FORMER WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION RETURNS

By Mike Johnson on 2016-05-22 23:06:00

As we broke this morning in the Elite section of PWInsider.com, Seth Rollins returned to WWE tonight, attacking WWE World Heavyweight champion Roman Reigns to end the Extreme Rules PPV, nailing him with a Pedigree.  As we noted, Rollins was cleared to return to the ring after a visit to the WWE Performance Center.

Rollins was originally penciled in to return the week of 6/6 but the decision was made to bring him back in a major angle to kick off a new storyline as the company heads to Money in the Bank next month.

Rollins' knee buckled under him during a November 2015 match against Kane on a WWE European tour as he went for a powerbomb out of the corner.  Since he had no initial pain or discomfort after the match but could tell the knee was off, initially the belief was Rollins had simply tweaked his knee and would likely work the rest of the tour while protecting it...until he went for an MRI the next day.

The MRI showed that Rollins had actually torn legimaments in his ACL, MCL and medial meniscus and would require surgery to repair the damage.  WWE stripped Rollins of the WWE World Heavyweight championship, he returned to the United States and he immediately underwent surgery.

Initially the recovery was expected to be as long as nine months but Rollins was able to rehab and return in just six months.  He just completed filming WWE Studios' supernatural thriller "Temple" in New Orleans, starring Wesley Snipes, several weeks ago.

Rollins is scheduled for this week's Raw and Smackdown tapings and will be back full-time.
