BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK'S WRESTLING TOTALS AND A LOOK AT 2016'S TOTALS

By Richard Trionfo on 2017-01-20 06:09:00

I will skip the usual recap of this week’s action because I wanted to take a look back at what we saw in wrestling in 2016.

Looking Back at 2016

The last year saw a new television home for Impact, a new wrestling show featuring the cruiserweights (who are somehow exclusive to Raw despite appearing on a total of three shows and Raw brand pay per views), and the end of an era for another show that was put on hiatus (along with Byte This) that had become a shadow of itself (something that the show that took away a lot of the spotlight from Superstars has become).  The biggest changes to the landscape were the live broadcasts of Smackdown and the additional pay per views added to the WWE at the end of the year.

The seven shows featured a total of 8,722 minutes of wrestling on television that qualified under the rules of this column.  There were a total of 1,442 matches spread out over 552 hours of wrestling.  The average match length for the year on television was 6.049 minutes.  The average hour of wrestling on television in 2016 had 15.80 minutes of wrestling.

There were 228 matches that went 10 minutes or longer and 85 matches that qualified as one minute matches.  The longest qualifying match of the year was the 38 minute match between Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe from NXT on March 9th.  The most wrestling on a single show in 2016 was 61 minutes on the January 4th episode of Raw while the lowest amount of wrestling on a qualifying show in 2016 was 5 minutes on the September 14th episode of Main Event.

When you add the pay per views to the totals, there was a total of 2,394 minutes of wrestling on pay per view in 2016 to give us a total amount of wrestling of 11,116 minutes.  The 170 matches on pay per view gave us a total of 1,612 matches.  There were 75 hours of pay per views in 2016 to make the total amount of wrestling 627 hours.  With the pay per view matches factored in, the average match length for 2016 was 6.90 minutes and the average hour had 17.73 minutes of wrestling.

Having the most available hours of wrestling meant that Raw won the year with 2,204 minutes of wrestling, down from 2,327 minutes in 2015.  There were 386 matches on Raw in 2016, the same as in 2015.  The average match length was 5.71 minutes, down from 6.03 minutes in 2015.  The average amount of wrestling per hour was 14.13 minutes, down from 15.21 minutes in 2015.  Raw had 69 ten minute matches in 2016, down from 74 in 2015.  There were 41 one minute matches in 2016, up from 27 in 2015.

Impact finished the year in second place despite having three fewer shows than Smackdown.   Impact had a total of 1,550 minutes of wrestling, down from 1,716 minutes in 2015.  There were 233 matches in 2016, down from 250 matches in 2015.  The average match length was 6.65 minutes, down from 6.86 minutes in 2015.  The average hour of television had 15.82 minutes of wrestling, down from 17.51 minutes in 2015.  Impact had 38 ten minute matches in 2016, down from 42 in 2015.  There were 6 one minute matches in 2016, down from 10 in 2015.

Smackdown took third place for the year with 1,482 minutes of wrestling on the 52 episodes during the year.  This was down from 1,604 minutes of wrestling in 2015, a total that benefited from an extra episode during the year.  Smackdown had a total of 258 matches in 2016, down from 291 matches in 2015.  The average match in 2016 was 5.74 minutes, up from 5.51 minutes in 2015.  The average amount of wrestling per hour in 2016 was 14.25 minutes, down from 15.13 minutes in 2015.  Smackdown had 47 ten minute matches in 2016, up from 39 matches in 2015.  There were 20 one minute matches in 2016, down from 23 matches in 2015.

Ring of Honor was able to edge out NXT for fourth place in 2016 despite having eight fewer episodes of television during the year.  Ring of Honor had 978 minutes of wrestling, down from 1,018 minutes of wrestling in 2015 from two more episodes of television.  There were a total of 135 matches in 2016, down from 134 matches in 2015.  The average match in 2016 was 7.24 minutes, down from 7.60 minutes in 2015.  The average episode of Ring of Honor had 23.85 minutes of wrestling in 2016, up from 23.67 minutes in 2015.  There were 35 ten minutes matches in 2016, down from 42 matches in 2015.  Ring of Honor had 7 one minute matches in 2016, down from 8 matches in 2015.

