PUNK ON MTV, ECW CHECKS, COULD USA CANCEL RAW AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2017-05-25 09:58:00

I seem to remember someone with glasses doing announcing with Jim Ross in the NWA.  I can't place who it was, but it absolutely wasn't Tony Schiavone or Bill Watts.  Any guesses?

My guess is you are thinking of Bob Caudle, who was an excellent announcer for Mid-Atlantic, Crockett Promotions and WCW.  I've interviewed Bob a few times over the years and he's an absolutely wonderful person.

If the WWE ratings keep dropping, could USA Network let them go?

Sure.  There's no guarantee that any show is going to automatically be renewed for a new deal, whether that's Raw or The Walking Dead.  If the network that it airs on doesn't believe the show is worth what they are paying for it and if they aren't happy with the revenue it drives, they could cancel it.  I don't believe that is going to be what happens, but I can see USA Network trying to get a reduced rate if things keep going down the same road.  Cord-cutting is hurting the cable industry and those losses have to get passed down to the shows that the networks are paying for.  It's imperitive that WWE turn those numbers around.

If ECW guys always had their checks bounced, why did they stay?

There's a misconception that the checks were always bouncing, but that's not the case, until the end, where talents weren't getting their checks on time.  When things were tight, there might be a pay period where the checks bounced but the next period would be fine.  Sometimes ECW would make up that period, sometimes they didn't.  It was a cash flow situation.  For some guys, they would end up behind a number of pay periods but it would never be 5-6 weeks in a row or anything like that.  It would be that they got paid for 4 weeks, missed a week, got paid a few weeks, missed a week.  So, they were behind, but it was never a case of they were behind every time and still kept going to work - plus in many cases, ECW would try to make it up down the line.

Why didn't Smoky Mountain Wrestling ever run elsewhere?

It was designed to be a territory for a specific area.  SMW running in say, California wouldn't make any sense.

I saw CM Punk on the MTV series this week when flipping through channels.  Wasn't he the guy mocking the Miz for doing a reality show?

I believe that happened but I can't knock Punk for doing a reality series when he's there to raise money for charity.  It's not like he's trying to parlay his wrestling stature into a reality gig full-time.
