BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2012-01-10 11:58:58
It is the first week of 2012 and another week closer to one hundred editions of By the Numbers. The Way Way Way Beyond the Numbers Column looking back at 2011 will be up shortly but with my current schedule and the detail of the column, it is taking longer than I expected.

This week marked the return of the mystery man who turned out to be Chris Jericho and he might have had more time than the longest match on Raw.

After long deliberations, it was decided that the Ring of Honor show will count in the totals for the two full matches that were shown on the broadcast so the two week vacation is over for Ring of Honor.

This was a solid week for television with the average for the week being twenty-five minutes per show. This week’s total was only ten minutes more than last week without Ring of Honor due to four shows near or over thirty minutes. It was one minute less than the last week to have all six shows.

This week was won by Impact for the third straight week and their third straight week over thirty minutes of wrestling. Second place was Smackdown while Ring of Honor with only two matches finished in third. Raw and Superstars were tied for fourth while NXT was in last, two minutes behind Raw and Superstars.

Even though they won the week, TNA did not have one of the three longest matches of the week, but they were within the six to eight minute range for their five matches.

With their strong week of television, Ring of Honor moved back over the twenty-five minute average for the show and the eight minute barrier for average match length. Thanks to the opening match from Ring of Honor, we passed the three hundred match barrier for ten minute matches.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).

One Year Ago in By the Numbers

[Week 46]

One year ago, we started off 2011 with the best week of wrestling from the six shows. There was a total of one hundred eighty minutes, breaking the record set only two weeks earlier. The highest total since this week was in week 89 when there was one hundred sixty-one minutes of wrestling.

Raw and Smackdown accounted for half of the wrestling this week with Smackdown winning the week for the fourth straight week. Raw was only two minutes behind and Ring of Honor was also over thirty minutes. Superstars finished in fourth with Impact fifth and NXT bringing up the rear.

There were a total of seven matches of more than ten minutes with Smackdown having three matches and Raw and Ring of Honor had two each.

The longest match of the week was Edge versus Kane from Smackdown as their feud continued over the World Title. The second longest match came from Raw and featured Sheamus versus Wade Barrett versus Randy Orton proving that the more things change, the more feuds stay the same. The feud between Miz and John Morrison was also intensifying and they gave us the third longest match of the week.

The man of destiny, Alberto Del Rio wrestled R Truth while we saw a six person Divas match with the two people who Ariane would mention to lead to Austin Face on Tough Enough. On NXT, the man who was teased through the last two months of 2011 made an appearance.

On Superstars, two of the men who are currently feuding over the World Title, Mark Henry and Daniel Bryan, were tag team partners against Tyson Kidd and Ted DiBiase.

A year ago, A.J. Styles and Frankie Kazarian were tag team partners, just like they were this week, but the problems that existed at the start of 2012 were not there in 2011.

On Smackdown, Drew McIntyre actually got to wrestle in a match that meant something where he teamed with Dolph Ziggler to face Big Show and Cody Rhodes.
