BATTLES FOR THE AZTEC MEDALLIONS: 6/22 LUCHA UNDERGROUND TV REPORT

Fame & Fortune

Previously on Lucha Underground

  • Dario Cueto talks about the Gift of the Gods title, over shots of Cage losing to Mantanza a few weeks back.
  • Famous B recruiting Mascarita Sagrada
  • Joey Ryan defeated Sagrada
  • A recap of Black Lotus and El Dragon Azteca Jr.'s tiff outside of Montana's cell

Interstitial #1: Night Claw is in Dario Cueto's office. He explains about the Gift of the Gods title, and then tosses Night Claw an ancient Aztec Medallion as a "signing bonus."  Night Claw says he will debut at Ultima Lucha Dos and prove to everyone how great he is. Dario warns Night Claw that the Jaguar Tribe (whom Night Claw draws his lineage from) were the most arrogant tribe and were the first to be destroyed by the gods. Night Claw isn't impressed.

Backstory: From what I've read, Night Claw is actually Flamita, who was last seen in AAA as Octagon Jr. There are rumors that this is Brian Cage in a mask, since Night Claw was the name of a character he had developed, and was supposed to debut when he was in WWE developmental.

House Band: It remains the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Match #1 for an Ancient Aztec Medallion: Daga vs. Mascarita Sagrada w/Famous B and the Beautiful Brenda

Pre-Match:  Famous B does the introduction for Famous B. Kobra Moon is stalking Daga from the top of Dario Cueto's office.

The Match:  This is pretty much like the past few matches Mascarita Sagrada has since Famous B became his manager. Mascarita hits one big move (in this case a hurricanrana), and his bigger opponents dominates him. Gaga quickly dispenses of Mascarita with a vicious crossface.

Winner: Daga

Post-Match: The Beautiful Brenda babies Mascarita Sagrada, but Famous B super kicks the famed mini. Famous B takes off his shoe and beats Sagrada with it. He gets on the mic and says he's going to find a new client, and that client "will be famous."

Interstitial #2: Dario Cueto is talking with El Dragon Azteca Jr., and tells him that he needs to go after Black Lotus. He says Lotus killed his mentor, not his brother. Dragon Azteca seems to buy it.

Match #2: Kill Shot, Marty "The Moth" Martinez, Sinestro de la Muerte vs. Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro, and Mr. Cisco for Three Ancient Aztec Medallions:

Pre-Match: Marty buries the hatchet with Kill Shot by returning the dog tags he stole from his previously.

The Match: This match never really got out of first gear. There was the funny segments between Ryan and Martinez involving Ryan's lollipop. Yes, Cisco and Castro hit some nice spots, and Kill Shot did an awesome step-off moonsault off of Castro onto the other wrestlers on the outside, but this just didn't do it for me. They kept doing spots where Joey Ryan kept trying to hog the spotlight and get the pinfall, but only ended up costing his team. The three end up arguing, which allows Marty to curb stomp Cisco, and Kill Shot hit the double stomp from the top for the win.

Winner: Marty "The Moth," Kill Shot, and Sinestro de la Muerte.

Post-Match: Marty steals the dog tags back and runs away.

Match #3: "Parejas Incredibles" -- Taya & Ivelisse vs. Sexy Star and Mariposa for Two Ancient Aztec Medallions:

This was the match of the night, and it was obviously going to be before the bell rang as you have four incredible women's wrestlers. For those unfamiliar, Mariposa is Cheerleader Melissa. Throughout the match they played up the hatred and distrust the team members had for each other. This match featured a lot of submission work and stiff strikes. Things broke down when Taya accidentally speared Ivelisse. This allowed Mariposa to hit an Kryptonite Krunch on Ivelisse. She then tossed Sexy on top of Ivelisse since she was the legal women.

Winner: Sexy Star and Mariposa

In-Ring Segment: This is a rarity for Lucha Underground. You don't see many, if any, in-ring extended promos like this. Prince Puma comes out, and does what I've been hoping he was going to do for the past few weeks -- challenge Rey Mysterio Jr. to a match. Puma cuts an impassioned promo about being the best, and how he needs to be able to beat Rey in order to be the best. Rey comes out says he's got a ton of respect from Puma, but "[Puma] is still a prince, but  he is "El Rey." Rey wants to prove to himself that he is still the best luchador as well.

Overall Thoughts: This was probably one of the my least favorite episodes of Season 2. It felt a little rushed, as they were trying to get all the Gift of the Gods qualifiers chosen in one episode. The crew they assembled for this Gift of the Gods match isn't as impressive as the one from a few weeks ago (The Mack, Cage, Sexy Star, Texano, Aero Star, Sinestro de la Muerte, Joey Ryan). In fact, it would've made more sense to do the Brian Cage angle (where he destroys every one in the match) with this crew as they're mostly still younger, lower card performers. The fact they "gave" a spot away to a performer that's never been in the Temple, and a spot to a character that was seemingly written off (Mariposa) was kind of weird. Qualifying the awesome Daga against Mascarita was kind of lame, and once again Sinestro de la Muerte ends up in the match doing very little to get in.

The highlight of this episode is Prince Puma challenged Rey Mysterio Jr. to a match, something they had been building for a weeks, and Rey accepting the challenge. I can't wait to see that.
