OHIO VALLEY WRESTLING TV TAPING LIVE REPORT FROM LOUISVILLE, KY

By Mike Johnson on 2011-01-20 19:49:51
Greeting from once again snowy Louisville, Kentucky where Ohio Valley Wrestling once again held its weekly television tapings at the Davis arena. The crowd was around 70.

This show was probably most notable for Jim Cornette not appearing, at least not publicly. Not sure if he was in the back or not, but I'd guess not. As a result of no Cornette, this show had more wrestling and less talking than they've been doing lately, but none of the wrestling came off all that important tonight. Not a bad show, but certainly a missable one I'd say. Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin were TV announcers. Ron Hed and Brittany DeVore were the ring announcers.

1. Mohammad Ali Vaez w/Mr. B beat Elvis Pridemore

Dark match. Vaez gave Elvis, no not THAT Elvis, quite a bit here at times, some of Elvis' offense didn't look good, some looked ok. Elvis missed a crossbody off the top rope, and Vaez beat him with his running neckbreaker. This went a bit longer than most OVW opening dark matches. Elvis seemed proud of his effort here after the match, after all his last name is Pridemore....

2. Paredyse w/CJ Lane beat Mitch Johnson

This was the start of the TV taping. These two met in a pretty entertaining dark match last week, so they let them do it on TV this week. I've noticed that OVW does that fairly often, if a dark match sorta works, they're try it again for television. Johnson does a jobber Kurt Angle gimmick, of all things. Like last weeks match, this started with an amateur wrestling challenge, and once again Paredyse didn't fare well with that. Paredyse kneed Johnson from behind to get the advantage. Johnson fired back, however, and starting hitting himself on the head, I guess in an attempt to fire himself up. Johnson then ran head first into the knee of Paredyse, which fired himself out, not up. Paredyse then won the match with a spinning neckbreaker. This was fairly entertaining, but not as good as last weeks dark match, though the matches were similar in how they were laid out.

Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin did an interview in front of the desk with Christopher "The Prince" Bolin, who was there to introduce the first person he was going to manage in Bolin Services 2.0. As I predicted several weeks ago, it was none other than James "Moose" Thomas. Which is good I guess since Thomas doesn't have anything else going on here storyline wise at this time. Bolin said Thomas hasn't been legit beaten. Funny, I've seen him get legit pinned by Flash, and Matt Barela just in the last several weeks. I wonder if that "off and on Glaucoma" that plagues Kenny Bolin is hereditary?

. James "Moose" Thomas w/Christoper Bolin beat Jason Wayne

Like in the Paredyse vs Mitch Johnson match, these two have met before in a dark match a few weeks ago, and they faced each other at the January 8th Saturday Night Special. Wayne is a good sized kid with a good body. His offense looked pretty bad here though. He's super duper green, but I like his potential. The crowd likes him. Christopher Bolin, who was again wearing black gloves, was pretty dressed down. It stands out when a talent doesn't dress up in OVW, because usually they are dressed in suits, or nice dress clothes. The frumpy looking Christoper Bolin stood out looking like a bit of a slob. He didn't really add, or take away, anything from Moose' act in this match, it was the same old Thomas, who won with his Sidewalk slam.

They showed video from last weeks show of Cornette in the ring with former OVW champion Matt Barela, Mike Mondo, and new OVW champion "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton. This angle last week set up last weeks TV main event, which was Compton beating Barela to retain the title after Mondo interfered, and they showed clips of that as well. Compton will now go on to face Mondo at the next Saturday Night Special on February 5th.

4. Benjamin Bray beat "Mr. Media" Cliff Compton w/Mo Green in a non-title match

Yes you read that right. Benny Bray beat the OVW champion Cliff Compton. Both attorney Christian Mascagni and The Paparazzi guy were conspicuous by their absence in Compton's corner tonight. Compton just totally dominated the hapless and hopeless Bray for a little while, and wasn't even taking the match seriously. Kept picking Bray up when he could have beaten him. After much abuse, Bray came back with a dropkick, which knocked Compton into the referee, which knocked the referee out of the ring. That spot looked really good. Compton gave Bray his "Media Blitz" finisher, aka Michinoku Driver, but former champion Matt Barela ran out and gave Compton his reverse standing neckbreaker finisher, and then laid Bray on top of Compton. Mo Green, not seeing this, tossed the ref back in the ring, and he counted Compton out, giving Bray the biggest, albeit tainted, win of his career.

Compton went in front of the desk and cut a promo, first yelling at Mo Green for dropping the ball, but then saying he knows Barela was to blame for this, and again started making racial slurs towards the Hispanic Matt Barela. Compton guaranteed he would still be champion after his Feb. 5th match vs Mike Mondo. I didn't think Compton sold the loss to Bray nearly big enough. He did a little, but he and Green should have been going nuts out there after losing, and it just seemed pretty tepid how Compton handled it.

