ZACK SABRE JR. VS. JOHN SILVER AND MORE: 2/26 BEYOND WRESTLING 'UNDER CONSTRUCTION' LIVE REPORT

By Paul Crockett on 2017-02-26 18:00:00

Beyond Wrestling “Under Construction”

February 26, 2017

Providence, Rhode Island

It’s a transition period for Beyond Wrestling as they have started under a new booking regime.  Known lately for great, long term storytelling, the company looks to continue that tradition under new bookers.  This show acts as a conduit to the new era, with no real big storyline implications to start.  It is, however, a loaded show that should be exciting.

MATCH ONE: “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams v. Jay Freddie

A veteran of Keiji Muto’s WRESTLE-1 promotion in Japan, Freddie enters his second match with Beyond since he return against the Catch Point veteran.

As expected, there was a lot of chain wrestling in this one.  Add some stiff strikes and this was a very good opener that didn’t overextend itself and got the crowd off to a good start.

Williams got the win with a DDT into the turnbuckle and a lariat.

WINNER: “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams

MATCH TWO: Milk Chocolate (Brandon Watts & Randy Summers) v. EYFBO (Angel Ortiz & Mike Draztik)

A lot of fast paced action back and forth between the two teams to start things off.  From there they got the heat on Summers, but it didn’t really work since EYFBO was over so much with the crowd as babyfaces.  When Watts got the hot tag it fell flat.  Watts got the crowd back with a wild Sling Blade on the apron that got the crowd fired up.

Milk Chocolate got a nearfall on a powerbomb/backcracker combo after Ortiz broke the count.  The finish came when Ortiz deadlifted Summers into a powerbomb position and Draztik hit a Blockbuster.  The match started slow but it picked up and ended up being very good.

WINNERS: EYFBO

MATCH THREE: Rex Lawless v. Sami Callihan

This was fast and hard hitting out of the gate.  The story told was that Callihan was throwing everything he could think of at the much larger Lawless and Rex kept coming.  Callihan now wrestling in jeans and a shirt with a vest over it.

They cut a pretty ferocious pace for the short amount of time they had.  Great nearfall on a Sky High by Lawless.  The finish saw Lawless going for a Package Piledriver, but Sami got out of it and rolled him up for the win.  Sami got out alive.

WINNER: Sami Callihan

MATCH FOUR: Da Hoodz (Davey Cash & Kris Pyro) w/Anthony Stone v. PAWG (Jordynne Grace & LuFisto)

Grace & LuFisto got jumped before the bell.  It didn’t take long for them to get back in it and finish the match quickly.  LuFisto hit Pyro with a brutal Burning Hammer, LuFisto dropped Cash, and they teamed up for a double butt bump to Cash’s head for the quick victory.  A big surprise and it got a great reaction from the crowd.

WINNERS: PAWG

MATCH FIVE: Jonathan Gresham v. Chris Dickinson

Dickinson came out with a Sakuraba mask and hoodie.  That was tremendous.

Gresham with a distinct size disadvantage went after the knee of Dickinson to try and chop him down.  Dickinson, meanwhile, was coming at Gresham hard with brutal kicks.

The intensity was really high for this, and Gresham did an outstanding job as the technician trying to overcome the endless assault.

The finish saw Gresham get Dickinson down to the floor and eventually got a submission with a Figure Four doubled with hammer fists to the injured knee.  Excellent storytelling.  After the match, they shook hands, but then Dickinson flattened Gresham with a piledriver and started a ground and pound.  That brought out Jordynne Grace to make the save for her boyfriend.  As Dickinson was ready to attack her, his Team Pazuzu stablemate Jaka came out and pulled him off and talked reason into him.  This was an interesting start to a storyline going forward.

WINNER: Jonathan Gresham

MATCH SIX: Massage NV (Dorian Graves & VSK) v. Chuck Taylor & Orange Cassidy w/ Swamp Monster

Massage NV’s gimmick is that they try to give their opponents massages during the match.  Orange Cassidy’s gimmick is he’s really weak and lazy and he won’t run on Irish Whips, he simply walks slowly.  Then Taylor gets mad at him for it.  They had a whole match based upon all of this.  At one point, both Cassidy and Swamp Monster received massages and loved it.  The crowd howled in delight, so they had that going for them.

Cassidy went to spit orange juice into the eyes of VSK twice, but he missed and misted his own partners.  Massage NV then shot baby oil onto Cassidy and he landed in the corner.  They then hit the slip and slide.  They ended it with the 3D into a codebreaker for the win.

WINNERS: Massage NV

MATCH SEVEN: JT Dunn v. Michael Elgin

This was a classic power versus agility style of match, with Big Mike bringing out his greatest hits from New Japan, including his stalling suplex for thirty seconds, great power moves and really hard strikes.

