JEFF PETERSON MEMORIAL CUP NIGHT ONE REPORT

Last Friday night, Full Impact Pro Wrestling presented the first night of the Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup, an annual tournament that pays tribute to Jeff Peterson, a Florida wrestler who died of cancer in 2002. This tournament has taken place every year since 2003 and has seen a who’s who of wrestlers compete in the tournament including Homicide, CM Punk, and Colt Cabana. The winners of the tournament have been: Reckless Youth (2003), Justice (2004), Chris Sabin (2005), Milano Collection AT (2006), Chris Hero (2007), and Erick Stevens (2008).

This year’s tournament had a different format than prior years with four companies providing the talent for this year’s event. The four companies are Hybrid Wrestling, Combat Zone Wrestling, AAW, and Full Impact Pro. Representing Hybrid Wrestling is Hybrid Champion Dave Cole, Flip Kendrick, Louis Lyndon, and Marion Fontaine. Representing Combat Zone Wrestling is CZW Champion Drake Younger, Egotistico Fantastico, Scotty Vortekz, and Jon Moxley. Representing AAW is AAW Heritage Champion Arik Cannon, Johnny Gargano, Shane Hollister, and Silas Young. Representing Full Impact Pro is FIP World Heavyweight Champion Davey Richards, FIP Florida Heritage Champion Brad Attitude, TJ Perkins, and Chris Jones.

Here are some of the stories coming out of the first night of the tournament.

Pro Wrestling Riot returns and crowns new Tag Team Champions

Pro Wrestling Riot returned to action on Friday night with a special pre show for the people who purchased the VIP package for the two night tournament. In addition to the special pre show matches, there was a Tag Team Rumble on Friday night during the main show where nine teams tried to become the new tag team champions. In the end, the Heartbreak Express thought that they had added another title to their impressive career resumes after the British Lions were eliminated, but while Sean Davis was celebrating with Amy Vitale, Ray Beez and Milo Beasley returned to the ring to eliminate Phil Davis to become the new Pro Wrestling Riot Tag Team Champions.

Here are the results from the show.

On the Pro Wrestling Riot VIP Pre Show Card

Match Number One: Tony Kozina defeated QT Marshall

Marshall’s arrogance was evident early in the match as tried to use his size advantage to intimidate Kozina, but Kozina was not going to retreat. Marshall gets the first near fall of the match with a running power slam and then they go back and forth with Marshall using power moves while Kozina uses some aerial maneuvers to work over Marshall. Kozina gets a series of near falls and then after countering a power bomb attempt, Kozina gets the three count with a sunset flip.

Match Number Two: Kahagas defeated Leon Scott

Kahagas started things off with an attack before the bell rang and the action went to the floor after the referee took Kahagas’ kendo stick before he could use it. Kahagas tries to use a chair but Scott moves out of the way and the chair hits the ring post. When the action returns to the ring, Kahagas gets the victory with a Michinoku Driver.

Match Number Three: Craig Classic defeated Jaison Moore

The problems between these two competitors that existed during the Road to Gold Tournament appear to remain since Classic refuses a handshake from Moore at the start of the match. Classic works over Moore with suplexes and kicks before resorting to some nefarious means to maintain control. Classic misses a diving head butt and that gives Moore a chance to take control of the match after a cannonball into the corner and a Samoan drop. Classic escapes an Air Raid Crash attempt and he gets the win with the Sliding D.

Match Number Four: Erick Stevens defeated Kyle O’Reilly

Stevens starts off the match showing little respect for O’Reilly but O’Reilly does not back down from Stevens. Stevens regains control after tripping O’Reilly on the apron. Stevens works on the midsection but he cannot get O’Reilly to submit. O’Reilly fights back and gets a few near falls on Stevens, but Stevens is able to get the victory after a lariat and the Doctor Bomb.

Match Number Five: Bruce Santee defeated Francisco Ciatso with Ron Niemi to retain the Pro Wrestling Riot Heavyweight Title

Santee takes control at the start of the match but Ciatso claims that Santee pulled his hair. Santee decides to show Ciatso how he pulls someone’s hair. Santee is in control until Niemi gets involved while the referee deals with Ciatso. Ciatso misses a splash from the turnbuckles and then Santee hits the Big Dump for the victory.

