Sports Betting Guide - Advice for Beginners & Advanced Punters

Betting has always seemed quite difficult for some people. They think about placing bets and are left wondering where to start. How do you determine whom to bet on? Do you just choose a team randomly? Are there ways to determine which team could win? And how come the amounts punters win differ from time to time?  And how do bookmakers make profits?

You will not always win your stakes. Betting means that you will lose some and gain some. The only thing is to ensure that, perhaps, you win more times than you lose.

What is Betting?

Perhaps we should start with the basics of what betting is. Betting is when you give money to a bookmaker or a gambling establishment to hold. If the deal to which you have given the money goes your way, then you keep your money and some more from the establishment. If the deal doesn’t go your way, you lose your money to the establishment. Betting is dependent on the probability of an occurrence to happen.

Gambling has existed for centuries. It can be done on everything that is competitive starting from sports like football and horse racing to boxing matches and fights. Casinos too work on the basis of betting and odds.

Odds

Odds are the beginning and the end of gambling. They are what determine whether a gamble is valuable or not. A betting odd is the probability of a team winning. The odds determine how much you will earn at the end of the game if the team you placed your stakes on wins. For example, if the probability of a horse winning is 4 to 1 and you place your wager on the horse, you are bound to win four times the amount of money you placed if the horse wins.

The odds are usually higher for teams that are less likely to win. If the odd is high, it means that that team is the less favored one to win. If you are to chance on it, and it wins, then you will receive a larger payout than if you wager on a favorite team that has a lower odd and it wins.

Choosing a Bookmaker

The number of bookmakers available in the betting market is huge. And this will always leave you confused on which bookmaker to place your bets with. Well, here are a few things you should consider when deciding on a bookmaker

?     The bookmaker has to be registered with the relevant regulatory and licensing body in your jurisdiction

?     The bookmaker has to be one that pays out the punters their profits on time.

?     Choose a bookmaker with the lowest percentage margins. These margins are set by bookmakers to shield them from experiencing a loss even when many punters have won a bet.

The amount of money you make from a bet is fully dependent on the amount you are willing to lose. This is because the amount you place is bet will be multiplied with the odds of the team if it wins. An example of a bookmaker that can be trusted is Vulkanbet.

Types of Bets

There are three different types of bets;

1.    Single bet

This is the simplest and most common type of gamble. Here you choose a market and place a gamble on the team you hope to win and sit and wait for the outcome. This gamble can also be expanded in that you either bet for it to win, or to be in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. If it wins, then you get the full amount. If your team loses the first position for the other 3, then you are given a percentage of the amount you wagered.

2.    Accumulator bet

This is when you place a single bet for more than one match/game. So instead of placing a risk on a single game, or a single wager on three different games (each with its own bet amount), you place one risk on even 5 games. This means that if all the five games come out in your favor, you will win so much at a low risk. However, if four of the teams win and one loses, then you will have lost the entire stake. This gamble is a low risk/ high return option.

3.    System bet

This is similar to an accumulator bet. It, however, shields you from losing all your money in case one team loses. Punter bet using this system when they want some big wins without risking one team losing.

How to Choose the Team to Wager on

Gambling requires a lot of discipline and self-control. When placing a wager, it is important to ensure that your emotions do not get the better of you. Do not bet on a team based on the fact that you love it. That mentality will see you losing so much. Any betting activity requires that you are patient, you are in control of your emotions and that you exercise endurance.

To place a gamble, you need to study the teams that you will be placing your monies on. How is their form? How have their past games been? What are the chances of the teams winning at home? Away? Are the players in good form? Are there injuries?  How is their defense? These among other factors need to be thoroughly looked into before you decide on which team stands the best chance at winning. Then place your stake.