There were a lot of nearfalls near the end of this on a LOT of moves.  The crowd got really up for all of it and were totally into everything they were doing.  The finish saw Dunn no-sell a buckle bomb and follow up with two Death By Elbows without an elbow pad for the win.  The crowd was shocked and booed.

Elgin got on the mic and said Dunn got a lot better in the four years since they last wrestled here.  He said Beyond is like that second Uncle you see every once in a while, but when you do, it’s the best experience ever.  He put the fans and the company over and said thank you.

WINNER: JT Dunn

INTERMISSION

MATCH EIGHT: Jaka v. Keith Lee

Blow-for-blow.  Or more appropriately, move-for-move and finger-for-finger was the story of the match.  Lee teased Jaka before the match that his spinning kick was lame.  Then they BOTH tried one and missed early.  They also went after each other’s fingers at the beginning, with Lee trying to snap them and Jaka biting them.

It was a slugfest from there, and it was one the fans were really into.  Lee was overwhelming Jaka with big power moves and was looking to finish it when Jaka spinned out and rolled up Lee for the surprise victory.  Good match.

WINNER: Jaka

MATCH NINE: Ryan Galeone & Veda Scott v. Joey Janela & Penelope Ford

Janela and Ford got jumped before the bell and we’re off to the races.  Janela with a suicide dive to the floor and then Ford with a crossbody block from the top to the floor as well.

The crowd was super into this and Janela and Ford in particular were super over.

Galeone with a vicious lariat on Ford and then one arm tossed her over the top rope to the floor.  Okay then.

A lot of wild bumps involving Ford onto Galeone, including a somersault Lethal Injection where Galeone landed on the top of his head.  Then Janela and Veda traded really hard chops on the apron, followed by Scott landing a really scary Canadian Destroyer on the apron.

The finish saw Ford hit a cartwheel back elbow to Veda as Janela held her on the top rope in the corner, followed by a top rope Michinoku Driver for the win.  This match was nuts, and you can take that however you want to take it.

WINNERS: Joey Janela & Penelope Ford

MATCH TEN: Ace Romero & Brian Milonas v. Da Hit Squad (Dan Maff & Monsta Mack)

This is about a 1500 pounds of human in the ring.  I’m exaggerating, but it’s four gigantic dudes.  There was nothing really fancy here and there didn’t need to be.  They all hit each other really hard and that’s what they should have done.  That and a ton of rolling sentons into the corner.

The finish came when Da Hit Squad cut Romero off as he was on the top.  They then double press slammed him into Milonas in the opposite corner for the pin.  That was a spectacle to say the least, and as Beyond owner Drew Cordeiro put it, “a best case scenario.”

WINNERS: Da Hit Squad

MATCH ELEVEN: Bro Steel (Matt Riddle & Chuck O’Neil) v. American Destroyers (Donovan Dijak & Mikey Webb)

Riddle jumped Webb before the bell and O’Neil snuck around the ring and pulled Dijak out to start the match.  They immediately cut the ring off on Webb and got the heat on him.  Riddle and O’Neil with some vicious offense on Webb.  Riddle hit a huge German suplex and Webb popped right up and no-sold.  But instead of tagging he stayed in.  Eventually, he got the hot tag and from there it went back and forth.

The big spot saw Riddle and Dijak each hit a Feast Your Eyes on the other’s partner and then square off which the crowd went insane for heading into their Mania weekend match.

They traded double submissions and some nearfalls when Riddle ate a double boot on the floor.  O’Neil was trapped in the ring and Dijak put him out with a Feast Your Eyes.  Dijak refused to cover and said he wanted Riddle.  They had a good back and forth with Riddle kicking out of the American Destroyer finish (sunset flip into a Canadian Destroyer).  Riddle then was able to transition into the Bromission for the tap out.

WINNERS: Bro Steel

MAIN EVENT: Zack Sabre, Jr. v. John Silver

Sabre out with both the PWG & Evolve title belts.

Lots of really good, smooth mat work to start things out with Silver holding up his end.  Not surprising since Silver has recently taken up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has even competed.  When he wasn’t getting the better end of the exchange, Silver started with his patented hard kicks and forearms to shake things up.

Sabre started working over the arm of Silver while Silver kept going for the big killshot with strikes.

The match broke down into a lot of really hard slaps that CLEARLY were connecting.  Both guys were trying to slap the face off the other and were close.  They traded big submission attempts on the ground including a big armbar and triangle by Zack that Silver fought out of.  Silver then got Sabre to the floor and choked Sabre out with a vicious straightjacket submission for the giant upset.  Silver has been on a roll in Beyond and this helps cement his status as one of their top stars.

WINNER: John Silver

This was an excellent show from Beyond.  The pacing, which they sometimes struggle with, was perfect and the stories were told effectively for the most part.  If this is the trend for the company, their future looks bright.
