FORMER WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION RETURNING

By Mike Johnson on 2016-07-26 21:04:00

During tonight's edition of WWE Smackdown Live, a video package announced the forthcoming return of former WWE Intercontinental champion Shelton Benjamin.  PWInsider.com reported on 7/17 in the Elite section that Benjamin was expected to return to the company.

Benjamin, 41, was signed to a developmental deal in 2000 before making his main roster debut as part of Team Angle in 2003.  He worked for the company until being released in 2010, capturing the WWE IC, the United States championship and several WWE Tag Team championships with Charlie Haas.

Since leaving WWE, Benjamin had worked for New Japan and Ring of Honor (holding the ROH Tag belts twice with Haas) as well as a number of independents.

Benjamin is among a number of names that WWE has looked into bringing back.  Confirmed as returning as well as Rhyno and Brian "Curt Hawkins" Myers.

PWInsider.com has reported a number of names the company is interested in over the last several weeks in the Elite section.
