BILL CARDILLE PASSES AWAY

By Mike Johnson on 2016-07-22 10:15:00

Bill Cardille, a television instituation in the Steel City of Pittsburgh for many years, passed away yesterday following a battle with liver cancer at the age of 87.

Cardille held many positions in TV, including as a long-time host of "Chiller Theatre" in the market as horror character Chilly Billy (the character was the basis for the horror show sketches on SCTV), but within professional wrestling, was the host for WIIC-TV channel 11's "Studio Wrestling" series, which would air Saturdays at 6 PM.

The series was live from the WIIC studios and ran from the late 1950s through 1972 with Cardille as the host for most of the run, which featured talents from the area booked by Toodts Mondt, including then-WWWF champion Bruno Sammartino.  The series moved to WPGH in 1974 before shutting down and being replaced by WWWF's syndicated series.

In recent years, Cardille was still active appearing at local horror and pop culture conventions in the Pittsburgh area.

On behalf of everyone associated with PWInsider.com, I'd like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friend and fans of Bill Cardille.