5. Rudy Switchblade vs Randy Terrez went to a no contest

Terrez took the mic on the floor before the match and cut a bizarre promo on Switchblade, saying stuff like for Switchblade, "Watching all those personal affirmations on Sesame Street as a kid paid off". Terrez said he wasn't the bad guy, but that Switchblade was the bad guy. These two are feuding over a woman Terrez said Switchblade stole from him two years ago in El Paso, Texas. He said Switchblade can never be forgiven, and he will turn the fans against Switchblade, and that Rudy Switchblade will destroy Rudy Switchblade.

Switchblade jumped to the floor and took the mic. Switchblade asked Terrez if he thinks before he speaks. Switchblade said this happened over two years ago, and that Terrez needs to just let it go. Hilariously, to me at least, the fans started chanting "Let it go". Heh. Switchblade said Terrez needs to go back home before he gets hurt, then he socked Terrez in the mouth, and it was on.

These two had a really stiff brawl on the outside for awhile before the ref even rang the bell to start the match. Brutally stiff chops, and both guys being thrown into the side wall with force. They just beat the crap out of each other.

They finally go in the ring, with Switchblade scoring with some kicks. Physical back and forth match here, but for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, once these two get in the ring for a match, the crowd goes almost completely dead. Very silent in the building during this, which is even stranger because the crowd was into the mic work, and the prematch stiff brawl on the outside. It's almost like crowd boredom, but not sure that's the right word for it. Terrez broke out a little Lucha Libre, which is cool, and funny to see in OVW. Terrez knocked Switchblade back to the floor, but while out there, Switchblade catapulted Terrez hard into the ringpost. Terrez seems like a hard guy to hurt though. Back in the ring, both guys started brawling, with both basically ignoring the ref. Switchblade went up for his Frog splash finisher, but Terrez got up and slammed him off the top.

Both guys ended up trading blows on the second rope in the corner, and the ref finally called for the bell, and ruled the match a no contest. I think this is the third time here these guys have gone to a no contest, twice on TV, once at Saturday Night Special. So this thing is far from settled. The postmatch saw both Terrez and Switchblade swing at the ref with a chair. Terrez gave Switchblade a low blow, and then a DDT onto the chair, as the ref filled with more refs trying to restore order.

I do think this time, unlike the first time these guys met, the hatred between the two was rather evident. Match had a strange, macabre type of a vibe to it, maybe that's why the crowd was quiet. No fun to this match, very dark feel to it. Terrez seems like a strange bird, and comes off very macabre in general himself. He has good skills though, sort of a wrestler that grows on me the more I see him.

They showed video from last week of the set up of the newly crowed OVW Southern Tag Team champions Christoper Silvio & Nick Nemeth defending against the former champions, The Elite(Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver). They showed the set up to that match, and clips of the match itself, with Nemeth & Silvio winning to retain the titles.

6. Ryan Nemeth & Christoper "Dynamite" Silvio w/Raphael Constantine beat Jimbo Onoo & Raul Lamotta to retain the OVW Southern Tag Team titles

This was the TV main event. The Elite came out with chairs and joined Hill and Bolin in the booth for this match. Constantine was still walking with a cane, selling the ankle injury the Elite gave him in December. Silvio & Constantine and Silvio are known here as "Fighting Spirit". Nemeth inserted himself into a title match in progress against the Elite on Jan. 8th, when Silvio was taking them both on alone, and Nemeth and Silvio won that match to win the straps.

Onoo & Lamotta are basically high end jobbers in OVW, but as a tag team they keep them just alive enough for matches like this. I don't like them as a team though, they really don't work that well together. Silvio was stinging both Onoo and Lamotta with kicks and what not, but Lamotta got his knees up when Silvio attempted a cannonball. Onoo whipped Lamotta into the corner towards Silvio, but Silvio greeted Lamotta with a superkick. Nemeth came in with his still super green looking offense, but this guy has a superstar look. Nemeth went up top, but mugged for the crowd a bit, and got crotched. Silvio and Onoo went to the floor, and Lamotta lit up Nemeth with some chops in the corner. But Nemeth came back with a top rope crossbody block to get the win and retain the tag titles.

7. "Lowrider" Matt Barela & Alex Silva beat The Elite(McNaler & Revolver)

Dark match. This was announced as being the first time that Barela and Silva have teamed up. Silva with a big kick to the face of Revolver early on. The Elite didn't fare well at all at the start. They came back strong though, with Revolver giving Silva a face plant. Silva missed a running knee to the corner, and The Eilte were all over that. They worked on Silva's left knee for quite awhile, even putting him in the figure four. Silva limped towards his corner, but McNaler stopped him cold with a nice Diamond Cutter. Barela finally came in a ran wild for a bit.

Barela told Silva to go up top, but Silva struggled to get there on his beaten up knee. This led to a miscue between the faces as Silva came off the top as Barela was holding McNaler up, but McNaler moved, and Silva clubbed his partner. The babyfaces won though when Silva gave Relvolver his "Silva Surfer" running knee, albiet a ginger version of it, as Barela gave McNaler his reverse standing neckbreaker finisher. Barela then pinned McNaler to win it. Like I said, not a bad show tonight, but not a "must see" either.
