OMEGA'S CHOICE, LUCHA UNDERGROUND TO NETFLIX?, SCHIAVONE LAUNCHES WCW PODCAST, RYBACK BOOK AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2017-01-27 14:06:00

Congratulations to Davey Richards and Angelina Love, who recently married.

Kenny Omega announced on an edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that he intended to head to Japan next month to negotiate a new deal with New Japan.  As I wrote here on the site, if he didn't pop up by NJPW's New Beginning event, it was time to sit up and take notice.  Omega did a tremendous job marketing and positioning himself coming out of the Wrestle Kingdom event.  His current deal with New Japan expires on 1/31.  Thanks to everyone who sent that along.

NOTHING IS CONFIRMED, but there has been a LOT of talk making the rounds that Lucha Underground, as in the entire series, could be leaving El Rey and shifting over to Netflix.  It is a story that has been talked about publicly over the last several days (specifically on a Konnan podcast appearance) but privately over the last week or two.  I have been unable to get any sort of comment, one way or the other, about the status of the series.  The plan was to film a new season before the end of the year, but nothing has been made official.   El Rey has split the current season up with the idea that it would air towards the latter part of 2017, which was not the plan when it was filmed.   The fact El Rey has canceled its flagship series "From Dusk 'Till Dawn" is telling in terms of their future plans in my opinion, but again, we will see what happens.  There has been very little promotional support for LU this season and obviously no touring for the brand beyond a few shows in the Southwest, so the series has yet to morph beyond being a very different and fun TV series,

It was announced today that former WCW announcer Tony Schiavone has launched a new podcast titled "What Happened When Monday" (WHW) with Conrad Thompson as the two will examine one specific topic from Jim Crockett Promotions and/or World Championship Wrestling in great detail.  The debut show will cover the rise of Bill Goldberg from his September 1997 debut all the way to his first loss at Starrcade 1998.   The debut podcast will be released this Monday (three hours in length!) on iTunes, GooglePlay, TuneIn, SoundCloud, iHeart, Stitcher, Spotify, and MLWRadio.com.   Schivaone was the talk of the Mid-Atlantic Legends Fanfest last summer, so this should be a lot of fun.  For more, follow the show on Twitter at Twitter.com/WHWMonday.

The Bruce Prichard event Wrestlemania weekend on 4/1 is sold out in advance.
