NAKAMURA & DIY TEAM: 1/19 WWE NXT IN ORLANDO, FL LIVE REPORT

By Andrew Twiss on 2017-01-19 23:04:00

Here are full results from NXT LIVE in Orlando, FL on January 19, 2017

Your hosts are Andrea D'Marco and Vic Joseph

M&G: Ember Moon, Gabriel and Uriel Ealy

Hosts: Andrea D'Marco

- Jack Gallagher def  Tony Nese - A fun little opener with Gallagher constantly using his submissions to keep Nese grounded and escape from Nese's submission attempts. Nese would end up using his striking to take control at points. The crowd was totally into Gallagher and it got the night off to a hot start.

- Lana def. Kimberly Frankele - These house shows are always a bit weird to see Lana working as a full on face, dancing and playing to the crowd. The match itself was ok. At times Lana looked good with some nice strikes and holds. Other times, it looked like they were struggling to find their chemistry and timing. Lana would get locked in a hold several times and then immediately kick away without letting Frankele work it. It was an interesting match to watch.

- Steve Cutler cuts a promo putting over his military service as a Marine. He asks all of the military members in the audience to stand up. They do, to a round of applause from the audience. Cutler then calls out all of the other audience members, saying they are cowards, even the children. The promo had great intensity, even if it was a bit confusing. First he puts over his and others' military service. Then he turns on the crowd. But why should I boo the guy who served his country?

- Steve Cutler def. Adrian Jaoude - Cutler's promo was interrupted, leading to this match. It was a solid, hard hitting match. Jaoude was on the defensive for most of it. Cutler is good in the role of hard hitting fighter. If he can ever find that one bit of presentation that clicks with an audience, it would do wonders for his standing in NXT.

- Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford def. Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli - I've been pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoy Dawkins and Ford as a fun, babyface team. They dance and strut and the crowd loves it. The match was good too. Tino and Riddick are good at using their power to keep an opponent down and the tag chemistry is getting there. Dawkins ended up making the hot tag and was a man on fire, getting the win. I can't say enough about how revitalized Dawkins is.

- Roderick Strong def. Elias Samson - Probably the match of the night. It was a bit slow to get going, with Samson hitting some strikes and using some rest holds to slow the match down. He eventually hit a a running knee to the outside on Strong to get the advantage. Instead of capitalizing, he took the opportunity to grab his guitar, call Andrea D'Marco over, and begin singing during the match. Of course the crowd HATED him for doing this. It allowed Strong to get his wits about and attacks the Drifter to get the upper hand. Strong would quicken the pace, and get the win with the One Swift Kick.

- Billie Kay and Peyton Royce def. Aliyah and Liv Morgan - This was a whole lot of domination by Billie and Peyton. Aliyah and Liv, got their advantage in early, but once Peyton and Billie got Liv in the ring, they never let her get out. It's the rare, longer tag match where the hot tag never occurs. Billie and Peyton would just beat on Liv until hitting a wheelbarrow/running knee combo to win.

- Heavy Machinery (Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovic) come other for their interview. At first, Otis is distracted by Andrea D'Marco's beauty and can't focus. Tucker gets things back on track, with him describing how they have really men's bodies and they love their carbs. Otis would repeat after him, basically doing a Chris Farley impersonation. Tucker finally said they were here t put the tag division on notice. Otis told all of the other teams that they would get dozed over. Solid, fun stuff, albeit a little weird.

- Aleister Black def. Patrick Clark - Decent match that saw Clark being afraid to engage Black at first, knowing how dangerous of a striker he is. Clark would dominate a majority of the match until Black used his striking to retake control and win.

- Shinsuke Nakamura and DIY def. Wesley Blake and The Authors of Pain - A decent main event. Gargano and Ciampa did a lot of the work for the good guys and Blake was the workhorse for the heels. Nakamura was kept very well protected, basically being used for a short time early and then to clean house at the end. The Authors and Blake would work Gargano over for a while until Nakamura came in. The crowd enjoyed it.

The one issue with the main events on these Florida swings, especially when they have the full crew, is that they are trying to protect the star power at the top so much, that the match quality suffers. I totally understand wanting to protect Nakamura so close to Takeover. It's completely reasonable. But it opens the door for the undercard to outshine the main event. I'm honestly not sure what the best solution is, but it's always a little weird when your main event isn't the best match on the show.

Notes:

- A member of the NXT crew had a roving ringside camera to film parts of several matches and to also get crowd shots. I'm not certain what any of this footage would end up being used for.

- Yes, Tommy End is backing to using the Aleister Black name.

- Wesley Blake is back to wearing his old Blake and Murphy gear the last few weeks. He had been wearing short trunks, boots with neon tassels, and a jacket that shot streamers from it. Not sure why there's been a gear change.

- NXT returns to the Engelwood Neighborhood Center on March 11

- Meet and Greet before the show was Ember Moon, Gabriel and Uriel Ealy
