AWESOME KONG VS. DEONNA PURRAZZO: 8/20 WWR 'THE SHOW MUST GO ON' LIVE REPORT

By Paul Crockett on 2017-08-20 17:24:00

Women’s Wrestling Revolution “The Show Must Go On”

Providence, Rhode Island

August 20, 2017

It’s the return of Awesome Kong as she takes on Deonna Purrazzo in the main event.  It should be a very interesting clash of styles, but with both being fantastic professionals, it should be a tremendous main event.

MATCH ONE: Allie Recks v. Nadi

Nadi, who was announced from “South Central Armenia,” had no issues playing heel and seemed very confident in the role.  Almost immediately, she got the heat on Recks.  She was very mean to the referee, but in an interesting way.  The ref would tell her not to pull Allie’s hair and she replied, “I’m fixing it.  It’s ugly.” Really well done.

Nadi was attempting a suplex, but Recks reversed it with a suplex/DDT combo for the win. Fun opener.

WINNER: Allie Recks

MATCH TWO: Davienne (with Sammi Lane) v. Maria Manic (w/ Penelope Ford)

Davienne jumped Manic before the bell and we’re off.  As Lane preoccupied the referee, Ford came off the top on Davienne with a cross body block. Davienne recovered and got the heat on Manic, throwing hard shots and solid offense.

Occasionally, the ref would be distracted and Lane would throw a choke at Manic.  The crowd was reacting beautifully to it, too.  Davienne did an excellent job in building the heat, and she is clearly very comfortable in the overbearing heel role and was fantastic doing it.

A testament to Davienne’s work as a hell was how electric the crowd became during Manic’s comeback.  They were going wild.  They went back and forth until Manic hit an F-5 variation for the win and the crowd went ballistic.  Excellent match.

WINNER: Maria Manic

MATCH THREE: Skylar v. Terra Calaway

Calaway is called “The Queen of the Dinosaurs” and walked out with some sort of dinosaur fossil on her head.  That was interesting.

Calaway said she wanted to make it fair and went down on her knees to play up the size discrepancy.  Nice little move to establish the heel/babyface role.

After an initial flurry, Calaway got Skylar down and started to work her over.  Skylar was good in the babyface in peril role while Calaway seemed very comfortable playing the heel.  Skylar made a comeback and got a nearfall on a Thesz press from the second rope.  Couple of nearfalls near the end.  Skylar went for a big boot but missed.  Calaway hit one of her own, followed by a full nelson slam for the win.  Good match.

WINNER: Tara Calaway

MATCH FOUR: Vanity v. Willow Nightingale

Lots of back and forth action between the two and that was the theme of the match, which was a nice change of pace from the more classic heel/babyface dynamic of the previous matches.  They went to trading nearfalls fairly quickly.  Lots of Irish Whipping in this one.

They went to the floor and Willow posted Vanity private parts first into the post, which got a big reaction.  Willow with a big moonsault from the second rope for the win.  Another fun match.

WINNER: Willow Nightingale

MATCH FIVE: SHINE Nova Championship – Priscilla Kelly (c) v. Jordynne Grace

Very good technical chain work at the beginning of the match as they had a feeling out process on the mat.  Grace quickly went to her signature power-based offense to keep Kelly at bay.  Grace was going for a bearhug when Kelly actually licked her face to distract her and get out of it.  Her character regularly uses suggestive mind games to gain an advantage, so that wasn’t out of the ordinary.

Kelly was able to get the heat on Grace and threw some impressive strikes, including a couple of loud chops.  She’s clearly very confident in the ring and in that role.  The same goes for Grace.  Given they’re both in their very early 20’s, it’s really interesting to see just how much better they will be in a few years (and they’re already both really good to begin with).

Jordynne with a comeback and that was full of fire and really tremendous in its intensity and execution.  She hit a great Muscle Buster for a nearfall.  Kelly ended up responding with an outstanding lariat that almost was an STO in its follow through for a nearfall.  Jordynne with a cradle Michinoku Driver for a two count.

They traded some more nearfalls until Kelly hit a half nelson German, a side Russian legsweep, followed by a Koji Clutch for a submission.  Outstanding match.  Excellent storytelling.

