BEYOND THE NUMBERS: THE MATCHES OF 2010: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT PART I: THIS COLUMN HAS A TEN MINUTE TIME LIMIT

By Richard Trionfo on 2011-01-11 02:00:41
Each week in my By the Numbers columns, I provide a list of matches on each of the six weekly shows from World Wrestling Entertainment, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, and Ring of Honor and how long those matches are. In addition to the per match average and per hour average for each show, I have provided a list of the matches at each end of the time spectrum. At the upper end, I have looked at the matches that are more than nine minutes and thirty seconds in length that qualify as a ‘ten minute match.’

Because of the nature of the shows from World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling to go to commercial during many of the matches, this means that some of these matches were actually two to four minutes longer than they were recorded at because I do not include commercial breaks in my totals. Ring of Honor does not have that problem since they run on HDNet with limited commercials so that would protect matches that would have been cut short by commercial breaks that keep the amount of wrestling on television under the nine minute and thirty second barrier.

While there are some matches that will make the list in my final retrospective column for 2010 that were short that I really enjoyed, the fact that a match is long does not necessarily mean that it was among the best matches of the year.

In 2010, of the 1,319 matches that were on television, 170 matches, or 12.89 percent of all matches during the year, qualified as a ten minute match. Here is a breakdown of the matches by show they appeared on during the year.

Ring of Honor: 53 Matches (31.18 percent of all ten minute matches and 32.32 percent of all matches on Ring of Honor for the year)
WWE Smackdown: 43 Matches (25.29 percent of all ten minute matches and 15.75 percent of all matches on Smackdown for the year)
WWE Raw: 27 Matches (15.88 percent of all ten minute matches and 8.74 percent of all matches on Raw for the year)
TNA Impact: 21 Matches (12.35 percent of all ten minute matches and 7.53 percent of WWE Superstars: 16 Matches (9.41 percent of all ten minute matches and 9.30 percent of all matches on Superstars for the year)
all matches on Impact for the year)
WWE NXT: 5 Matches (2.94 percent of all ten minute matches and 4.81 percent of all matches on NXT for the year)
