AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2024-04-17 22:00:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming to us from Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, IN. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone.

We start with the new IWGP World Champion Jon Moxley coming to the ring and the crowd is hyped to see him. He says people used to tell him what he can and can't do and he has a simple message for them: Kiss my ass and watch me. He says that he has put in years and tons of work to win the title he carries and gives a rah rah speech about himself and AEW.

He then says that while there are talented people who are in the Don Callis family, he is a creep. When they put a target on the Blackpool Combat Club, they put a target on him and he’ll be here all night. He could take them out at any time and he’s going to pick out Powerhouse Hobbs and challenge him to a match next week. And when he accepts, Hobbs will learn that he has no chance.

In the back, Mercedes Mone says someone attacked her in the dark and she’s ready to pay back whoever attacked her. She blames Julia Hart. Or it’s someone who wants her to THINK it was Julia Hart. She will watch tonight’s mixed tag match and there is a price to pay when you mess with Mone.

Adam Copeland and Willow Nightingale vs Brody King and Julia Hart.

In the back after Adam comes to the ring, Willow has been attacked, Kris Statlander and Stokely Hathaway are checking on her.

The lights go out and when they come back on, King attacks Adam from behind and beats him up all around the ringside area. Adam crawls into the ring and bell rings as we go to picture in picture. When we return to full screen, Adam recovers enough to fight King, and then gets a series of unanswered attacks in the corner. When Adam goes for his spear, King clotheslines him. King misses a cannonball in the corner and both men are down.

Willow heads to the ring with Kris and Stokely behind her. She gets tagged in and spears King. Adam spears King and Hart refuses to tag in. Hart then attacks Willow from behind with a chain around her fist and grabs Hartless and the Ref calls the match since Willow is out.

Winners: Brody King and Julia Hart.

After the match Mone comes to the ring with a chair and runs off Julia Hart. When Willow is up, Mone drops the chair and they lock eyes in the ring.

In the back, Renee Paquette is with Samoa Joe and Joe says he used to view Swerve as a possible good opponent, but now he sees Swerve keeps getting up when he is knocked down, which makes him more of a nuisance. He says Swerve is a choke artist and he will remain champion at Dynasty.

We start a video package for the Tag Team Title match but the Young Bucks cut it off and say there’s not enough time for it and hype their match which is next.

Matthew and Nickolas Jackson, and Kazuchika Okada vs Penta, Daniel Garcia, and Pac

We think we are going to get Okada and Pac before their match on Sunday, but instead, the Bucks attack him and Okada tags out. The story of the match quickly becomes Pac’s team dominates until someone on Okada’s team cheats to get the advantage back. We then come back from a commercial break, Matthew is doing commentary on the match he’s in to mock Garcia, who is able to take down Matthew and tag in Pac.

We do finally get Okada and Pac in the ring at the same time, but it’s after Matthew attacks Pac from behind and Okada’s team works Pac over before Okada works by himself in the ring. Pac has to tag in Penta, who gets to clean house. Any time we get to see Pac go after Okada, the Bucks interfere. Okada gets piledrivers on Garcia, then Penta, and then Okada gets a Rainmaker for the pin and the win.

Winners: Matthew and Nicholas Jackson, and Kazuchika Okada

This was a match to build heat for the pay per view and the crowd hates the Bucks.

The Bucks bring a ladder into the ring and they use it to beat down Garcia after the match.

Chris Jericho comes to the ring to talk with Taz. It’s then time for Hook to come to the ring. Taz says he’s here to make sure things go nice and easy. Jericho tells his side of the story and his ego completely takes over. He asked if Hook wants to sit under the Big Branches of the Learning Tree.

Hook says no.

Jericho tries to change Hook’s mind and gets in Taz’s face while doing it. He says that Hook is not as good as he thinks he is. Jericho shoves Taz and Taz goes down. This causes Hook to step up. Hook grabs him and says he will show Jericho how good he is anywhere, any time. He tells Jericho to get out of his ring. Jericho slowly leaves the ring.

