SCHIAVONE IN THE WWF, DESMOND WOLFE LEAVING TNA, IS WWE IN TROUBLE?

By Mike Johnson on 2012-01-05 10:00:00
Why did Tony Schiavone leave WWF in 1990?

Schiavone's contract was up and the company let him go. He returned to WCW.

I was giving thought to the WWE product over the last 10 years and it appears that this is a company that really makes money in spite of itself. In fact, I think they’ve left so much money on the table that it’s disgusting. We’ve had the terrible Austin heel turn, the failed Invasion angle, the horrible Goldberg run and the resurrection & castration of ECW. More recently the Nexus angle and the Punk-Cena feud. Had these events been handled differently I think they would have made much more money than they did. My question is what will it take for this company to finally wake up and realize it’s in trouble?

If you look at their bottom line, they can make the argument that they aren't in trouble. Now, do they blow storylines? Absolutely. Look at CM Punk earlier this year. But, they have the machine in place and do a great job at marketing, production and promotion, which is why they wll always be the top dog. Things will one day be better creatively, but you can't argue that they are in trouble....yet. Now, what would they consider trouble? Losing the USA Network deal. Their stock dropping $5 a share. Losing 2-3 top stars at once. That's what would scare the hell out of them and force change.

There was a wrestler in Mid-South in the early 80's whose name I can't remember. He was African American and used a variety of submission holds, one of which he bridged over the opponent with the announcers talking about the pressure on the knee. Any idea from that lousy description who he was? They seemed to be building him up but I don't know whatever happened to him.

A number of readers sent word you are likely thinking of Savannah Jack.

Whatever happened to former TNA star Desmond Wolfe? What were the circumstances to him not returning to TNA?

Desmond is back under his old ring name, Nigel McGuinness, in ROH working as the promotion's color commentator and is also working some independent matches. TNA let him go after a medical issue kept McGuinness out of the ring for an extended period.

Have you noticed lately that TNA referees have the words Impact Wrestling on the front and back of their shirts? Unusual. What do you think of that?

Good branding.
