HEYMAN VS. CORNETTE AS OVW BOOKER, WHY WWE IGNORED OVW STORYLINES AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-08-04 10:00:00

I have some questions about Ohio Valley Wrestling:

Ok so Damaja and Doug Basham were having a serious feud on TV and WWE brings them up as brothers, why?? Did they assume that nobody watches ovw? Was it to get on Jim Cornette's nerves?

WWE put the pair together because they wanted a tag team and needed a pair of talents to make one.  Although today, a good portion of the audience is aware of NXT, back when OVW was the predominant developmental territory, the TV was barely seen outside of the local area, so WWE had no concerns about taking talents and re-casting them.  While it led to frustrations for Jim Cornette and Danny Davis, WWE management didn't care about that.

2) Speaking of Cornette, he says they would call him the day of TV and tell him who to use 2 hours before the show would be taped. Did he have to listen to them for that? Do you know examples of this?

That happened towards the end of Cornette's OVW run as WWE exerted more pressure on what they wanted and who they wanted getting TV time to be prepared for the main roster.  For the majority of the run, Cornette had his creative control to book a territory the way he wanted.

3) Do you think if WWE brought Nick Dinsmore up as Mr Wrestling he would have gotten over instead of the Eugene gimmick?

Dinsmore was always a great talent and he may have gotten over, but certainly Dinsmore the wrestler wouldn't have gotten over as huge or moved as much merchandise as Eugene the character, which at one point, was the hottest character in the company.

4) When Heyman was booking OVW did it annoy you when he shoved Osama Rodriguez and Shelly Martinez down our throats?

No, I thought that Heyman did a great job of giving them and others a good featured spot on TV.  I always loved the Robbie Dawber appearances as well.  While I preferred the Cornette era of OVW, Heyman did a great job booking the territory.

5) Who do you think was the better booker for OVW, Cornette or Heyman? I think for the latter the only two things I enjoyed were the Capotelli/Jeter feud and Punk vs Albright feud.

I don't have a specific pick about who was better, because they were different animals.  Cornette was booking an old school territory to prepare talents for the wrestling business.  Heyman was booking a sports-entertainment show to prepare talents for WWE TV.  They each had their strengths and each were very, very good.

6) Do you agree Johnny Jeter should have been a bigger star in wwe than he was? Spirit Squad killed him and now he is out of the business?

YES.  Johnny Jeter was a hell of a talent and it really sucked that by the time the Spirit Squad ran its course, he had been carted off to OVW and his spirit for the business was sapped as he was never used again.

7) One last one- did you ever attend an ovw show in KY?

Sadly, I never have.  Hopefully one day.