We then get Renee with Swerve Strickland. He says Joe is wrong about him, and all year, he’s had people beat him down and he’s gotten back up and is still here. He always gets back up and never gives up. Joe can call him whatever he wants, but after Sunday, they will call him the new world champion. He then takes off the microphone and jacket and says he will tell Joe about it tonight in the ring.

Mariah May w/Toni Storm and Luther vs Deonna Purrazzo

One thing I do like is that they didn’t have Purrazzo vanish after losing to Storm. Having more than just one person going for the title and stories other than “Who will be next to face the champ” is something the women’s division needs. The match is OK, and Purrazzo is able to get the win against May with a surprise rollup for the pin and the win.

Winner: Deonna Purrazzo

After the match, Storm attacks Purrazzo, but Thunder Rose runs to the ring to take out Storm. Then, Rose and Purrazzo get in each other’s faces. May attacks Purrazzo, and Storm tries to attack Rosa, but Rosa fights her off, and then smears makeup all over her face.

Renee is now with Jay White and the Gunns, and they challenge the Acclaimed for the AEW Trios championship, winner take all at Dynasty.

In the next segment, The Acclaimed accept.  They then challenge for Acclaimed vs Thee Gunns on Collision.

Orange Cassidy vs Shane Tayor w/Anthony Ogogo and Lee Moriarty

The announcers make a point of letting us know that Cassidy is on his own tonight.

Cassidy starts with drop kicks and other moves until Taylor gets a stalling vertical and then gets a heat seeker from the trop rope. When Cassidy rolls out of the ring, Moritaty stomps down Cassidy before the commercial break, and Cassidy gets to fire up when they return from commercial with Cassidy taking all three members of Taylor’s group out until Taylor cuts him off. Cassidy is able to get an Orange Punch for the pin and the win.

Winner: Orange Cassidy

After the match, Moriarty holds Cassidy for Ogogo to drop him with a single punch.

Matt Sydal and Christopher Daniels come to the ring to help Cassidy, but Trent Beretta takes them out with a steel chair. Beretta is still wearing the homemade shirt from their tag team match two weeks ago. Taylor and his team go back to beating down Cassidy as Beretta backs up the ramp.

Will Ospreay vs. Claudio Castagnoli

Don Callis joins commentary.

This is a solid, hard hitting match and the crowd is cheering for both men as they show just how strong they are. Both of these guys are masters in the ring, and it’s a shame they are only getting about 10 to 15 minutes for their match because it would work much better if they had a longer time. This is also the first match since Ospreay came into AEW where he is not dominating.  Even Callis says that Claudio is ahead on points as they move into the final third of the match.

They do a lot of near falls and reversals and Ospreay is NOT dominating as he has in the past. Claudio looks strong without having Ospreay look weak. Ospreay gets a Spanish Fly on Claudio, which shows a lot of strength by both men. Ospreay is able to counter the Big Swing by pulling himself up as the swing starts. Ospreay gets a huddle blade for the pin and the win.

Winner: Will Ospreay

Callis, Hobbs and Takeshita hit the ring after the match, but Osperay leaves the ring and does not get involved. Mox shows up as Callis runs off.  Ospreay stays outside the ring and looks like he is telling the Callis family to stop. Mox tosses the Family from the ring and Opreasy keeps Hobbs and Fletcher from getting in the ring.

After a rundown of the Dynasty card, Swerve Strickland and Prince Nana come to the ring. Swerve talks about how he saw that Joe was scared last week and he’s waiting for Joe to come to the ring.

Joe obliges him. Security is trying to hold him back and they stop at ringside. Swerve leaps from the top into the security and goes face to face with Joe.  They start throwing hands and Joe tosses him into the steel steps and then into the ring. As Joe is stalking Nana, Swerved attacks him and they fight back and forth. Joe hits a muscle buster and grabs his belt. He stands over Swerve and holds the belt as we are out of time.
