By Richard Trionfo on 2010-12-08 14:57:42
On Saturday night, Full Impact Pro Wrestling returned to Crystal River for the second night of the 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup, an annual event that brings sixteen men together to honor the life of Jeff Peterson, who passed away in 2002 from cancer. Since 2003, the top wrestlers have come to Florida including CM Punk, Homicide, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Chris Hero, James Gibson, Matt Sydal, Joey Ryan, El Generico, TJ Wilson, Jon Moxley, Roderick Strong, and Davey Richards. The tournament has also seen some of the current rising stars such as Johnny Gargano, Craig Classic, Silas Young, Egotistico Fantastico, Arik Cannon, Jon Davis, and Kenny King.

Past Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup winners are Tom ‘Reckless Youth’ Carter (2003), Justice (2004), Chris Sabin (2005), Milano Collection AT (2006), Chris Hero (2007), Erick Stevens (2008), and Davey Richards (2009)

This year’s tournament includes a number of veterans to the Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup as well as a few rookies to the tournament. Returning to the JPC are Craig Classic, Arik Cannon, Brad Allen, Jigsaw, Chris Gray, and Jon Moxley. Newcomers to the JPC are AR Fox, Scott Reed, Frightmare, Rich Swann, Sami Callihan, Chris Dickinson, Sugar Dunkerton, Lince Dorado, Grizzly Redwood, and Jake Manning.

Here are some of the stories coming out of Night Two:

”The New Horror” Sami Callihan is the 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup Winner

After defeating Chris Dickinson on Friday night in the first round, Sami Callihan defeated Frightmare in the quarterfinals, Rich Swann in the semifinals, and Jon Moxley in the finals to become the eighth winner of the Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup. Callihan impressed the fans in Brooksville and Crystal River over the two nights of the tournament with a mixture of intensity and wrestling skill.

New Wrestlers to FIP audience impress in the ring

In addition to Sami Callihan’s victory in the tournament, there were a number of wrestlers who made their debut in an FIP ring and made a good impression for a future return to Florida. Frightmare, Rich Swann, Lince Dorado, AR Fox, Chris Dickinson, and Scott Reed were able to show a new audience what they could do in the ring and gave the fans a taste of what they have done in other promotions like CZW, Evolve, DGUSA, and Chikara. I hope that their Florida careers will not be limited to the 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup.

A New #1 Contender for the FIP World Heavyweight Title

With his victory over FIP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley in the finals, did Sami Callihan leap frog the other wrestlers on the top ten rankings? Callihan’s impressive performances on Saturday may have been enough but we will see when FIP returns in 2011.

Quarterfinals Take 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup to the Next Level

There was a lot of promise with the four quarterfinals matches in this year’s Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup and all four matches delivered in a way that I did not expect. All four matches were among the best of the tournament this year and possibly in the history of the tournament. The matches provided different types of wrestling that would probably satisfy most wrestling fans. Sugar Dunkerton and Jon Moxley gave fans a match with some humor. Frightmare and Sami Callihan gave fans a high impact match where each man gave everything. Arik Cannon and Craig Classic gave fans a hard hitting match. Rich Swann and Jigsaw provided fans with an athletic showcase.

Callihan is finally able to finish off Frightmare with the Stretch Muffler and kicks to the head that forces Frightmare to tap out.

Match Number Three: Arik Cannon defeated Craig Classic in a Quarterfinal Match in the 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup

The match starts off with both men working on the arm but Cannon decides to start working on the leg and he puts Classic in a modified figure four leg lock. Cannon continues to work on the leg but Classic gets to the ropes. They exchange chops around the ring and Classic ups the intensity with a running forearm and Yakuza kick into the corner. Classic misses a diving head butt from the top turnbuckle and that allows Cannon to hit a flurry of moves to get a near fall. Cannon misses a moonsault and Classic responds with two German suplexes. Cannon catches Classic coming off the ropes with a slap and then after a knee he finishes off Craig with a brainbuster.

Match Number Four: Rich Swann defeated Jigsaw in a Quarterfinal Match in the 2010 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup

The crowd is clearly behind Jigsaw in this match and the fans want Jigsaw to kick Swann in the butt and he obliges. He follows that with a drop kick to the same area when Swann goes to the turnbuckles. Jigsaw forces Swann to the floor to regroup and he decides to have a snack during the match and takes some food from a fan sitting in the front row. Swann returns to the ring and starts to work on Jigsaw’s legs and puts him in the figure four leg lock and he uses the ropes for extra leverage and then he puts Jigsaw in a single leg crab. Callihan sees the taped shoulder and immediately starts to work on the arm. They go to the floor and Swann is sent into the guardrails. They return to the ring and Swann hits a super kick and then sets up for the standing 450 splash but he tells the crowd that he is not a one trick pony. Swann’s attitude backfires because Callihan gets Swann in the Koji Clutch and Swann taps.
