BEHIND THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE FIRST TWENTY WEEKS OF BY THE NUMBERS

By Richard Trionfo on 2010-07-14 13:26:09
Over the last twenty weeks, I have been checking out the amount of wrestling on the six weekly wrestling shows. Now that I have reached a milestone, I wanted to go behind the numbers and take a look at how we got to the current totals.

Over the twenty weeks, we had 117 shows (there were three weeks when Ring of Honor was pre-empted) and in that time we had a total of 498 matches and 2,539 minutes of wrestling.

Here are the totals for the individual shows:

WWE Raw: 492 Minutes from 110 Matches
Ring of Honor: 406 Minutes from 56 Matches
WWE NXT: 233 Minutes from 53 Matches
WWE Superstars: 393 Minutes from 67 Matches
TNA Impact: 503 Minutes from 113 Matches
WWE Smackdown: 512 Minutes from 99 Matches

Looking at the total wrestling over the seventeen weeks when all six shows aired, there was a range of 52 minutes between the amount of wrestling on the shows. One of the weeks without Ring of Honor was able to give us more wrestling than one of the weeks with a full wrestling slate because of Smackdown’s best week for wrestling.

Most Total Wrestling in a Week
159 Minutes: Week 10 (Includes a 3 Hour Raw with 57 Minutes of Wrestling and Ring of Honor with 30 Minutes of Wrestling [on a one hour show])
152 Minutes: Week 18 (Smackdown with 37 Minutes of Wrestling and Impact with 30 Minutes of Wrestling)
143 Minutes: Week 14 (Smackdown with 36 Minutes of Wrestling and every other show other than NXT was over 22 Minutes)

Least Total Wrestling in a Week
107 Minutes: Week 12 (Impact and Smackdown were the only shows over 20 Minutes)
114 Minutes: Week 1 (Impact and Raw combined did not break 30 minute barrier)
115 Minutes: Week 11 (NXT with only 6 minutes and four shows between 17 and 22 minutes)

Over the twenty weeks, there was one week where two shows shared the honor of having the most wrestling. Here is how they break down by show with the most wrestling that the show had on a single show in parenthesis:
WWE Smackdown: 8 Times (38 minutes in Week 15)
TNA Impact: 5 Times (34 minutes in Week 20)
WWE Raw: 4 Times (57 minutes in Week 10 [3 Hour Episode])
Ring of Honor: 4 Times (34 minutes in Week 2)
WWE Superstars: 0 Times (25 minutes in Week 14)
WWE NXT: 0 Times (20 minutes in Week 4)

Even when shows have the most wrestling, they might not have the most wrestling per hour. The top wrestling times are usually for the two hour shows, and the most wrestling was on one of the three hour Raw specials. Here is a look at the most wrestling per hour. First is a look at the most wrestling on a one hour show and there is a definite pattern. While WWE has two one hour shows with Superstars and NXT, neither of those shows could match Ring of Honor for the amount of wrestling per hour.

Most Wrestling on a One Hour Program
34 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 2
32 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 20
30 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 10
29 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 19
29 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 4

If it wasn’t for the ‘Special Episodes’ of WWE Raw, this category would have had WWE Smackdown holding the top four spots followed by one episode of TNA Impact.

Most Wrestling Per Hour on Program Longer than One Hour
21.5 Minutes: WWE Raw Week 13 (Commercial Free episode)
19 Minutes: WWE Smackdown Week 15
19 Minutes: WWE Raw Week 10 (Three Hour Episode)
18.5 Minutes: WWE Smackdown Week 18
18 Minutes: WWE Smackdown Week 14

While the amount of wrestling on a show is something to consider, it is also necessary to look at the amount of matches on a show and the average length of matches.

Here is a look at how the 498 matches on the 117 shows during the last twenty weeks break down.

Number of Matches on a Show
Four Matches: 29 Times
Three Matches: 28 Times
Five Matches: 23 Times
Six Matches: 17 Times
Two Matches: 11 Times
Seven Matches: 7 Times
Eight Matches: 3 Times
One Match: 1 Time

If you are watching a one hour show, you are probably going to end up seeing three matches on the show (28 of 57 shows) and no more than four matches. If you are watching a two hour show, you are probably going to see five (22 of 60 shows) or six (17 of 60 shows).

Number of Matches by Show

WWE Raw [110 Matches]
Five Matches: 7 Times
Four Matches: 4 Times
Six Matches: 4 Times
Eight Matches: 3 Times (Commercial Free Raw and Two Three Hour Episodes)
Seven Matches: 1 Time

Ring of Honor [56 Matches]
Three Matches: 9 Times
Four Matches: 5 Times
Two Matches: 2 Times
Five Matches: 1 Time

WWE NXT [53 Matches]
Three Matches: 8 Times
Two Matches: 8 Times
Four Matches: 3 Times
One Match: 1 Time

WWE Superstars [67 Matches]
Three Matches: 11 Times
Four Matches: 8 Times
Two Matches: 1 Time

TNA Impact [113 Matches]
Six Matches: 7 Times
Five Matches: 7 Times
Seven Matches: 4 Times
Four Matches: 2 Times

WWE Smackdown [99 Matches]
Five Matches: 8 Times
Six Matches: 6 Times
Four Matches: 5 Times
Three Matches: 1 Time

When you look at the match length, one thing to consider in these calculations is that the time during commercials is not considered. That means that Ring of Honor has a major advantage because they do not have commercial breaks during their matches (and only one commercial break per show). A lot of the long matches on the other shows are usually broken up by a commercial break that might take two to five minutes from the match lengths. The only time that Raw had the most wrestling per match in a week was when they did their commercial free episode, and they only beat Ring of Honor by .05 minutes.

Number of Times Greatest Match Average in a Week
Ring of Honor: 12 Times
WWE Superstars: 4 Times
WWE Smackdown: 2 Times
WWE Raw: 1 Time (Commercial Free Episode)
WWE NXT: 1 Time
TNA Impact: 0 Times

Greatest Match Average by Show
Ring of Honor: 10.67 Minutes (Week 20)
WWE Smackdown: 9.5 Minutes (Week 15)
WWE NXT: 8.5 Minutes (Week 6)
WWE Superstars: 8.5 Minutes (Week 5)
TNA Impact: 8.25 Minutes (Week 9)
WWE Raw: 7.13 Minutes (Week 10)

The individual shows with the longest average matches is another case where Ring of Honor almost sweeps the category. The only non Ring of Honor show to crack the top five is a Smackdown show that only had four matches, but two matches over ten minutes.

Greatest Per Match Average on an Individual Show
10.67 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 20 (19 minute main event [second longest match over last 20 weeks])
10 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 10 (20 minute main event [longest match over the last 20 weeks])
9.67 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 4 (two of the three matches longer than ten minutes)
9.5 Minutes: WWE Smackdown Week 15 (three of the four matches longer than ten minutes)
9 Minutes: Ring of Honor Week 12 (two matches on show)

Each week in my columns, I list the longest matches of the week. Because of the commercial situations, Ring of Honor usually has the longest matches, and they have the two longest matches over the last twenty weeks and two more matches that were knocked out of the top three because of their nineteen minute main event last week. Because some of the shows get shut out of the honor of having a top three match, I wanted to end this column by looking at the longest matches from each brand over the last twenty weeks
