ENDING THE RAW GUEST HOSTS, DINNER WITH WRESTLING'S GREATS, LEGACY'S FUTURE, MARK MADDEN AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2009-12-21 10:00:00

I wonder what future brings to the elements of the Legacy, long and short term.

I think that they will stay as a team for a while, then they will go on and have singles runs at the top of the card. If they don't, I would be shocked.  They are both very talented and have the tools to get ahead.

Should the weekly RAW Celebrity Guest Host concept be retired? As I listened to you and Buck discuss the Slammy award for guest host of the year and how poorly Dennis Miller came across, I wondered if there are another year's worth of interesting people Vince can find to guest host. For every Shaq or Ted Dibiase there seemed to be a Dennis Miller or Jeremy Piven, so to me the concept got mixed reviews at best.

Personally, I think it should be, for a few reasons. The ratings bump that it brought in is pretty much gone now so they can't use that as justification. On top of that, I think that the guest host often kills the continuity of the show. If they get rid of it, maybe they could get Raw back to being a focused show. Well, I can hope anyway.

Something I always liked as a conversation question-----if you could sit down for dinner with any three people in history, who would they be? So if you had that choice as a wrestling question, who would it be? I would choose the Sandman, Jim Cornette and one of the heroes of my youth, the Crusher.

I have talked extensively with both Cornette and Sandman and I can tell you they would be great to have a conversation with. Both are very smart and have a passion for the business. I would probably take Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper. The three of them exchanging barbs at each other would make for a really fun evening.

With the talk of WWE scrapping the ECW brand and reinventing their Tuesday Night show on SyFy, don't you think it sounds ridiculously illogical to make it a show about "up and comers" when their main concern was their low ratings? If they're sitting idle at a 1.0 with some star power (Kane, Christian, Shelton), don't you see that dropping further when the star power is removed?

Yes, I really do, especially when you consider that ECW is pretty much already that exact show. I think that the issue is more about how much SyFy is willing to pay WWE for the product that they deliver. It seems to me like SyFy has grown tired of paying WWE for the show as if it does a 2 when of course they are lucky if it does a 1. It sounds like that the "change" on WWE's part is in response to getting less money for the show. If SyFy was still willing to pay more money, I think WWE would feel differently.  But WWE has no one to blame but themselves as they have killed their Tuesday night show with their own decisions.

I read the news item last week about Mark Madden and TNA. It made me wonder what you thought of him as a commentator and as a person.

As a commentator, I think that he was really good when he first started with WCW. Then, he started to believe his hype and his work slid. I think that is a function of his personality, as he is loud and braggadocios. I have talked with Madden on many occasions and I think that when he is in "normal" mode, he's a good guy and entertaining. When he is in "bluster" mode, well let's just say that I don't find him to be good or entertaining. But, he has found a way to make his schtick work in radio as he has made a lot of money as a drive time guy. Of course, he has also hurt his cause at times making statements that got him heat from his bosses. I just think that overall, where wrestling is concerned he is not worth the baggage that he brings with him.
