WWE'S DIRECTION, SHANE VS. STEPH, SHARPTON ON RAW, STING VS. HBK AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2009-10-05 10:00:00

The Rev. Al Sharpton is going to be the guest host of RAW??? I do not understand that at all!! Instead of Al Sharpton, Why don't they just bring back Brother Love for one night to be the guest host of Raw?? I think it would work. What are your thoughts on this?

I think it was a bad choice by WWE.  They think it makes sense to get a buzz in the media for the show but Sharpton is a polarizing figure that alienates some of their viewers.  I don't see the point in putting something on the show that would make some of their fans tune out.  Brother Love?  Well, he wouldn't get anyone to tune in but he wouldn't get them to tune out either.

I've always wondered why Shane McMahon's role is so much more limited in so far as creative control and direction and why Daddy Mac authors more power and influence to Princess Steph? In my opinion, this is a shame for WWE fans as I see Shane more willing to try new things and take chances (i.e. lobbying to maintain the old-school feel of the original ECW when it relaunched). Will this ever change?

Ever?  Beats me.  But Shane had ample time to make himself part of the creative process before his sister came into WWE and never did so.  As best as I can tell, Shane is more like his mother and his aptitude is more towards the organizational/management part of the business while Stephanie is more like her father.

I know I’m asking this of the wrong people; “preaching to the choir”, if you will, but here goes: What exactly is the WWE is trying to accomplish by catering to a “PG” audience? I’ve heard it said that they’re trying to return to the glory days of Hulkamania, but Today’s Faces (Cena) and Heels (Orton, mostly) don’t quite fit the roles popularized during that era. Plus, in the “you can never go back” tradition, 2009 is a different time (both in society and wrestling) than 1984. Fans haven’t simply cheered the faces and booed the heels since the dawn of the SCSA era; characters are more complex than they were, and the fans reactions to them are as well. I think it will always be that way from now on (wasn’t Edge getting cheered before his injury?)

I agree with what you said, across the board.  I think WWE just looks at it like if they can attract kids to the program now, they will grow up being fans and stay that way into adulthood, like they did in the 80s.  But as you said, John Cena is no Hulk Hogan, plus times have changed in a big way, so I just don't even see them making the plan work.  Things are definitely different today from what they were 25 years ago.  I think they will bring in more kids, but when they get older they will smarten up and realize Cena is no Hogan, thus the loyalty will not be there for him.

It has gotten to the point that whenever I see both Legacy & DX on the same screen, I change the channel. I just don't get it. They have scrawny little Cody Rhodes beating the tar out of HHH. HHH who has beaten (and been beaten by) some of the biggest names in the business, gets put away by Cody Rhodes? It just doesn't do it for me, and it makes HHH & Shawn look very weak, and very old, and makes it look like they both need to call it a day. But I don't think that is what WWE is thinking. So what gives? What do you think?

I think you are missing the big picture.  The only way that the business will continue on is if older guys make younger guys.  DX is doing what they should be doing in order to make young guys.  I think you are missing the fact that at one time, Shawn Michaels and HHH were young guys breaking in and they needed big names to put them over and make them better.

What are the chances that we will ever see a HBK vs. Sting match?

I don't see Sting ever coming to work in WWE so I would say that they are minimal and probably non-existent.
