WWE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CLASSIFYING WRESTLERS AS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS

By Dave Scherer on 2010-09-14 13:14:24

When Linda McMahon announced a run for the US Senate many pundits, including myself, questioned whether her campaign would be worth the scrutiny that it put on the family business, World Wrestling Entertainment.  A further example of this came out today when The Connecticut Post reported that WWE is under investigation by the state of Connecticut into the independent contract classification that the company uses to classify wrestlers and other behind-the-scenes talent.

The paper quoted WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman as saying, "WWE has always complied with the law. Up until this election, WWE has not been fined nor investigated in the past for independent contractor classification. However, curiously the state of Connecticut is currently conducting an audit of WWE's classification of independent contractors. WWE constantly reviews its internal practices and procedures to comply with ever-changing employee laws."

He didn't mention that the company has, in fact, been sued by former WWE wrestlers Scott "Raven" Levy, Chris "Kanyon" Klucsartis and Mike Sanders for the way they classify, and thus pay, employees.
