THE IMPORTANCE OF TITLE REIGNS, WHEN YOU SHOULD EXPLAIN WHAT THE BUSINESS REALLY IS TO CHILDREN, STEAMBOAT VS. SAVAGE TRIBUTES

By Mike Johnson on 2011-11-03 10:00:00
I read a lot lately about the value of the titles… or, rather, lack thereof.  In the 90’s, title changes became more frequent and we saw reigns last months instead of years.  I’ve come to wonder if perhaps we long-time fans have become so jaded that we aren’t willing to accept the titles as they are today and blame devaluation instead of the nostalgic sense that perhaps fuels this.  Creative is not great right now but WWE had a creative drought in the mid-90’s that they recovered from nicely and the titles still held meaning.  I only question this because I have a 6 year old son who has gotten into WWE very much in the past year to year and a half.  Whenever I tell him show results he gets very upset if heels win the title.  He constantly asks who the champion is or if, say, John Cena, is the champion.  Conversely, I have a friend who is 28 and recently started watching with her boyfriend.  She has gotten into it intensely came to work and ranted, upset when Alberto Del Rio won the championship.  Is it perhaps the long-time fan being jaded that devalues the title and not the WWE itself?

It's quite possible but the ratings and the buyrates would seem to indicate then that there are a lot of jaded fans not watching or spending their money.

You may have already answered this question from numerous people but I have to ask. I saw an interview on YouTube where bill Goldberg said if he had one last match in wwe it would be if every thing was right and it would be with stone cold, in your opinion what are the chances this would ever happen.

It's never going to happen.

At an early age I was told that wrestling was fake, and grew to understand that it is predetermined and choreographed.  At Wrestlemania this year, an 8-year-old sitting next to me kept giving me angry looks when I cheered Miz against Cena and seemed on the verge of tears after the Awesome win.  With that said, at what age do you think kids should learn the basics of kayfabe?  Do you think that parents have a responsibility to tell kids that the fights aren't real, and that these co-workers aren't really trying to hurt each other?  It hasn't hurt my interest as a fan, and especially with the growth of MMA, it seems as if we are basically fostering bullying, if not encouraging it as well.

I think that's a decision that should be left up to the parent of the child, but I would think that by the time children are eight or nine, they should understand that what is presented on the show is no different than any other movie or play and shouldn't be done in 'real life'.
Savage vs. Steamboat at Wrestlemania III is considered one of the greatest matches of all time.  On one of the WWE documentaries available on NetFlix streaming, I think it is Jericho who talks about having the match memorized, and re-creating it move for move with friends.  Suppose he and C.M. Punk--another huge fan of Savage--recreated the match, move for move, and maybe changed the finish.  At what point do you think you'd realize "this is Savage-Steamboat from WM3?," and would you be upset with the recreation?  The 25th anniversary of that match is this coming year, and I think that would be both a great tribute to Savage and a fantastic match.

I wouldn't be upset, but I'd certainly know what they were going for when George Steele shoved Jericho off the top rope.  Personally, while it's a nice idea in theory, I'd rather see Jericho, Punk or anyone else who gets the chance to have a great match at Wrestlemania get to make their own history instead of paying tribute to someone else's match with a repeat performance.  There are ways to pay tribute to the match without actually performing it.

What's the latest on former WWE Diva/SHIMMER star Serena Deeb? I read where she was suffering from a concussion. She had seen a doctor and was advised to avoid wrestling for awhile. How is she doing? Do you know when the concussion happened? Where? All the best to her at this time. Godspeed.

I haven't heard anything additional beyond what was announced.
