RIP KIMBO, UFC REINSTATES REPORTER

By Mike Johnson on 2016-06-07 08:26:00

It was very sad to hear of the passing of MMA fighter Kimbo Slice last night.  I had the chance to see him headline an EliteXC card in Newark, NJ in 2008 and he had a ton of charisma and was a real unique character.  Seeing him punch James Thompson's cauliflower ear and making it explode was one of the most insane thing I've ever seen, and I've covered a number of CZW Tournament of Death shows in person.  Slice was tailor-made for professional wrestling.  In 2006, before Slice really became a name in MMA circles and was still known for his underground fighting videos, Tommy Dreamer pitched to WWE that they should hire him but management at the time didn't go with the idea.   Just a year or so ago, WWE's website ran a story about the idea never coming to fruition.

Also, to follow-up on the fallout of the Brock Lesnar story being broken and reported Ariel Helwani being "banned for life", UFC has decided to rescind their ban on Helwani after he broke several stories at MMAFighting.com, including the return of Brock Lesnar online while on site covering UFC 199.

Earlier yesterday, Dana White had told TMZ that Helwani would never be credentialed again as long as White was with UFC.  Well, that turned out not to be the case as UFC issued a statement stating that the credential ban for the site would be lifted while noting, "We respect the role the media plays in our sport and beyond, including MMAFighting’s ability to report news. However, in our opinion, we believe the recurring tactics used by its lead reporter extended beyond the purpose of journalism. We feel confident our position has now been adequately communicated to the SB Nation editorial team."

The decision to ban Helwani for life really only resulted in Helwani getting a ton of media attention and UFC being painted really badly for 24 hours.