WINNER: Priscilla Kelly

INTERMISSION

MATCH SIX: The Sea Stars (Delmi Exo & Ashley Vox) v. Team Adams (Tasha Steelz & Karen Q)

The Sea Stars said their entrance was so long that they were thirsty, so they asked for shots.  The bartender came from the bar with four shots.  They went to drink but Team Adams jumped them and the match was on.

Karen and Tasha were doing quick tags and cut the ring off on Vox.  They were doing a lot of taunting and were really solid in the heel team role.  They did really well building to Ashley’s hot tag.  They went back and forth before Taeler Hendrix and Alexxis jumped on the apron the distract the Sea Stars.  That allowed Steelz to roll up Delmi for the win.  Good match.  Karen and Steelz worked really well together as a team.

WINNERS: Team Adams

MATCH SEVEN: Gabi Castrovinci v. Sonya Strong

They ended up going to the floor and trading hard chops.  Sonya was in more of the heel role, allowing Gabi to sell while she used hard chops and submissions to build up the heat.  The only issue is that Sonya has had a decent following within the Beyond community, so she was getting good reactions for her offense.  She was still very good in the role, however.

Gabi fired up for her comeback and had some nice offense, including a tilt-a-whirl into a side Russian for a nearfall.  They traded offense from there until Sonya hit a really good STO for the finish.  Good job by both in this one.

Strong cut a promo saying she doesn’t like to talk, but she’s offended she had to start from the bottom again.  She said she’s going to the top, but first, she’s still got one person to get payback on and that’s Veda Scott.  She then cut a promo on Deonna Purrazzo, who happened to be walking by, saying she’s only on top because she has a wrestling boyfriend.  This was a hell of a promo.

WINNER: Sonya Strong

MATCH EIGHT: Alexxis & Taeler Hendrix v. Twisted Sisterz (Thunder Rosa & Holidead)

Extended feeling out process, which was very enjoyable.  Alexxis and Thunder Rosa went at it, followed by Taeler and Holiedead.  They really let their characters go on display, in addition to some by-the-book wrestling.  Well done.

From there, it turned into a bit of a slugfest, with all four women holding their own.  Lots of chops and forearms.  Alexxis and Taeler worked over Rosa to get the heat.  Nice double team moves by them.  Rosa went for a comeback a couple of times but would get cut off.  Nice work by her as well.  Rosa finally got the hot tag off a great comeback and the crowd loved it.

Turned into a bit of a schmoz toward the end.  A couple of wild dives from the ropes to the floor for big reactions.  Back in the ring, the Sisterz went for a double team finish, but Alexis dumped Rosa off the top rope.  Alexxis went up top, but the Sea Stars came out to return the favor and distracted her and tossed her from the top.  That allowed the Sisterz to hit a double team Codebreaker for the win.  Very cool match.

WINNERS: Twisted Sisterz

MAIN EVENT: Deonna Purrazzo v. Awesome Kong

Kong with the early overpowering.  The story became the size and strength of Kong against the technical prowess and submissions of Deonna.

Kong took her time picking Deonna apart, using bearhugs, and various other clutches to wear her down.  She would also throw in big strikes.  Occasionally, Deonna would fire back with forearms, but that would just get Kong mad and she would immediately comeback and toss Deonna to the ground.

Deonna finally floored Kong with a big boot and the crowd popped.  She went for an armbar, but Kong broke out of it with power.  Kong kept building the heat from there.  She hit a big double underhook faceslam, but Deonna got her leg on the rope.  She went for a big two-handed chokeslam, but Deonna slipped out and brought Kong to the mat with the armbar and got the win to a huge ovation.  Really well done, simple but awesome storytelling and execution.  Fantastic main event.  After the match, Kong teased hitting her but raised her hand instead.

Deonna took the mic after the match and responded to Sonya’s promo, where she accused Deonna of getting ahead because of her boyfriend.  She said Marty didn’t win that match, she did.  She said she got to where she has because of her hard work and travelling the world and facing the best.  She said all of that made her not want to be a diva, she wants to be a women’s wrestler.  She said she beat a legend tonight and it will push her further.  She thanked the fans and said how thankful she was.  A very emotional and outstanding promo from Deonna.

WINNER: Deonna Purrazzo

From top to bottom, this was really enjoyable.  All the women worked very hard and they delivered a hell of a show.
