John Cena appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on 3/22 to promote Wrestlemania 33.
Cena came out and immediately praised Fallon and said that Fallon's "Cupid's Arrow" bit from awhile back, where Fallon mocked '80s game shows, inspired the guys at WWE to do a show where they created a faux '80s wrestling show. He unveiled a Southpaw Regional Wrestling shirt and said that the show has been a success on YouTube and it's all because of Fallon inspiring them. He said he wanted to gift Fallon the shirt as a thank you.
Cena then went into promotional mode and said that now, Wrestlemania is coming up on 4/2. Fallon asked Cena what was going to happen at the show. Cena went nuts with all sorts of adjectives in a silly way. Fallon said Cena was going to do some sort of tag team match. Cena joked they had mini-bikes that wouldn't be involved in the show. He had an ongoing joke that Wrestlemania was on "April 2."
Cena said he grew up a wrestling fan his entire life as his father was the biggest fan imaginable. Cena said he grew up with four brothers and said that since his dad was a big wrestling guy, so they were allowed to beat "the heck out of each other" as long as wrestling was on. He said it happened in the house and in the basement. They showed a photo of Cena holding a homemade belt as a child. Cena joked it was a handcrafted belt that was made, not something he made himself. He said he had to chase the belt for six months. He beat his brother at their version of Wrestlemania. Cena said that he loves wrestling so much because it makes him as happy as he was a kid.
Fallon said that Cena's dad has gotten into wrestling. His dad called him and asked if it was OK if he did some local shows in New England and Cena said, yeah sure. Then, his father began advertising himself as John Cena. Cena finally told him he couldn't do that and now he's Johnny Fabulous. He joked that his dad is 70 and they look nothing alike and they were advertising him as John Cena.
Fallon praised Cena's work as the host of the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Award and will be reprising his role in Daddy's Home 2. Cena said he guesses he didn't do anything wrong as they announced him.
Fallon said he was going to be at Wrestlemania. Cena joked he wouldn't really be there. Cena said that if he's there and doesn't see John when he's there, their friendship is over. Fallon acted like John wouldn't want to be bothered and Cena said he absolutely wants to see him that day because it's an important day to him. Cena said he would be fighting alongside the woman he loves and joked she could kick his ass. They are going to fight The Miz and his wife. He said it's a real big deal for he and the woman he loves to stand together as equals.
Fallon asked Cena to stay and play a game. Cena said the last time, Fallon beat him playing "Stickyball" and that's why Cena doesn't Google himself. They then played a game of "Whisper Challenge."
