Since JAPW hadn't been running there regularly, they finally decided to book the venue and it worked extremely well. They will have regular dates going forward.

Dan Maff, who was injured in his bout with Lynn, was OK after the match. Maff couldn't even pinpoint where he was injured but believes it may have been when Lynn came off the apron at him with a flip dive. Maff at one point couldn't feel his mouth and didn't realize he was even talking at ringside. While there were concerns he had really hurt his back or knee, he was OK after recovering.

*Maff was scheduled to turn heel at the end of the show and join the Reality Check stable but when he got hurt, the promotion slotted Jay Lethal into the slot. That actually worked out well as a shocking moment since Rahway is pretty much Lethal's hometown venue.

*Also turning heel was The Amazing Red, who appeared earlier in the show wearing a Michael Meyers mask. The idea there was to tease it may be Homicide, who wore the mask earlier in his career.

*The number promoter Pat Buck gave out last night for Sid Vicious was indeed his legitimate cell phone.

*The best match on the show from an entertainment standpoint was Tony Nese vs. Alex Reynolds. Just an incredible bout.

*The show was good but lasted way too long. There were absolutely some matches that probably went home too late and ended up anti-climactic because of that. It was a very odd mix of WWE names like the Powers of Pain and well known indy guys as well as younger talents who were breaking into the business. The atmosphere was cool because it was a mix of locals, hardcore fans and families, the latter of whom treated it like a major event.

*They are returning Saturday 5/2 with Bret Hart appearing, plus Teddy Hart vs. Matt Hardy for the first time ever. There are plans to bring a major Japanese name in for June as well.