NXT finished in fifth place with 971 minutes of wrestling in 2016 and by some quirk or miracle, it was the same amount of wrestling as this show had in 2015.  NXT had an extra hour and a half of programming in 2016 than 2015.  There were 184 matches in 2016 on NXT, down from 197 matches in 2015.  The average match was 5.28 minutes in 2016, up from 4.93 minutes in 2015.  An hour of NXT had an average of 19.82 minutes of wrestling in 2016, down from 20.44 minutes of wrestling per hour in 2015.   There were 19 ten minute matches in 2016, up from 14 matches in 2015.  NXT had 10 one minute matches in 2016, down from 17 matches in 2015.

Main Event, despite the change from a viable wrestling show to Smackdown’s version of Superstars to the replacement for Superstars, had 851 minutes of wrestling in 2016 to finish in sixth place, down from 997 minutes in 2015.  There were a total of 51 episodes of Main Event in 2015 and 2016.   There were 136 matches in 2016, down from 167 matches in 2015.  The average match was 6.26 minutes in 2016, up from 5.97 minutes in 2015.  The average episode of Main Event had 16.69 minutes of wrestling in 2016, down from 19.55 minutes in 2015.  There were 13 ten minute matches in 2016, down from 21 matches in 2015.  There was 1 one minute matches in 2016, down from 5 matches in 2015.

Superstars, which ended its run in November, had 563 minutes of wrestling in 2016 to finish in seventh place, up from 558 minutes in 2015.  Superstars had two fewer episodes in 2016 than in 2015.  There were 95 matches in 2016, down from 100 matches in 2015.  The average match was 5.93 minutes in 2016, up from 5.58 minutes in 2015.  There were 11.73 minutes of wrestling per hour in 2016, up from 11.16 minutes in 2015.  There was one ten minute match in 2016, the same as 2015.  There were no one minute matches in 2016, the same total as 2015.

With only five episodes broadcast in 2016, 205 Live finished in last place for the year with a total of 123 minutes of wrestling.  On the five shows, there were a total of 15 matches.  The average match on 205 Live was 8.20 minutes.  The average amount of wrestling per show was 24.6 minutes.  There were 6 ten minute matches and this show did not have any one minute matches in 2016.

We cannot forget the pay per views in 2016.  All three companies gave us pay per view events with the WWE doubling up in the second half of the year once the brand split was established.

In 2016, there were a total of 23 pay per views from WWE, TNA, and ROH.  WWE had 15 pay per views, TNA had 2 pay per views, and ROH had 6 pay per views.  There were a total of 2,394 minutes of wrestling on the pay per views with WWE contributing 1,560 minutes, ROH providing 639 minutes, and TNA giving us 195 minutes.  There were a total of 170 matches on pay per view in 2016.  WWE had 105 matches, TNA had 16 matches, and ROH had 49 matches.

The average match length on pay per view in 2016 was 14.08 minutes.  The average match in WWE was 14.86 minutes.  The average match in ROH was 13.04 minutes.  The average match in TNA was 12.19 minutes.

The average amount of wrestling per hour was 31.92 minutes in 2016.  There was an average of 30.59 minutes of wrestling per hour.  In ROH, there was an average of 35.5 minutes of wrestling per hour. In TNA, there was an average of 32.5 minutes of wrestling per hour.

Because pay per views are the place for longer matches, the threshold has been lifted for long matches to 20 minutes and for short matches to 5 minutes.  In 2016, there were a total of 26 twenty minute matches and 7 five minute matches.  WWE had 23 twenty minute matches and 6 five minute matches in 2016.  ROH had 2 twenty minute matches and 0 five minute matches in 2016.  TNA had 1 twenty minute match and 1 five minute match in 2016.

I started a new feature in 2016 and it is back for 2017.  Since a the times for the matches can be a little misleading because the counts are only for the time on the show and does not factor the commercial breaks.  If there is a [c] next to a match, it means that there was a commercial break.