The show starts off with Jonathan Gold discussing the history of the Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup and then he brings out Milo Beasley to talk about Jeff Peterson and the impact of his life on his career and the tournament. The participants in the tournament are introduced and at the end Davey Richards and Silas Young have some words.

Match Number One: Louis Lyndon (Hybrid) defeated Marion Fontaine (Hybrid) in a first round tournament match in Block D

Fontaine starts off by bragging about his facial hair and then they exchange a series of arm drags. The battle moves to the floor but Lyndon misses a pescado. Fontaine gets a near fall but he complains about an alleged slow count. Lyndon, who focuses on a martial arts based attack, misses a spin kick but Fontaine does not miss a forearm and then he hits a senton splash for a near fall. Fontaine continues to work over Lyndon and gets a near fall after a frog splash. Fontaine is sent to the floor and Lyndon hits a tope suicida. They return to the ring and Lyndon gets the three count after a thrust kick.

Match Number Two: Johnny Gargano (AAW) defeated Chris Jones (FIP) in a first round tournament match in Block D

Gargano and Jones go back and forth as the match starts and neither man can gain an advantage. Jones sends Gargano to the floor but he returns to the ring before Jones can connect on a pescado. Gargano hits a spear from the apron and then he continues to work over Jones. Gargano takes too much time going to the top turnbuckle and that allows Jones to take control of the match. Jones tries for a moonsault but Gargano catches him. Jones is able to counter into a DDT. Gargano tries for a sunset flip power bomb but Jones holds on to the ropes. Jones tries for a corkscrew moonsault but Gargano moves out of the way and he gets the three count with a rollup and a handful of Jones’ tights.

Match Number Three: Silas Young (AAW) defeated Dave Cole (Hybrid) in a first round tournament match in Block C

Young and Cole start off the match trying to find a weakness in their opponent and they each have a series of reversals but neither man is able to do so. Cole is able to work on Young’s ribs with an inverted suplex onto the ropes and a series of Irish whips into the turnbuckles. Young fights back and gets a near fall after a back breaker of his own. Cole gets a near fall after a drop kick when Young comes off the turnbuckles. Cole with a Tiger Driver for a near fall and then he tries for a super Tiger Driver, but Young with a back body drop. Young hits a fireman’s carry slam and then he goes to the turnbuckles for a headstand into an Arabian Press for the three count.

Match Number Four: Jon Moxley (CZW) defeated Brad Attitude (FIP) in a first round tournament match in Block C

The momentum of the match shifts into Moxley’s favor when Attitude misses a charge into the corner and hits the ring post. Moxley works on Brad’s arm and shoulder and when the action goes to the floor, Attitude is sent shoulder first into the ring post. Attitude is able to fight back and he hits a number of high impact moves including a pescado and a hesitation slingshot senton. Moxley misses an elbow from the top turnbuckle but Attitude cannot capitalize and can only get a near fall after a cross body. Moxley returns to the shoulder and he tries to get Attitude into the cross face chicken wing and after a few tries, he is able to lock it in and Attitude taps.

Match Number Five: Bumz R Us (Ray Beez and Milo Beasley) win the Tag Team Rumble to win the Pro Wrestling Riot Tag Team Titles in a Non Tournament Match

This match featured the following teams [in order of entry]: 2 Fast 2 Furious (Nooie Lee and Jerrelle Clark), Tony Kozina and Kyle O’Reilly, The James Boys, Dark City Fight Club (Jon Davis and Kory Chavis), Bumz R Us, The Shane Twins, The British Lions (Chris Gray and Tommy Taylor), The Loggers (Dagon and Jack Manley), and the Heartbreak Express (Sean and Phil Davis with Amy Vitale).

The order of elimination was as follows: Tony Kozina and Kyle O’Reilly, The James Boys, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Shane Twins, Dark City Fight Club, The Loggers, The British Lions, and The Heartbreak Express.

O’Reilly and Kozina work well together and hit a number of double team maneuvers including a Hart Attack. When the James Boys enter, they are worked over by the other two teams. The Dark City Fight Club enters the match and they take care of all three teams that entered before them. They wait for the Bumz to enter the match and they work over Beez and Beasley, but that stops when the Shanes enter the match and they renew their feud and the Bumz are thrown aside so the Shanes and Dark City can battle. The British Lions battle with the Loggers while the Shanes and Dark City Fight Club get eliminated. The Loggers go back and forth between the British Lions and the Heartbreak Express with Manley giving Phil Davis an Acid Drop. The British Lions eliminate the Loggers and the Heartbreak Express think that there are only two teams left in the match.

Sean Davis tells the Lions to eliminate themselves so the Heartbreak Express can win the tag titles. Gray looks like he is willing to do that but Taylor is not on the same page. Sean Davis slaps Taylor and Taylor slaps Sean back. Sean pushes Taylor into Chris Gray who is on the apron and the British Lions are eliminated. The Heartbreak Express start to celebrate. While this celebration is taking place, the Bumz return to the ring and they eliminate Phil Davis for the win.

Match Number Six: Shane Hollister (AAW) defeated Flip Kendrick (Hybrid) in a first round tournament match in Block B

Hollister and Kendrick go back and forth with some mat wrestling at the start of the match. Kendrick hits a few aerial moves including a springboard drop kick and rana. Hollister fights back with a series of kicks. Kendrick gets a near fall after a package spike DDT but Hollister hits a Yakuza kick. Kendrick hits a corkscrew Asai moonsault. After going back and forth, Kendrick hits a Phoenix Splash but Hollister gets his foot on the ropes. Hollister gets the three count after a downward spiral and a kick.

Match Number Seven: TJ Perkins (FIP) defeated Arik Cannon (AAW) in a first round tournament match in Block B

They shake hands at the start of the match, but Cannon’s attempt to show sportsmanship was just a way to sneak attack Perkins. Perkins gets a series of near falls after hitting a sunset flip and rana. The action moves to the floor and Cannon sends Perkins into the ring post, but Cannon misses with a chop and hits the ring post. Cannon is able to recover and he takes over after a delayed vertical suplex. Perkins tries for a rana but Cannon catches him and sends Perkins into the turnbuckles. Perkins hits a neck breaker and thinks that he won the match but the referee realizes that Cannon’s foot was on the ropes and the match continues. Cannon hits a corkscrew suplex but he misses the Glimmering Warlock, allowing Perkins to get the win with a Cloverleaf when Cannon taps.

Match Number Eight: Egotistico Fantastico (CZW) defeated Scotty Vortekz (CZW) in a first round tournament match in Block A

Vortekz tries for the first high impact move in the match but he is kicked when he tries for a suicide dive. They fight into the crowd and Fantastico puts on his cape and hits a dive onto Vortekz in the crowd. When the action returns to the ring, each man has chances to win the match but they are unable to finish the job. Fantastico tries to get Vortekz to submit to a surfboard and then he rolls Vortekz around the ring. Vortekz hits a version of Spanish Fly but he can only get a two count. Fantastico hits the Taco Bender for the three count.

Match Number Nine: Davey Richards (FIP) defeated Drake Younger (CZW) in a first round tournament match in Block A

The match starts off with each man countering the other’s moves and they go to a stalemate. Richards works on the arm while Younger works on the ankle, but Richards starts to work on the leg as well. Richards goes to the floor but he is met with a cannonball from the apron by Younger. Younger appears to injure his knee and Richards starts to focus on that appendage. Richards applies an Indian Death Lock and continues to work on the knee but Younger is able to get to the ropes. Richards applies the Cloverleaf but Younger gets to the ropes. Younger gets a number of near falls after a dragon suplex and a Death Valley Driver. They fight on the turnbuckles and Richards hits a superplex but he can only get a near fall. Richards tries to use his variety of kicks to wear down Younger and set him up for the Cloverleaf. Younger hits a Death Valley Driver from the turnbuckles, but he can only get a two count. Richards hits the DR Driver but he can only get a two count. Richards applies the Cloverleaf again and Younger is unable to get to the ropes because Richards pulled him into the center of the ring and Younger taps.
